I've seen it all now!!

It wasn't even the right call. I can't believe I agreed with Madden.

I agree. The call was awful -- He merely grabbed his jersey and there was no other way to make the tackle in the position he was in. They might as well just abolish defenses all together...just have a race to see how many yards the QBs can rack up....afteralll, that IS what Tagliabue wants to achieve.

Until one of the dolphins get injured by it. ;)

The horse collar tackle rule is a crock of $#!^. It was ok to pull Ricky down by his dreads two years ago, remember they called that part of the uniform. But you can't pull the guy down by the back of the collar of the shoulder pads, which is actually part of the uniform.

I agree with the old school players, the game is turning too soft.

BTW, the refs made a terrible call on that penalty. His hands were not inside the collar to make that call. :fire:

Right on Keith....maybe the NFL will end up one day being the New Flag football league...can't bump...can't tackle...and like the Dolphins O-line....can't block.

Is there a fundamental difference between grabbing inside the shoulder pads and grabbing the very top back of the jersey and pullng them down? I am really asking. That rule is going to be really hard to enforce so look for that bad call ALLOT in the future.

Why dont we just outlaw tackling from behind completely.

So I am curious. If a receiver catches a ball, and is slightly ahead of the defensive back, how exactly is the guy SUPPOSED to takle the receiver?

I guess if the DB is behind he should just give up?

Lame rule, and this league is getting pathetic. It is a collision sport, and the league is turning it into powder puff.

I think the call was bad, but I don't mind the rule. The refs just need to make sure that it actually happens before they call it. Based on that call and the overall performance, I can tell that it's a preseason for the refs too ... the group last night definitely need a little time to get back in the groove.

What's the diffference in that and pulling Ricky's hair 2 years ago ? It's a BS rule.

You can grab his shoulders, his legs, his mid-body ... many ways to tackle him. But if you horse-collar him, that's a much easier way to injure the player when there are so many other ways to tackle him.

I would compare the new rule to the "Denver blocking scheme". It will block the player, but it has a much larger tendency to injure the player when there are many other ways to accomplish the same thing.

The effect is pretty much the same. I think the NFL ruled that the hair was "part of the uniform" and therefore was legal. Maybe they just didn't like the dreadlocks and wanted Ricky to get a haircut. :D

With jerseys as tight as they are now, you have nothing to grab. It's TACKLE football, and the lame rules are getting out of control.

The new rule is:

The hand has to be inside the collar for the penalty to be called. Last night, he only grabbed the top of the jersey, his hand was never inside the shoulder pads. It was a bad call.

why don't they just make it flag football, or 2 hand touch??

pitiful

I'm all about protecting players, cause no one likes to see a guy injured (unless it's a bill, jet, or pat while playing against the phins)...I'm kidding about that. It just sucks to see a promising star, or anyone for that matter, get injured when it could be avoided. That being said, i think the refs should use some levity when they call it. On purpose vs accidental grab??

IF you asked 10,000 football fans which rules they would add, my guess is the number 1 rule would be to:

STOP chop blocks!!!

a lot of these rules are weakingin the game, and make it harder to compare players of differnt era's,how pathitic will it be in 40 years when AJ feeley will be the Csonka of this team (not skill wise but toughness) see what I'm getting at.
