Bears management and front office gets it.

The season is over and the fans are upset with Cutler, so they know that they can start a guy who is probably the worst quarterback currently on an NFL roster (and I'm not even exaggerating, Clausen is worse than Blaine Gabbert IMHO) without facing any backlash and improve their situation in the future.

It's brilliant. Kudos to the Bears.

This reeks of Trestman trying to improve his reputation on his way out the door. If he can get Clausen playing even half as good as McCown played last season, then he can pin the blame on Cutler and come out with some job offers on the table.

The crime here isn't the way Cutler is being treated, its that absolutely insane contract they handed him during the offseason. They should have let him walk or franchised-then-traded him. Keep McCown and groom a younger talent. I was appalled when they decided to let McCown walk, resign Cutler, and pass on Bridgewater in the draft. What a cluster****.

Sad thing is that team is a quarterback away from making some serious noise. Yet another example of what happens when you **** up the quarterback position.

Surprised it took this long and agreed, good move by the Bears.

We should make a move for Cutler after making a run at Matty Ice and Roethlisberger. Cutler would be a huge upgrade from Tannehill.

Question: What team benches a quarterback who signed a contract that pays him $22.5 million in 2014 and another fully-guaranteed $15.5 million in 2015?

______

The cap hit for trading Cutler would be fairly small, given that his 2014 pay started as a fully-guaranteed base salary. In March, $5 million was converted to a signing bonus, clearing $4 million in cap space that assisted with the signing of defensive end Jared Allen. That $4 million would hit the 2015 cap if Cutler is traded, but it would clear $11.5 million in total cap space for the next season. And it would get the Bears off the hook for $15.5 million that they owe Cutler whether he’s on the team or not.

So while the decision to bench Cutler is a message to the player and the fans that poor performances won’t be tolerated, it’s actually a message to every other team in the league. Cutler is available.

Who would possibly trade for Cutler? That’ll be the subject of another post.

Im no Cutler fan, but no. Their defense is an absolute abomination. Their line isnt good. The coaches refuse to run the football.

Cutler isnt that great but he's not even in competition for the worst problem the Bears have right now. Him being benched for Jimmy ****ing Clausen only proves my point.

Eight landing spots for Cutler. Not sure why they had the Dolphins in the picture.

Cutler won't be in the picture for the Cardinals, Browns, or Dolphins. That's a silly graphic. Honestly I don't think he will even be in the picture for the Bills. Orton isn't great but he's cheap, but I'd rather have a cheap Orton than a bank-breaking Cutler.

Though to be fair, I completely agree with tyler. I am no fan of Cutler, but it is impossible to watch the Bears play football and say "Yup they're just a QB away." They're a coach, a coordinator, a defense, better blocking, and maybe one less locker room cancer away from being good. Now, whether or not that one less locker room cancer is Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, or Martellus Bennett, I don't know, but you figure it out.

I should have been more clear: i meant for that franchise going forward. If you want to say coaching is the biggest problem at the moment, then fair enough. I consider it a given that Trestman and his crew are done.

Kyle Fuller and Lamarr Houston(currently injured) provide some young pieces to build around on defense. And they have Matt Forte at running back, if they are refusing to run the ball its not because that position lacks talent.
With Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffrey, Martellus Bennett, and Forte, they are stacked when it comes to toys for a quarterback to play with. Even with an underwhelming offensive line(who's isn't these days?) the quarterback should not have close to 30 turnovers. Thoroughly unacceptable. To say nothing of his habit of throwing teammates under the bus, never playing up to his ability, getting into passive aggressive conflicts with his coaches, and his general ****ty personality.

The books been out on Cutler since his Denver days. Hell, since his Vanderbilt days. Bench him. At the very least this keeps him healthy for when they try and trade him. The season is done, why risk losing out on a couple of second round picks?

I think that depends on if they keep their coaches.

That staff is all in. They don't have the quarterback of even the immediate future on that roster. And with no first round pick, they won't have a chance to get a quarterback of the future this coming draft. Orton, who i actually like, is nothing more than a game manager. If the Bears offer an acceptable price(and i think two 2nd round picks gets it done, possibly less) then i could easily see the Bills taking the chance.

Which, suffice it to say, i'm totally on board with. Get it done Buffalo. Going from EJ Manuel to Cutler would amuse me forever.

edit: That ****ing article...

I'd also worry about Jay Gruden surviving an RGIII-Cutler 1-2 punch. And no, not from a job standpoint -- I mean I'd have legitimate concerns about Jay Gruden coming out of that scenario alive.

Why it would happen: Because ignoring all the warning signs and bringing Jay Cutler and Kristin Cavallari to Gotham is the most Jetsy thing imaginable. John Idzik, Rex Ryan, Geno Smith and Michael Vick could all be swept out in the next few months. The next regime could select a quarterback in the draft and tab Cutler as a short-term solution while the kid is groomed. There are PSLs to sell, you know.

Why it wouldn't happen: Because, if there's a God up there, he knows Jets fans have already suffered too much.

If you think we have dysfunction, look at the Bears. They're OC was crying last week because it was leaked out that he said Chicago had buyer's remorse
