I dont know but year in year out this guy cant make the kicks when the game is on the line. Do you think were are paying him too much or what. I gotta feeling that he's gonna cost us the game tomorrow.

Yes, we're paying him waaaay too much. I think he's still one of the 3 highest paid kickers and he hasn't had a good season in 3 years. I don't know that he's over rated anymore because I don't think people consider him one of the best anymore. The one place he still excels is on kickoffs.

the same thread crops up week after week... why is there such a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately attitude toward this guy?

"year after year he can't make kicks when the game is on the line"... ??? do you even WATCH the dolphins the past 8 years?

all anyone ever remembers is his miss at New England in 2002... be realistic... would you like to release him and fumble around with loser after loser like the cowboys?...

let me catalogue how valuable Olindo Mare has been for the Miami Dolphins since he came here...and perhaps you can cut one of the most popular players in the lockerroom a touch of slack...

- Won the Cleveland game last year, connecting on a 51-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining to give the Dolphins a 10-7 win on national TV, the tenth fourth-quarter game-winning kick of his career ...

- In his career, Mare has kicked four or more field goals in a game nine times, and the Dolphins are 7-2 in those games ...

- He has accounted for three or more field goals in a game 28 times during the regular season and 29 occasions overall, including playoffs, and the Dolphins are 23-5 in such games in the regular season and 24-5 including playoffs ...

- career percentage of .819 is sixth in the NFL all-time... and best for Miami, all-time

- Over the last three seasons, Mare has converted eight field goals of 50 yards or longer after accumulating four over his first five seasons ...

- Since the advent of the K-Ball in 1999, Mare has accumulated 86 touchbacks, the most in the NFL over this six-year stretch ... Overall in his nine NFL seasons, he has accounted for 119 touchbacks, a figure which also is the most in the NFL over the past eight seasons (1997-2004).

- in his nine seasons, has missed just 5 XPs, and two of those were blocked...

- Mare accumulated 24 touchbacks in 2003, the most in the NFL ... This is the highest total by an NFL kicker since the advent of the K-Ball in 1999 ... He now owns two of the five highest single-season touchback figures in the league over the six-year stretch ...

- is and has always been EXTREMELY aggressive on kick coverage... is a fine athlete who has smashed a half dozen kick returners who would have went for six over the years....

- Was very hurt last year... and despite missing five games, tied for third in the AFC and seventh in the NFL with 11 touchbacks on kickoffs

give it a rest... he's a proven commodity and well worth the price when healthy.... i can't believe threads like this....

if there's any more doubt about the value of Olindo, give an honest read:

I love Mare...Especially for his Kicking Power....But it may be time next offseason to start looking for a replacement....But I hope he has a healthy season and puts any doubt to rest and plays a few more seasons.

ok, I'll give you some evidence, his stats, and not the feel good bio from the dolphins site. he has been average at best at field goals over the last 3 years. and i would consider 3 years a viable sample, and not "what have you done for me lately." after being in the 80's and 90's from 1998-2001, he has been about a 75% FG kicker. He is admittedly one of if not the best on kickoffs, which is very valuable, but he is earning a salary based on a contract he signed when he was hitting fg's at an 85-90% clip. he is no longer that player. or at least he hasn't been for 3 straight years. i don't think there is anyway to consider him a top 5 or even top 10 kicker at this point.

or one could look at the contract as a reward for his past greatness when he was making the league minimum... even if he has a few down years, MOSTLY due to injury, why can't he get a new reduced contract to stay in Miami? some people here are suggesting he be flat replaced... he deserves a bit more respect, much like the people wanted to heap on Bowens...

regardless... please... tell me WHO in NFL history has maintained a 85-90% clip over the course of his career? ... apparently, by your logic, a player MUST maintain all-time elite statistical excellence or face getting cut... good luck with that... that kind of loyalty would really lure free agents to Miami...

in today's expanded salary cap, i really don't think his contract is breaking the bank at all...

let's give him a bit of a chance to redeem himself now that his thigh is no longer throbbing and the offense may be improved... he deserves it...

I like Mare a lot. But he hasn't been the most consitent player lately. I have high hopes that he puts together a great season this year. I will always remember his 54 yarder to beat the Broncos in Mile High stadium a couple of years back. I was watching the game with a die hard Broncos fan and even he agreed it was the best game of pure football we had seen in years.

Your analysis of Mare is wrong...year in and year out he's made many of the big kicks...he also leads the league in touchbacks...a rare combination for kickers...However, I will concede that he must have his best season this season and that he has had mediocre seasons the last two (at least partly due to injury last year that affected him for 4 geames or so...) It's ashamed that he is one of the top kickers for his career, but he has to do it this year to remain on this team due to his salary...But that's what the NFL is all about...

Well, we actually don't diagree entirely. I like Olindo, I think he is a good player, but he should not be one of the top 5 highest paid kickers in the league. I would be happy with him staying in miami under a reduced contract because I do recognize that he has accomplished a lot here.

However, I am opposed to paying/ rewarding someone for past success if I don't believe that type of production will continue. If you manage a cap like that, you're team will go down hill fast. Look at the Eagles as the model, don't overpay based on past performanace, move on and groom the next guy. Its why that team has so much success, along with great talent evaluation and developing players.

I think Olindo declined restructuring when asked. I don't expect him to kick 85% for a career, but I also don't want to pay him like he is. That is my only point. So, yes, if you are paid as an elite palyer, you better produce like it or you WILL get cut. That is the nature of the NFL. It's not MLB or NBA where a guy like Mo Vaughn can keep earning 15 million a year without even playing.
