If the New England Patriots beat Arizona on Sunday, they will extend their winning streak to 17 games, or in terms South Florida can better understand, making them 17-0 in that span.

So you think the Patriots' 17-0 mark during the past two seasons would equal the 1972 Dolphins 17-0 record set during the perfect season?

I don't agree that if the pats go 17-0 over 2 seasons that it should equate to the dolphins '72 undefeated season. Any thoughts?

It shouldn't equal since the Dolphins did it with the same players and the Patriots might do it with different players.

No its not I think if they win 20 it sets the consecutive win streak over 2 years it would give them THAT record a perfect season is a perfect season now its 19-0 thats going to be hard to do.

Exactly.

its not the same but I wonder if Pats fans will say it is

its like when tiger woods won all four majors but in 2 yrs. its not a grand slam he did it in 2yrs not 1.

Silly question. There would be no question/doubt/thread if a team went 9-7 one season (start out 0-7 finish 9-0) and then 9-7 (start out 9-0, finish 0-7) now would there......
On the flip side, if in fact the stinkin patsies go undefeated this year, that would/possibly, in this watered down era, arguable = to or better than what the perfect team did.

Pats fan here.

A 17 game winning streak over two years has nothing on a perfect season.

But a record is a record is a record and if the Patriots are able to break the record of 18 consecutive wins, it would be a great accomplishment.

Having said all that........The Patriots 15 game winning streak of last season should get more recognition. They beat TEN teams that were 10-6 or better. No other team has ever done that. Miami, by the way, only beat one team with a winning record in 1972.

Conclusion:

The Patriots two year winning streak (of 16 or 17 or 18 or 19, etc...) doesn't even compare to the Dolphins perfect season. They're apples and oranges.

But the '03 Patriots winning streak of 15 games DOES compare to the 17 straight games won by the '72 Dolphins and considering all the circumstances surrounding both streaks (schedule, salary cap, parity or balance, league growth, etc...) one could even argue that the Patriots streak was MORE IMPRESSIVE.

Who knows? Maybe this argument will be irrelevant in a few months. It sure will be if the Patriots end up extending their winning streak to 34 games.

I agree with what everyone has said. No way is 17 over 2 seasons anything close to a perfect season!

I don't think anybody in there right mind will say a perfect season, and a consecutive string of wins over two seasons is the same thing. On top of that, even if the Patsis break the consecutive wins record, it wont be celebrated or brought up in the media on any occasion until someone then threatens that record. How often do we hear of the Bears and Dolphins 18 game winning streak? Rarely. But the 17-0 is brought up all the time. That is harder to do, no matter who you play, because the pressure to complete those final games is a hell of a lot tougher than the pressure to win games in Wk 1 - 5 in a season.

As for the argument that the 72 Phins didnt beat but one winning team in the season, well, what type of record do you think the teams in the Playoffs and SB had?

I have to say as much as I hate to. The Pats did an awesome thing last year fighting through the injurys and the slow start to win the games straight they did and win the Superbowl. BUT with that being said I don't think you can compare this years wins to last. They have different players on this team and it is a different team. If they done it over 1 season then ok but not 2.

17 wins in a row is amazing, but it's not the same as 17-0.

Perfect season wins out, even over 18 wins in a row or 20
