is philbin the smartest head coach miamis had since jj?

This question is a few years too early. I think (hope) that he will be better than Don Shula. Lets just say he comes across very well and educated so far and he gives us hope at least.

Tell that to Dan Marino
when JJ took Dan's ability to audible and change plays

Nothing like tying Marino's hands behind his back and saying,"Lets go Dan"
JJ didn't want to go to "the candy store". Someone should have told him not to close it down.

Nobody was smarter than Nick he just was given to much control for a first NFL head coach..

Saban was/is more conniving than smart...not being a smart ass by posting the definition, just wanted to make sure I was using the right word..

Definition of conniving : Someone conniving is calculating, scheming, and shrewd.

How can we tell, he hasn't even coached a game. I will say I like his philosophy more than Sparano's

Clearly much smarter than Sparano who must be one of the least intelligent coaches there has been in the league. If you don't learn from your mistakes then there is no hope for you.

really? i could have told you day 1 sparano was an idiot.
I don't think Sparano is an idiot.

He is a good assistant coach who busted as head coach. There were many things leading to his failure in Miami.

First he's old school and fan base wanted flashy passing attack without understanding this team was lacking of a decent QB.
Sparano was open to solutions and used the wildcat as answer, to the point Parcells and Ireland elaborated the Pat White's experiment with pathetic results. That wasn't Sparano's fault.
Also an important fact was the low punch and betrayal by former friend Jeff Ireland. He intended to replace him with Jim Harbaugh, before he opted for San Francisco.
Then without Chad Pennington to serve as core, it was a mess the way Chad Henne was handled by Dan Henning, who never entrusted him and stop any potential development.

Of course that there's no excuse for his long ride to build a solid o-line, his multiple changes of philosophy and the inefficient efforts to get a franchise passer.

But he's not an idiot, just a bad head coach.

Just wondering.. i havent liked a dolphins HC this much since jj.

This is a process and "You can't win 'em all." There will be blowout losses, heartbreaking losses, etc..
As of now, he is undefeated (0-0)...If you like him that much, you have to like him in bad and hard times as well.

FYI - A heartbreaking loss is always tougher to swallow than a blowout because up until the game actually ends, your team still has the chance to win...

If you agree to support Philbin in good and bad times... Welcome aboard!!!

Saban was smart enough to leave the franchise, so you have to give it to him.

Saban is a great college coach, but he just wasn't able to grasp the pro game. He ran back with his tail between his leg to something he knew he could do then staying in the pros and trying to accomplish the next big challenge. It is like back when I played video games as a kid. When I accomplished the "easy" level, I went on to the "hard" level. Saban keeps playing the same difficulty level and only played the more difficult level once before going back to doing what he knows he can do.

Would love to see him coach his first game before we start comparing him to a hall of fame two time SB coach........

kinda hard to say hes this ol great coach with all the talent alabama brings in. How many 1st rounders did they have in the draft this year? that team is loaded. So was his lsu teams.

I disagree that Sparano was an idiot.....I think he was a good HC who couldnt find a QB to run the team, Sparano had a back up QB running his offense for 3 yrs, the one yr he had a starter he went 11-5 and won the division. If Sparano would have pushed for Ryan he may still have a job right now......

I like what Philbin has done so far, I like the QB on the staff this yr, they are better than anything Sparano had to work with. What I want to see is how this team looks on the field how mentally tough this team is, can a Philbin team beat the Pats, Jets and Bills.......Can a Philbin team get off to a fast start, something Sparano could never do......

I am rooting for Philbin to be great, but lets see the guy coach before we start calling him a smart HC.....Let's see the in game decisions he makes, lets see how he reacts with less than 2 min in the game and behind by 3
