If Jim Bates became Head Coach

I think Bates 1st full year would be comparable to Nick's, record wise. There would be one total difference. Being that I dont think Bates would have been as proactive as Saban was this offseason, say we go 8-8; Bates would have hit the "glass ceiling" at that record as opposed to Saban whose 8-8 record would be merely the foundation on which he'll continue to build. Bates probably would have still drafted a back w/ the #2, But I think Caddie and Benson would have gotten a lot more serious consideration.

Under Bates the defense still would have been strong, and a little more varied, as a previous poster stated. Our conservative nature on D & O had a lot to do with Wanny's philosphy. Ricky would NOT be here, and bieng that I will be skeptical of Ricky until he proves his commitment beyond question to his teamates, I dont nessecarily se that as a bad thing. Do not get it twisted, those players' loved to play Bates as eveidenced by their inspired play amidst a failed season. I actually wouldn't have been against Bates coahing MY team, as a matter of fact; he was the I wanted if we couln't get Nick.
I prefer Nick to Bates for several reasons, the biggest one being Bates would have in no way established a coaching staff as strong as the one we now posess, which gives me certainty that our franchise will not only rebound from the worst season I've seen as a fan, but will have MY team playing in late January early February....

Dude your just dissing him cause hes not here. Bates is a very smart defensive coordinator....its not our scheme that lets up its out defense

Outside of Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, and Sam Madison we dont have any real stars but we have lots of people now that when formed together could be very dangerous

Kevin Carter
Matt Roth
Travis Daniels

I'll give you Kevin Carter, as he's a decent DL, but Roth and Daniels are far from dangerous at this point. I'd expect Daniels, if he starts, to get burned more than a few time this season. and as many have said, roth can be good, but he needs to do more than bullrush to succeed in the pros.

I definately did not want Bates as the head coach. I think the team needed to hire somebody from outside the organization and rebuild. The team won 3 games under Bates which is incredible, unless you realize that 2 of those victories were against Sf, and Cleveland.

Bates is known for being an imaginative defensive coordinator around the league. His job was to run Wansteadts/JJ's offense when he was here.

Plus the offensive line philosophy changed the second he became head coach.

This speculation is a moot point. Saban is in town now and I for one don't care to look back and speculate on what may have been if...... Were much better off, IMHO, now.

If I owed 8mil$ I'd consider coming back too. But Saban did have a hand in his return. Ricky said it himself.

Ricky has said a lot of things that aren't true. Ricky probably said that so it takes some heat off of him and makes people think he actually wants to play again. It's all about the $$$$$$$ for Ricky.

I usualy dont get angry on this board but can we give this guy a break please? He is no longer on our team. He stepped in for Dave Wannstedt, fired up the team and led us to beat the New England Patriots. Either thank the guy or forget about him. Jim Bates never did a anything but good for this team and we have to second guess what he would do if he was still our head coach. If we did not get Saban, I would be all about keeping Bates as head coach. How do you know he would have kept Spielmen? How do you know Trestmen would be our offensive coordinator? And of corse, we would have gotten a new offensive line coach, just not the best one available. Can we leave him alone? Please?

Nothing against Bates, but Nick Saban is a much better head coach...he is also a lot younger and has fresher ideas.

I'm glad the Dolphins didn't hire Jim bates. I think he would of sucked as a head coach. Also to be honest I don't even think he was that great as a defensive coach. He never adjusted the defense when the team played different offenses. If you watch New England every week they would run a different defense depending on the offense they faced. There has been to many people hired in the past for coaching positions because of who they knew instead of experience!

to quote Yoda

That is why you fail.

Hmmm, remember that it was Bates who publicly stated that our defense needed more work than the offense. Saban hasn't strayed away from that line of thinking.

I am glad we didnt hire Bates to be the HC.IMO this club needed major surgery and not just more teaking.I wish him well

Bates will be a good HC some day, He just isnt a guy who I would want to be rebuilding a team. I wish him luck in Green Bay.

This conversation is incipid, leave the guy alone for christ sake. He is not on our team anymore, he is not our coach, for the six or so games that he was he was not a bad coach. In fact, he did nothing but good for our team. Can we just thank the guy for doing a great job and leave him be?
