Interesting...

i guess i deserve that for thinking he was much younger...for the actual on field player though no i do not...but i get it

you guys got me...

I definitely understand and appreciate the premise. Great player. But this team isn't ready to compete next season. If anything we should be looking to move guys like Wake for draft picks. I love Wake, but he has maybe 2 left of 10+ sack production.

Yeah.....

Sure I'd bring him for a 5th or 6th rounder and bump his contract up a little bit.

No point in bringing in a pissed off elite guard without bumping up his contract.

Guy would be a beast, easily get 2-3 years from him and open up first round draft pick to BPA.

an awful lot of short term fix signings for a team not ready to compete...as for wake you can't move on from him til jordan proves he can take the mantle at least...otherwise you think this d's got some issues now...ha ha...

I never get the whole, trade elite players nearing end of careers tactic.

Sure Wake has a good 2-3 years left in him, but thats a average NFL career.

I could understand if we are in full rebuild mode and wont compete for anything for another 2-3 years, but this team has the tools and weapons to compete NOW. Sure, fix up the O-line and solidify a couple other positions, but if not for the end of year melt down we would of been in the playoffs.

That's very true. I jumped the gun because so many dots were connected to us on this one.

A. We need another Guard
B. The best years of his career were under Bill Lazor.
C. He can block for a QB in Ryan Tannehill that's style is identical to Nick Foles.
D. The guy is a ANIMAL
E. How often can you trade a 5th to 7th round pick for a pro bowler?

Best years under Bill Lazor? Lazor was the QB coach for one year in Philly.

Progress blocker for whom? Thomas? Brenner? Lol.

We need immediate and quality veteran help in terms of protection. We need to make the playoffs. Mathis is still quite good. I'd give them a 6th, and call it day. Get it done Hickey.

I'd part with a 6th for him ... although buyer beware, he wants more than his current 5+ million per year. As I have understood it however, they're asking for a 2nd. IF that's true, I contend he'd be blocking this teams' progress - because although we haven't had much success in recent years with our 2nd rounders, we do have a new GM and may be able to stop that streak.

I would prefer to have the young 2nd round draftee over a 1 or 2 year rental.

If he'll play at 5.5 mil per season, I'd trade for him. If he wants more money, I'd let Philly decide to cut him or not and then go after him. No reason to not contact his agent if Philly is opening him up for trade. If he'll stay at his current contract I 'd give a 5th for him. Plug him in at right guard and all we need is a right tackle. Boom, done.

One question: is it still the case that due to Florida tax laws the player has an advantage (net income) in Florida as compared to other states?

That's partially true, depending how they structure payouts: bonuses and other incentive payments and all game checks for games played in the State of Florida would fall under 0 state income tax for those sums (IF they have established their residency in the State of Florida), AND (MORE IMPORTANTLY) if they are structured as a W-2 employee of the team. For any games played out of the State of Florida, games checks received for those games are subject to the income tax laws and rates of the State in which the game was played. For states like FLA and TEXAS with no state income tax, that's a very nice incentive. What I don't know is what is the common convention...for a player to be an "employee" of the team, or for the player to be considered a subcontractor, receiving a 1099. One can make good arguments for being structured either way.

Even though a player has a "contract", I believe that it is more appropriately considered a compensation agreement for the player as an "employee", especially since the teams would usually pick up all ancillary costs for the player's travel, health insurance, medical and physical therapy treatments, etc.

They may be asking for a 2nd...but I don't see too many teams giving up a 2nd for him (considering his age, and contract's demand). I will be happy if we offered a 4th. Even though he's up there in age... He's worth a 4th Rd!

Looking at the numbers.

Eagles can't afford a new contract for him.

Eagles already at $130,808,521 for Top 51 and $138,290,620 Total.

Also have $3,078,343 in Dead Money

Either Eagles need to cut some weight to give Mathis a new deal, or Mathis will be cut/traded or just play for the Eagles plenty pissed.

Possbily cut:

DeMeco Ryans at $6.9 savings this year.

Brent Celek at $4

I could see both getting cut for $10 on the cap. $2-3 for Rookie picks and rest for Mathis?

:idk:

I would absolutely give a third for the best guard in football....but because of the quality and depth of the draft and taking into account the eagles salary ramifications I would give a fifth.

I stand corrected.

Eagles cap roll over puts them at $150.

Plenty of cap space to re-do his deal. I'm assuming Eagles just don't want to fork over large coin for a 33 year old guard even if he is elite.
