Imagine if...

I guarantee by week 5 Smith is the QB. Rattay was given the job based on knowing the system and being more comfortable. Smith is obviously the more talented of the 2 and will have the job, its just a matter of a young guy paying his dues! If the Niners would have taken Brown I would have loved to have had Smith, although it wouldn't have helped us much this year.:(

You have to take into consideration Smith's background. It is not like he played in the SEC last year against jam up defenses. Lets make no mistake Smith is going to be a project. I think people knew this but had a tremendous amount of faith because he is so highly regarded as intelligent. I have to agree half way through the season Smith starts. Call me crazy, but I don't think Rattay is the worst qb. He is surely better than Gus or Feeley.

I hate to break to you all but smith is the draft bust.HE SUCKS

that's honestly sad that smith lost to rattay....
last year i can understand cause the giants had warner, tiki, shockey, philips held out, and the steelers had a solid team....but honestly, rattay? wtf...the 49ers have no one, there's no shot they're gonna win this year, why not let smith have the shot?
because there is no reason to damage thier future QB, they ARE not going anywhere this year, and there is no reason to hurt the goldenboy on a useless year.

Imagine having a career ending injury to the number 1 pick during a 3-13 year.

maybe we cudda.
Linehan had 3 rbs in Vikings and Daunte was runnin the show...Feeley aint Culpepper.
Broncos produce 1,000 yard backs every year with thier o-line with Hudson Huock we cudda gotten an average runningback IF indeed Huock is that good of a coach.

If Smith were available...I feel that we'd have taken him...and rather quickly. It makes no difference that Smith is currently behind Rattay. Rattay has played very well in the preseason games but in the one game of theirs I saw, Smith showed the skills that made him the #1 overall pick and that he IS their QB of the future....Don't forget, Carson Palmer sat his 1st year in Cinn and he certainly has the talent to be a top QB in the future (granted, I do think that Kitna is better than Rattay) but I have a feeling that with more understanding of the S.F. offense that it's highly possible that Smith ends up starting the 2nd half of the season for them (unless the 49ers are like 6-1 or something...which is much less likely than not)

BTW, I noticed that another poster mentioned that we'd have taken Caddy if Brown was gone at 1. While I'm a huge Caddy fan, will root for the guy except when he plays against us, and think he'll be a very very good pro, I think that the opportunity to get the best QB in the draft would have outweighed taking any other postition....IMO, Smith was by far the best player in the draft when position importance and money to be paid out in the 1st round are taken into consideration.

agreed....just to note...Linehan used 4 RBs thoughout the season (Bennett, Smith, Moore, and Moe Willaims)...in this draft they added Faison (but lost Smith because of pot for the seaon) so they'll again keep 4 active on the 53 man roster.

while I hate to admit it...I'd also take Rattay over Gus and Feeley!
