In your opinion...what motivated the Tua extension?

My stance isn’t on the player and more on the topic of the thread…

Why did we give him the extension a year earlier than we needed to? Did we get a discount because of it? No

Did he show us 4 years of good data to confirm this was a no brainer? No

Im a fan of the player… but the concussions and availability IS a factor.

The irony of @MARINO1384 talking nonsense about business acumen not understanding that the move made was the wrong business move. You dont extend someone a year early if you’re not getting some big win in the situation. What was the win? We got an early out?

If we made him play on his 5th year *and he crushed it* he would have signed the same size contract.

And if didn’t crush it? Like how it actually was? We could have resigned him for half the money and it would be a value deal and we would have money for OL, CB, etc.
You also could have tagged Tua with franchise tag like the Ravens did with Lamar as well after the option if an extension couldn't be worked out . He really held no leverage. The NFL has this HEAVILY rigged for organizations.

This was MARINO1384's take on the Tua deal. Unsurprisingly he's moved from "BEST DEAL EVA!!1!" to "What else could they have done?!"

Personally if I were him, in threads like this I'd just stay quiet like a dog with his tail between his legs after shi*ting on the rug.

Actually, I didn’t even think about franchise tag… so we could have had two more years of data before making the choice… great… lol

Show me a single player who has sat out the 5th year - I don’t need to narrow it down like you to QB. Show me a single player who sat.

I’ll refrain from addressing your personal attacks. I really don’t need to prove anything about business acumen to some random internet person. And I certainly won’t engage.

Show me a single qb that played that wasn’t offered a contract.

Wasn’t a personal attack just a painfully obvious statement. Anyone that doesn’t realize the nfl is a business first and foremost is lacks some pretty basic common sense in the area.

They did get a discount. He got the least amount of guaranteed and and fully guaranteed money of any new big qb signing. The deal had a very easy out after 2026 and they could have even got out of the deal this year had they done the release prior to his contract becoming fully guaranteed in mid march. Go on continue to show that you don’t know what you’re talking about though, it comical to see you try.

I’ve already listed multiple reasons why he had leverage and it’s not that simple as it’s not as simple as making him play. There’s a reason teams pay their qb’s and not a single one gets into the situation of playing on their 5th year, it’s good for nobody to suck with a potential holdout.

Alternately things I haven’t seen stated is cap flexibility. Miami lowered his contract with the extension from 24 to 9, Miami was literally not able to field a team without it. They were signing bargain bin players just to do so with the added flexibility.

Another flaw in “forcing” a player to play is by rule a player only needs to play 6 games to receive credit for a season. Could of just as easily sat out first 11 games of the season waiting for the dolphins season to be ruined before agreeing to play if we are playing the hypothetical game. Now what? You guaranteed another losing season for sure, you still don’t know what you have, what’s the next move? Franchise tag him so he can do it again? Let him walk and go into 2025 with nobody as it was an incredibly weak draft class. Just praying someone decent comes out in 2026? Stephen Ross is going to loveeeee you @Atila you just lost him hundreds of millions of dollars in sales and team value while you posted back to back 3 win season and still don’t have anything more than a hope and a prayer on a rookie qb in 2026.

If you weren’t completely ignorant you’d understand how Tua got the least guaranteed, the least fully guaranteed and also had an easy out prior to his contract becoming fully guaranteed as well as after 2026. It was overall a good contract in contrast to the others that were signed which tightly bounds other teams to their qb for longer deals. Might be tough for you to understand though since it’s not a fake stat you copied and pasted from twitter.

A guy who’s been caught posting fake stats to drive a narrative talking about poster history is pure comedy gold. Yeah I got excited about a chance at solid qb play after 20 years of Cleo lemon and crew but at the end of the day atleast I’ll always have more credibility then a guy who’s post fake stats to try to prove his point. That was only one post that I checked, who knows how many other countless times you’ve posted made up things. Sad world we live in where a guy who’s makes up fake things and post them wants to talk about posting history.

I think Tua is a top 5 qb in the league. I don’t think the system matters much at all. I know the concussions are a huge deal. He showed elite traits even under Flores. I know many of you will disagree but that is my stance.
I'm figuring that, when healthy, Tua is somewhere in the 8th-12th range among all QBs currently in the NFL.

Ah yes, Tua is definitely going to sit out 11 games, totally happens all the time.

