Is Eugene Monroe worth investing in?

As far as I'm concerned, the LT is the second most important position on the team because he protects the blind side of the most important position on the team. If there are going to be two or three players on a team that I overpay for, I'm fine if one of them is a quality LT.

Monroe may be too expensive. I wonder if anyone on the team (GM/HC/OC) has looked at the cost of putting together an o-line that is not based on zone-blocking? Miami needs upgrades at numerous positions, so it would be prudent not to spend too much just on the o-line. If you could pick up 3 cornfed power-blocking linemen that can start for the price of one Monroe, why not go that route? However, I'm sure that Philbin would never do this... his offense is set in stone and he won't even change it up during games!

Why would any coach go with anything other than the offensive system he believes will make his team successful just to save a bit of money on some position players?

not to mention the O line coach we just hired who spent the last decade running a successful zone scheme in Housten

It is going to be a ridiculous number. If the Raiders really did offer Veldher 5 years/$55 M, I am not sure we can afford to sign Monroe. I saw it last night on Twitter. 5 years with a 6th year option/ $55 M with $24M guaranteed and he is waiting until after the weekend to decide. If any of this is true, that is a lot more than I thought he would get!

The Raiders are that kid in school who would remind the teacher that you had homework due. Bastards screw things up for everybody.

There's talk now that because of the new TV Deal for Thursday night games, the salary cap is going to explode to about 160 million dollars in two years.

Free agent contracts are about to take a jump.

Sorry, Mr. ireland, you no longer get to make decisions for this team.

No more cornfed prototype players who look good on paper. We need guys with a track record of producing.

This is like asking, would you rather have the dollar store safe to protect a million dollars cash.

Or would you rather have the fire proof/bullet proof safe?

Whatever it takes to prevent Tannehill from getting killed.

"Is Eugene Monroe worth investing in?"

That depends on how much he is asking. Yes, IMHO, he is the best OL player out there, he's young, and he fits a real need we have at LT. He is good in both run blocking and pass protection--both of which are used extensively in Bill Lazor's system. He is the youngest and has the least holes in his game. Is he Jonathan Ogden? No. Is he deserving of the most money of all the OL in free agency this year? Yes. Is he a pro bowl worthy player? Yes.

I think people need to understand that there is no guarantee that we get any LT in free agency. Sure, we can debate Monroe (my personal favorite) vs. Albert vs. Veldheer vs. Collins ... but most of those guys will probably re-sign with their existing teams. In the draft it is looking like we will miss out on Robinson, Matthews and Lewan ... and quite possibly even the stud LG Martin. I'm not convinced those Tennessee OT's are good enough. That would leave us without any competent LT whatsoever ... and that's not acceptable.

I love these Dolphins fans who want to quibble over a couple million per year for a young, top tier LT who has proven his consistency and durability...who even after watching their talented young QB get slammed to the ground a record 58 times still think they are being wise trying to go cheap.

LT is not a position you can afford to go cheap with, you either draft one highly and develop him or spend big money in free agency signing one, if your lucky enough that another team was stupid enough to let one go.

Its different if the player is injury prone like Jake Long is, Monroe has proven durable and consistent grading out very highly 3 straight seasons.

He is exactly what we need and we should overpay and go get him, if we fail at least we forced a conference rival(one who has two superbowls notched the last decaded or so), to at least spend a lot to keep him.

Ideally we get him, worse case Baltimore has less cap space to improve elsewhere.

I don't buy the sour grapes angle some here like. Of all the jobs of a LT, running down back side LBs is among the lowest. So he's weak at that? Fine. Can he keep T-Hill from getting sacked? Yes? Can he blow the DE off the line on a run to his side? Yes? Okay then.

58 sacks last year. Remember?

The game is won and lost in the trenches. Pay the man.

It's not so much is he worth it, I think his talent level merits what he's gonna get on the open market as long as it doesn't exceed 11 million annually. My thought is, is any non-QB worth that? Not to me, but I said that about the Wallace signing last year... Monroe would be a better contract than Wallace.
