I just read that the Fins as had only 1 1,000 yard rusher in the past 15 years and that was Lamar Smith a few years ago. Is that really true?

No.....we've had 2!!!!!!! Who could forget Karim Abdul-Jabbar's sweeping hookshots across the lane....ooops my bad.

KAJ had 1100 yds and 15 TDs one year....

and it was actually something like 19 years since Del Williams was the only 1000 yard rusher from 1978 'til Kareem in 1996

the most pathetic stat Fin stat - Team record for 1000 yards in a season ( only 7 times):
1,258 Delvin Williams (1978), 4.6 per carry
1,139 Lamar Smith (2000), 3.7 per carry
1,117 Larry Csonka (1972), 5.2 per carry
1,116 Karim Abdul-Jabbar (1996), 3.6 per carry
1,051 Larry Csonka (1971), 5.4 per carry
1,003 Larry Csonka (1973), 4.6 per carry
1,000 Mercury Morris (1972), 5.3 per carry

If we idn't split so many carries back in the early 70's we would have had an 1800 yard rusher for sure. Look at those gaudy YPC #s. 5.4, 5.3, 5.2....what a joy it would be to have that kind of production these days.

when you have the great OL of all-time, you get lots of YPC :cooldude:

You said it 39.
Keuch, Langer, Little, Evans. Moore.
One of the best OL's ever.

That is pretty sad when you think about it: Jabaar and Smith then nothing. History means nothing now that we have the "Dreaded One" to carry us all over the place!! :jumper:

Damn right. And we also had tough-running Jim Kiick racking up yardage and scoring TDs. Man, that was a three-headed monster.

Why do you think we didn't have any 1000 yard rushers for so many years? I think it more to do with a lack of comitment to the run more than anything else. When you have Dan back there it is very easy to abandon your running game. We also didn't have a very good defense for a long time making it harder to have patience with the run.

totally, we sure drafted enough #1's at RB. but then again, you never saw Lo Hampton or Sammie Smith racking up yards once left they the Fins. The one RB that was special in the Marion era was David Overstreet and we all know the tragedy of his untimely death. That guy could flat out burn; but still you'd have to wonder if he'd ever get the carries to get to 1000 with Dan back there.
