Whether you blame Parcells or Ireland or both, this regime (and frankly, the 3-4 before them)has not been able to draft enough solid starting players, let alone elite talent. Of the positions you say we need,
DE: already drafted Langford, Merling, Odrick
WR : Hartline, Turner
LB: AJ Edds, Koa Misi
CB: Vontae, Sean Smith
OG : John Jerry
And these are just the relatively high draft picks they've used, I'm not even counting the late round picks
TE, RB, and QB have all been drafted by them, but so far none of their picks are starters
This is my entire point - they've had ample opportunities to address all these positions and have not been able to identify talent with their picks at a level that can keep up with the league, let alone make any headway. Ochocinco (and Marshall before him) is a perfect example of what happens when you have to try to get your talent through free agency/trade. Great players aren't let go or traded. At some point you have to draft your own superstar talent.
Tannehill aside, what player drafted by this team even approaches elite? Whose jersey should my son be wearing from the last 5 years worth of drafts? The left tackle's?!
I truly understand your point's. I realize Miami has been rebuilding since Jimmy Johnson left town. He was the one guy that actually picked players that were Pro Bowl Types. Parcell's handcuffed this organization because his way was the only way. All those players named above have been average at best. I believe this new regime is exactly whats needed moving forward. It's a shame it seems that the roster is so void of Pro Bowl Talent. There is just too many unknowns right know on the roster. Too many If's!!! I'm willing to see if any of the players drafted or UDFA that were signed over the last 2 seasons start contributing at high levels. The biggest problem I saw with Sparano was his inability to teach young players. I believe Philbin's philosophy will eventually bear fruit by teaching and preparing these young kids to play. It's been so long since we had a very solid group since JT and Zach were drafted. Guy's like Clay, Pouncey, Martin, Tannehill, Miller, Samuda, Wilson and Jones all seem to have the ability to form a good core. But with a new Coach and new Staff, it may take 1-2 perhaps even 3 years to get were you and I hope this team can be. I've given up hope for players like Smith and Davis, which IMO puts the team in an even deeper rebuild mode. But I have to admit some hope lies with UDFA finds like Wallace, Pruitt, Samuda guys that need experience and seem to have a HUGE opportunity staring them in the face this season. I feel for the little DOLFANS out there wanting to have a players jersey. I believe there is a glimmer of hope with Philbin, but I could be wrong.
