Interest in Alex Smith was serious !

I truly think if the 49ers had went with taking Aaron Rodgers instead of Alex Smith, things would have been very different for everyone, and Ronnie Brown may very well not be a Dolphin right now...

I dont know why the Dolphins would have wanted anything to do with Smith when you spent a second rounder on AJ. Give AJ another year to show what he has before you start thinking of letting him go.
Oh BS, you just like that the bills get to face garbage AJ 2x a year knowing he stinks

I think it was Ronnie all the way anyway. Judging by what saban has done with the cap the last thing he wants is a 1 man cap clog which any qb in the top 5 always is.

One of the questions posed to Saban after the pick was relative to Braylon Edwards, the use of smokescreens, etc., and he responded first by saying something like 'we would have had to think very hard about the pick if a franchise quaterback was available'. He went on to give a bit of praise for Edwards, mention how he had heard there was noise about people willing to move up for him and thus the smokescreen. He basically said it was Brown over Braylon all the way, but he did not shut the door about Smith. I didn't interpret it that way at least. Maybe he's said something since.

It wouldn't have been bad but who knows how the direction of the Dolphins draft would have went. My bet would have been we'd take Fason in the 3rd or Morency in the 3rd if we took Smith in the 1st.

Of course we had interest in Smith. It was likely he would be hovering around at 2 but we did the right thing regardless of him being there or not.

What on earth is that exclamation point doing there, at the end of the title of this thread? Obviously we would have taken Smith if he had been available. The Ronnie Brown lovers don't want to believe that but who cares? You don't pass on a QB with the upside of an Alex Smith. I'm sure Saban and Co. were miffed/giddy for months at the 49ers' apparent interest in Aaron Rodgers. More likely, as Boomer insisted all along, it was always going to be Alex Smith to SF, and we were deciding on the first runnerup.

tbh, I'm glad the way the draft worked out.

Ronnie was the second player on my board, and ahead of Alex Smith.

However, I think that if Smith was there then he would have enticed the hell out of Saban... it would also have made a trade with Cleveland more likely.

I don't know if I would want that trade. :shakeno:

Even though Loseman could be a very good pro, he could just as easily not be, with Feeley we have already seen what we have, and with an O-line, and a better running game, he has a very good shot at being good......we know he is tough.

NO!!! What we KNOW is that when he is pressured he will ALWAYS make horrible decisions. If you wouldn't trade AJ for JP straight up, you need to have your head examined. :shakeno:

Saban certainly had no problem saying that he wanted Webster over Roth in the second so, why would he have a problem saying he wanted Smith over Brown in the first?

He didn't want Smith over Brown, that's why he didn't say it.

EXACTLY. What else do people need to see?? Next year after he falls on his face again people are gonna say "yeah the OL was better but the cheerleaders were too good looking and distracted him. Give him another year with ugly cheerleaders and he'll be fine" :shakeno: .
Face it, there were no better options out there without trading our future for a rookie QB who may or may not be the answer. We know AJ is not the answer, but he will back up Gus this year and be gone next year.

I am glad that all the speculation is over. Brown will be a star. It will take several years for Smith to possibly become a great QB.

I like the Brown pick. It's fill an immediate need. I think that alot of the hype around us taking Smith was to drum up interest in some other team trading up to get him.

I think Saban would've taken Smith. Saban already took his vet qb via Gus. I'm almost sure Saban will draft a qb next year. Aj may not be old but by today's standard if he were drafted , 28 would be too old for a rookie qb learning his way around the NFL. There have been qb's that matured late in their careers but rarely are they considered long term solutions. I doubt AJ can pull off a Kurt Warner.

The 9ers picking up Smith was surprising to me, I really thought they wanted Rodgers all along. I am one of those few people who thought Saban was going to pick either Smith or Ewards with the second pick(goes to show how much I know) Saying that, I do believe that if Smith was on the board, he would be a phin right now.
