Or was our secondary play last year one of the few strengths of the team...Why are we tinkering with it? O-Line and linebacker play were our 2 biggest issues.
 
Were we watching the same games? Miami's secondary, besides Grimes and to a lesser extent Patterson, was atrocious. Tackling sucked, coverage sucked and basically none of them really could intercept a ball if it meant life or death.
 
Because we had only 3 reasonable CBs on the roster before signing Finnegan and we didn't want to bring Clemons back, so FS was a need.

Yea bro we definitely were watching different games.Grimes had a great year,Patterson was having a great year until the injuries,Carroll had a good year.His metrics back that up.Jimmy Wilson was good in the slot.Clemons was solid.The only person who played bad in the secondary last year was Jones.
 
It was decent. Clemens never improved and we felt we could upgrade at a cheaper price

Grimes was great. Patterson died. Everyone else was meh at best.
 
There were inconsistencies in the secondary, both at corner and safety, that left weaknesses. You work to improve it. And even if your secondary is terrific, if you get a chance to improve it you try to. Delmas brings something that Clemons and Wilson don't, a tackler/hitter. Finnegan brings something the rookies don't, quality experience. I can tell you right now Delmas won't be giving any Pats WR a high five as they run into the end zone (Wilson).
 
I agree, we need a replacement for Wheeler more than we needed a replacement for Patterson / Nolan. What is odd is Patterson was extremely good when on the field but obviously was injured most of the time. Finnegan was injured last year as well. It seems weird we would choose him over Patterson, unless we know that Patterson's injury really bad.

Maybe compared to the atrocious run defense, but our secondary was lacking quite a bit.
 
The secondary was better with the addition of Grimes, but the rest of the Ireland crew are nothing special.
I appreciate hickey making improvement and changes. the unit's skill set was known by our division rivals. The unit needed some new players.
 
Clemons and Carroll stepped up last year, and coincidentally it was their contract years. Even then though, it's not like they had pro bowl years.

Miami is playing it smart by bringing in more guys just in case. Caroll's already gone.
