Regarding Sapp, very much indeed. I charted only the first half so far, but he was responsible for 4 completions where he either got caught out of position or simply didn't match up well against the Pats speed. The first one is on him, the second I would blame Nolan more... why put yourself at disavantage through scheme?
Regarding Jones... it's nice he can tackle, but if he's constantly out of position it's not necessarily the coaches' fault. We'd have to know the defensive scheme that was called before assigning blame. Overall I don't think it's wrong players call each other out, what kills me is that they go to the press for it - as little as they have, even.
Completely agree with you on Nolan. Scheme is only the vehicle to get the job done, you still need a driver. Right now, Mike Nolan isn't in control of his vehicle.
The 99 yard touchdown to Welker is a play that I've already broken down from an assignment standpoint. Reshad had man coverage on the tight end.... problem was, Nolan blitzed and didn't disguise it well at all. Brady kept the TE in to block, which coverted Jones' responsibility to help deep in a Cover-1.
He took a bad angle and tried to undercut the football... bad decision. But he was also inches away from knocking that ball away and saving Sapp's a** too... it just didn't happen. The throw by Brady was so good that there was no defense for it.... I don't care who was back there.
The coaches shouldn't have Reshad Jones in that position to begin with... he's not a free safety, which was my point. He needs to be shaded towards the strong side of offensive formations.
If you want to leave Jones with deep middle responsibility in a "sky" or inverted look, that's a different story. But he has no business being back there as the last line of defense in a Cover-1 look with a blitz on and man coverage by the corners across the board.... and especially not against a quarterback the caliber of Tom Brady.
