Interesting Quotes from Joe Philbin's Introductory Press Conference

Did you ever think that maybe those coaches you mentioned learned something in their previous experiences that helped them in their next job? Maybe after being fired, they adjusted their approach in certain ways? Or maybe it just means someone like Dungy was a good coach, and was able to get paired with a great QB and win a title? None of this proves that Philbin is a great coach now, or that he will ever turn into one.

The coaches needed to get that first job to learn how to coach. Rarely to first time coaches succeed long term with their first head coaching job.

I'm not sure there's any definitive evidence he isn't. I mean of course we can all perceive this sort of thing in our own way, but in the end this is going to be about like a Rorschach.

How do we know the team laid down?

Because 2 weeks earlier the beat the Patriots

The Ravens "laid down" in week 17 too, guess that means Harbaugh must be a bust...

The Ravens scored 17 points in week 17, we scored 7. They played the Bengals, and we played a non-playoff team, the Jets. AND Flacco did it wearing a knee brace. How is that even remotely the same? I won't even attempt to also explain that the Ravens roster was dismantled after winning the superbowl, while ours has been built up.

The problem I have with keeping people in place is this....I'd like to give eveyone the benefitof the doubt but then I remember Wanny and Fiedler. I gave them time and time and felt they'd get it together but Wanny ran the team to the ground and Fiedler was never good to begin with either. We can make ourselfs believe that Ireland will draft better and that Philbin will coach better but we're just wasting time. Both Ireland and Philbin need to go now but the sad thing is I don't think Ross will pull the triger so we're stuck again.

Ozzy rules!!

(On running the West Coast offense here similar to the offense ran in Green Bay) "Well, as I was saying earlier in the day, I've been in the West Coast system for nine years and I'm still not exactly sure what that means.

Here you go hope this helps, btw Joe, Google is your friend..

West Coast offense
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In American football, the "West Coast offense" is a common term for an offense that places a greater emphasis on passing than on running.

There are two similar but distinct offensive strategic systems which are commonly referred to as "West Coast offenses". Originally the term referred to the Air Coryell system popularized by Don Coryell, but, following a journalistic error, it now more commonly refers to the offensive system popularized by Bill Walsh, characterized by short, horizontal passing routes in lieu of running plays to "stretch out" defenses, opening up the potential for long runs or long passes.

Well they still "laid down". If "laying down" is definitive proof that the head coach is bad then logically Harbaugh must be bad. Tore down roster vs built up roster doesn't mean a whole lot considering how terrible we were last year, they could be torn down and still be much better than us--logic. Tannehill's leg was hurt as well so that's no excuse. Andy Dalton played worse than Geno Smith with a passer rating of 62, he threw 4 INTs, FOUR ****ING INTs and you're going to claim the Ravens played all world for John Harbaugh?

Here is what you guys are trying to pass of as "logic": If a team "lays down" week 17 with playoffs on the line then the coach of that team is bad.

John Harbaugh won a SuperBowl which means he is a good coach so obviously your logic is bad... unless you have another explanation?

I just started watching football at around that time and even I could see Wanny was a ****ing moron with the clock management.

You guys wouldn't know a good coach if you saw one. Complete and utter buffoons.

Bellichick got fired lol, john fox fired lol, Coughlin fired, Pete Carroll fired twice in this league, tony dungy canned, Gruden canned,

4 of those 6 went on to win Super Bowls. The other 2 are the #1 seed in their respective divisions.

Great moves by those prior organizations. I'm sure their fan base was tickled to death to move on to the next best thing.

I think you are right we should have kept Cam. I feel so dumb.

I pretty much agree with all of this. I guess I am giving Ireland less benefit of the doubt based on the results of this year's draft. I get that you can't truly judge yet, but we needed some immediate help and didn't get any.

Why are we revisiting a press conference from 2 years ago?

Clearly Jonathan Martin was a huge huge mistake. Really f'd everyone. jonathan martin should rot in hell! would you like a cookie?

I've been waffling on keeping Philbin for some time.
I think he can be a great coach, but he needs to learn that you cant do the walk-softly/carry a big stick mentality when you're only 2 years as a HC and your team is still getting pieced together (albeit, quite half-assed from Ireland).
You need to fire up your guys, be stronger and more assertive at the reins in the first few years. I get the feeling like he's giving far too much control to Sherman and Coyle, and they're not handling adjustments from game-to-game as well as they could be.
