is philbin the smartest head coach miamis had since jj?

Saban had the intelligence and the coaching ability to be a great pro head coach, he just had a few issues.

1.He didn't deal well with criticism. In college he is one of the greats, and will go down as a top 5 coach of all time IMO (maybe even top 3 when all is said and done) so he never really got questioned. THe media was always questioning Saban and he shut them out which got criticism.

2. He had a bit of trouble relating to vets.

3.He listened to the wrong people. Saban's first year looked like he wanted to rebuild the "right way" (sign mid level vets and build through the draft). After we caught fire and finished the season above .500, he was convinced we only needed a QB. He listened to the wrong people and went Culpepper over Brees.

4. His drafting was a bit suspect. This is kind of hindsight, but he went mostly with guys he either coached, coached against, or recruited and drafted the best athletes rather than the best players.

Cam and Tony are a bit different. There were warning signs early on that Cam was in over his head. As I've said millions of times before, Tony's greatest strength is motivation (which he does well), but when the team gives up on you there is no way to motivate them to a high level again.

Listening to Philbin and reading reports I like what I hear, but we gotta let things play out.

Its funny listening to you guys talk about how you could have told someone that Sparano and Cameron were idiots day 1, yet you all were predicting playoffs and built them up when you got them. I remember you guys saying how Sparano is a real HC. And talking up Cameron as a offensive wiz when he got there. But now Philbin is the smartest HC you have had, yet you haven't seen him coach a single game yet.

Kinda like how Jets fans were calling Sparano a moron, and now that he's with the Jets he's an offensive genius.

His drafting was more than " a bit suspect." The 2006 draft was one of the worst Dolphins drafts of all time. And the 2005 one was not much better, despite having a ridiculously high pick. Saban's personnel decisions were the worst aspect of his tenure here, and that's what sunk him.

I disagree that Sparano was an idiot.....I think he was a good HC who couldnt find a QB to run the team, Sparano had a back up QB running his offense for 3 yrs, the one yr he had a starter he went 11-5 and won the division. If Sparano would have pushed for Ryan he may still have a job right now......

I like what Philbin has done so far, I like the QB on the staff this yr, they are better than anything Sparano had to work with. What I want to see is how this team looks on the field how mentally tough this team is, can a Philbin team beat the Pats, Jets and Bills.......Can a Philbin team get off to a fast start, something Sparano could never do......

I am rooting for Philbin to be great, but lets see the guy coach before we start calling him a smart HC.....Let's see the in game decisions he makes, lets see how he reacts with less than 2 min in the game and behind by 3

hey buddy, sparano could had convinced ireland to trade for a qb but he didnt, he stuck to henne and that was his choice, he could have even benched henne but he didnt and it cost us our season for it, i am more than sure if matt moore was our starter we had a great shot at atleast making 10-6. Matt moore can ball, hes clumsy as hell but a better option than henne by a long shot.

I think Nick Saban was pretty intelligent. A complete penishole, but intelligent nonetheless. Probably more intelligent than Philbin, imo.

This is a fabulous word used in perfect context. I am going to cherish this word from now on and use it to describe the dumbest of *******s from now until I die.

And Jets fans are different how exactly? Mangenius, Bravado its the same bull**** in NY over and over again. Call me up when you finally win the big one again until then keep predicting playoff wins and success like every other NFL team not named the Pats, Colts, Pitt or Giants in the last decade.

That is what a fan does. I am sure you think that kicking fieldgoals with your new bright OC is the formula for success. Then you will see what us from the other side know ... Sparano is NOT a bright coach and he will have a mess of an OL, and Sanchez is NOT an NFL QB an neither is Tebow, but I am sure you are dreaming about a superbowl won by New York, and guess what ... your dream came true laste year ... If only it weren't the GIANTS !!!!!!

Philbin better be smart if he's going to remain an NFL Coach. Here's the stat PFT put up ....

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/06/25/ryan-thinks-he-and-schwartz-will-keep-on-survivin/

"Three years after more than a third of the NFL hired new head coaches, only two of those men remain on the job." ... "Jets coach Rex Ryan and Lions coach Jim Schwartz"

So more than 1/3 of 32 teams is at least 11 & only 2 survived 3 years, less than 20% survival rate!! They all appear to start off 'All so smart' ... but as we know don't even end up 'Not so much' ... but more like 'Dumber than a rock.'

Statistically, we're due!! ... we've had our share of guys who flopped!! Go Joe!! :snoopy:

At least it happened after he went 10-6 with a roster that wasn't that talented. How can you say a coach is the smartest one you have had when you haven't seen him coach a game yet? And I am calling the people that said they knew from day 1 that Sparano and Cam were bad coaches liars. There is nothing wrong with being optimistic, but to say hes already something before hes already coached a game is premature.

I don't think any Jets fan has called him a offensive genius... More that we are glad that Schottenheimer is gone and that hes bringing discipline to our offense that lacked it. I think we know that our offense won't be a high flying top ranked offense.. Sparano may not be a good HC, but that doesn't mean hes not a good assistant coach. A lot of great coaches love him.

05 looked good early, but the problem was none of those guys really improved. 2006? I remember liking the Derek Hagan pick mainly cause at that age (I believe I was a sophomore in high school) I knew who he was and saw him as a playmaker for a good but not great Arizona State team, and I liked Rod Wright just because 7th was great value. Otherwise, not thrilled. I never had a strong opinion on Allen, as I remember wanting either Donte Whitner (whose been a solid if unspectacular pro) or Manny Lawson (as Saban talked about shifting to the 3-4 as a base)

I'm not, I'm just calling Rex Ryan a dumbest SOB's I have ever listen to.

Is philbin the smartest head coach miamis had since jj?

Simple. Time shall tell. I do not know the answer of course, but I feel he will impress right from the get go. Mark my words: If our squad will be above .500 prior to the bye, believe it or not, that will be a big deal. A sure confident builder coming out the bye week and into the remaining games in the season. We, I think, will shoot UPWARD like a canon ball with an assurance that yes, we CAN reach a playoff (true) hope for our attitude will be sky high.
