Interesting marino sack rate stat

Dan Marino led the league in sack rate (lowest in league) 10 times including 7 straight seasons. Does the qb have anything to do with sacks??

The quickest release the game has ever seen & an almost sixth sense on how to maneuver in the pocket may have something to do with it. :)

watch this clip, I don't think the position was ever played any better

Of course I was 3 years old that year so I didn't know anything about the game. :(

Marino did the cha-cha slide all over the pocket. Making Hall of Fame DE's and DT's look like average Joe's.

Slide to left.......slide to the right....two hops now ya'll.....two hops now ya'll.

Didn't hurt that he could throw perfect 50 yard bombs with Defenders wrapped all over him.

Dan Marino was just something else dude. Once in a generation type guy. Its really that simple. You cant compare him to anyone.

1984 seemed like a dream, i had to pinch myself to make sure it wasnt. the best passing offense in the history of the nfl up to that point...and the afc title game against pitt, after a slow start, was just mind boggling domination from the offense. we may not have won the sb but that was a special, special season. tony nathan, the marks brothers, nat moore, bruce hardy.....just incredible talent.

That was a great team, it was just unfortunate for you guys you ran into an all time great team. No shame in losing to that Niner team which may have been the best of all their title teams.

He was also great for moving 'up' in the pocket.
Everything has been said quickly in this thread; pocket presence, footwork, quick release, knew when to throw it away.

very true nyjunc, it still haunts me we lost that game but that niner team was incredible. an ot loss at home to pitt from going undefeated.

Did you notice around the 3 minute mark of the video, that long bomb to Duper? Just right there for Duper to run under it. Perfect timing. I see that and I hope that someday we will see that from Tanny and Wallace.

I realize that's not a fair comparison, but I can dream.

WOW!! I was not born until 86.
Thanks for posting that, my memories of marino were some of his later years.
Those throws were amazing!! sliding left 50 yard on a line in stride! Drop in the bucket to Duper, fitting the ball in the back of the endzone, had to throw a rope to keep wr in bounds! That is amazing stuff there!

Off balance quick release under pressure and ropes in tight windows. I wish I saw more of him.

as a football fan and former QB in my youth I loved Dan, as a Jet fan I hated Dan. It kind of sucks that 2 of my favorite QBs to watch played on Jets rivals- Marino w/ Miami and Brady in NE. I despise them both for what they did(continue to do in Brady's case) to my team but I love watching the way they play/played the position.

Normally no, the line is the most important part of how high the sack rate will be, as long as the QB is able to get rid of the ball in a reasonable time (Tannehill did), but if your a freak QB like Marino, where the ball came out of his hand almost the instant he saw the receiver open, then the QB can help the players blocking for him look like superstars.

Good news Part II: A QB playing at this time that also has an above average release, just happens to be playing for the Dolphins right now in Tannehill....JUST GET HIM AN O-LINE THAT CAN ACTUALLY PASS-PROTECT.

a QB can make a mediocre OL look like a good one and a bad one look mediocre- see Russell Wilson and Seattle.