Was that “least guaranteed money of any new QB signing” less than what he would have got after his 5th season results? No, not close.

The only good point you made is they got monetary flexibility by lowering his number… but we know that teams can get flexible with this stuff if need be (admittedly, that means doing things like extending Ramsey or Hill… ah ****… our brilliant GM already did that).

You hear yourself right? You’re trying to argue that the bad business move we made that we can see in hindsight is and was a good business move.

I’m not sitting here talking about Tua, if he’s good or bad, etc… I would have loved if he we got to resign him after last year to what Sam Darnold got and have a great value if he stays healthy… I’m literally just calling out Grier for giving a bad contract. Well, me and everyone else. And it’s hindsight 20-20 and you’re still fighting? Odd.

Well that’s cool, you and the other overly confident poster (why can’t we use the word coc-ky?) on the forum can agree on one thing. Looks like not many people with a clue would die on this hill with you.

Yeah that’s fair. I have pretty much 5-13 as Tua/Herbert/Love/Hurts/Purdy/Dak/Stafford/Goff/Mayfield in any order if ranking purely by skill and assuming all are healthy. Think you’re splitting hairs between all those guys. All can play at a high level but are dependent on their support staff. Honorable mention to Jayden Daniels who may very well take that 5th spot if he repeats this year what he did rookie year but one year doesn’t cut it for me when the above have been pretty consistently good last few years. Also Stroud could join that 5-13 pack but after a let down sophomore year I’m not sure who will show up 3rd year which is why I don’t feel comfortable ranking him currently.

Thought we were talking hypotheticals here? A qb playing on a 5th which is what you’re suggesting has also never happened without the team offering a contract…. So your unrealistic scenario is okay but mine isn’t? That makes sense….

Huh? No we are talking about reality.

Plenty of QBs don’t get an extension before 5th year… a lot of them get CUT because they don’t work out… the Trey Lance or Zach Wilson’s of the world.

And current top 4 QB Lamar Jackson literally played on his final year without an extension.

You have referenced over and over the “leverage” he had as your main defense of the contract - I don’t know why anyone wants to defend Chris Grier, but I digress - when in reality, not one single player AT ANY POSITION has chosen to sit out.

The only player I can think of who sat out under contract was that chubby RB for Ohio state who amounted to nothing - and that was at the collegiate level, right?. Does it even happen in the NFL? Can you name one single player at any position who took the “leverage” stance of sitting out their contract? I played your game, and answered. Now you go.

I’m earnestly curious at this point.

Those QBs were never offered a 5th year, much different. Lamar Jackson was offered pretty good contract but decided to bet on himself, much different again. Tua could have very well bet on himself and received a Dak Prescott contract had he stayed healthy again but instead took what was offered rather than risk it.

Never even defended Grier just simply stating that saying Tua had 0 leverage is entirely wrong and incorrect. If you want to argue he didn’t have good leverage then that’s fine and your opinion but he certainly had it.

Maurice Clarett sat out due to being ineligible for draft. Had a phenomenal freshmen year and challenged the draft rules but lost.

No I can’t just like you can’t name a single qb that has played on a 5th year option without being offered a contract. Comparing a non qb to a qb is irrelevant. Other positions aren’t nearly as important. When your the difference between a team winning 3 games and 10 that’s the leverage part, not sure what you continue to not understand.

I’m not gonna go round and round with you, but you’re still arguing IN HINDSIGHT that it was a good contract - so weird.

And there is zero precedent for what you suggest Tua do - sit out.

He. Had. No. Leverage.

That’s literally your only argument point and it doesn’t work.

Again never said it was a good contract, stated it was alright in comparison due to easy outs with not a ton guaranteed but my argument has always been in this thread that he had leverage.

There’s no precedent for your argument for a qb playing on a 5th year as well.

Already broke down his leverage multiple times. Just because you don’t have the mental capacity that there’s levels to leverage doesn’t make you right. Like I said if you want to say his leverage was great, that’s fine but to say he had none when he’s the difference between a team wining 3 games and 10 is insane.

You’re right no point in going around and around. Let’s just agree that I’m right and you just lack any type of common sense. Literally insane to think a guy as important as a qb doesn’t have any leverage 🤣.

How insecure are you that you can’t “agree to disagree” without throwing out multiple insults. Maybe it’s because everyone disagrees with you and you need to feel tough… because of said insecurities.

Welp, see ya later!
