I know it wont be a popular statement, but if I could get a second and a mid or late round pick in this years draft I would trade Wake. He's 32 coming off batteling injury all last year, and is making $7.5m this year, and $9m each of the next two.
First of all the case for trading Wake, tho it would take a lot for me to be comfortable is this:
- Free up $4m in cap space.
- That's enough money to sign a replacement, for $4-7m you can get a similar player to Wake at DE.
- You take resources from a position of strength to strengthen the weaker units.
- His value will never be this high.
- You get a first rounder, so you're essentially trading Wake's salary, replacing him with a player at a similar salary and you add a first rounder in a deep draft.
MY HAIR BRAIN SCENARIO:
It's the day before the draft, we have struck out on LT's in FA and the Falcons have failed to upgrade at pass rusher. Clowney is selected with the first selection of the draft and is off the board. Needing a LT we trade into the 6 slot. Falcons are known to make splashes, are in win now mode and need a proven pass rusher with little value in the draft at 4-3 DE.
Atlanta receives
- Cameron Wake
- #19 overall pick
- MIA 4th rounder
Miami receives
- #6 overall pick to select Greg Robinson at LT.
- ATL 3rd rounder
- ATL 4th rounder
Obviously this would never happen but I love the idea of it. The $6-9m we'd save on a LT could be used to make another big splash in FA.
Bucs and Titans are fits too.
I get the logic, but why not just sign Albert with our crap ton amount cap we have available and then maybe packagae Wake and the 19th to move up and get Clowney. Clowney on one side and Jordan on the other......or we could keep Wake as a proven player and use the pick for a real need
First of all Albert's my last pick in FA, I think Robinson will have a much better career. I hate Albert, but if we have to sign him and it's a Jake Long type deal I'll put up with it because it'll give us more flexibility in the draft. More than Jake and I'll take my chances on draft day. Really hopeful a couple from the Monroe, Veldheer, Collins pool are out there because it's not looking great. In a draft like this I wanna stockpile picks, not give them up. It's too deep a class.
I agree, would rather trade back and not turn a strength to a weakness. We can get starting O-line in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
If they traded Jason Taylor they'd trade Cameron Wake.
Honestly, If they can get atleast a 2nd round for him? Considering everything else? They need to think long and hard on it... Nothing personal. Just Business!
