Players are lowballed on contracts all the time, all across the league and have been since the inception of free agency. It's just business, nothing personal. These players don't make it a habit to go on record afterwards to call out these organizations. It just doesn't happen.

The problem is that people that have had direct dealings with Ireland and Miami's front office go out of their way to make it a point to display their distaste for Jeff Ireland. I knew this guy was a prick a long time ago. A lot of people did.

I think it's fairly obvious that players and coaches avoid Miami and Jeff Ireland like the plague. Run-of-the-mill veterans like Richard Marshall and coaches looking for their first head coaching opportunity don't really count.


The issue is that Ireland has yet to be held accountable for anything. Nothing. All he gets are excuses made for him by the same people that are stuck in a perpetual state of denial, and have been throughout all the regimes.

The difference when Parcells was here was that he at least had a reputation as a coach. He was always able to get "his people", both players and coaches to follow him around to all of his reclamation projects. No matter how overrated or injured the free agents were, Miami was at least able to land the players in large part due to Parcells and his reputation as a football COACH.

Jeff Ireland has no such reputation. I have no idea what he's ever accomplished that gives him such a high opinion of himself that tends to piss off everyone he's ever encountered... but I'd be willing to sit through a snoozefest of a power point presentation just to give him the opportunity to show me what he's done. Then I'd like for him to sit through my presentation showing him precisely what all he's failed to do.

Every move he makes is a lateral move at best, most of them backwards moves. He cannot build a winning football team, nor a winning culture.

Ireland is nothing but Stephen Ross' lapdog, which is why he still has a job. That's why they traded for the headcase Brandon Marshall in the first place. When that didn't work out, he had to get rid of him 2 years later for less than he what paid for him. He has no plan. His plan is to do whatever buys him another week of job security.

I figured that out 3 years ago.

I've never defended Ireland, nor have i supported him. What i will say at this point is that when there's this much fire out there....from the ridiculous comments to Dez Bryant to how he comes across in press conferences and now all this talk of the demise of the Dolphins b/c nobody trusts the guy at the top.....SOMETHING has to be going on there, something has to be true. There's just too much. If he had a great track record of bringing in talent (like Parcells), it wouldn't matter what people thought about him b/c he would still be respected. But it doesn't even sound like Ireland is respected....to go along with liked or trusted. So what's the benefit to keep him and put up with this PR nightmare? Especially in a town that is so fickle that we have trouble bringing in fans as is.

Yep been saying this all along the guy knows what hes doing so let it run its course then you can critique the situation!.....Just so many GOOFS on this forum that dont know **** about anything they just want that "Big Splash" regaurdless if its detrimental to the team....All this negativity is rediculous to say the least its an embarassment being that we still havent even got to the draft yet and its clear thats what Philiben wants to build through the draft cause he knows that great franchises hand pick their players to fit THEIR system not go off what the FANS think which is all based off hype PATHETIC!!!!!!!(Dan Snyder hows that working brother? Yes I know weve been bad in the past with everything (wanny, cam, fist pump boy, parcells, saban ect in no particular order but all clowns with no direction which set us back because of their egos and not doing the right things to build for future) their gone now and this year in my opinion is looking good so far I love it they are building a solid foundation for the future so we will never have the BS posts were seeing with all this negativity ever again...Give it time have patience this is a whole new regime with all highly regarded coaches around the league and if jeff was such an ******* or they felt the direction of the team was heading for disater then they wouldnt have came to this org period, so I think I like our chances these guys know what it takes to win period end of story.

Way to go Jeff stick up for yourself cause the majority of these clowns havent got a clue. So to all the negative JAG OFFs just stick to Madden im sure you guys are great gms on there and you know who you are!!

I don't have a problem with the rebuilding. The point is, I didn't agree with Ireland trading for Brandon Marshall in the first place. I'm glad the headcase is gone, but the point is, Ireland is clueless.

Didn't want Peyton Manning either. That also has nothing to do with Jeff Ireland's belligerence.


I don't think Ireland goes around offering contracts to quarterbacks that he isn't interested in signing. None of them want to be in Miami. It's no different than his pursuit of Kyle Orton last year that Ross had to step in and save the franchise from.

I don't "trust" any of 'em. That doesn't mean Philbin is on my sh*t list either, unlike Ireland. Philbin has a chance to prove himself on gamedays.

But I don't believe that they're out there pursuing QB's just to look busy either. Whether Philbin saw Flynn as a franchise QB or not is irrelevant.... I doubt they see David Garrard as a franchise QB either but the fact is, Garrard's desperation is likely only matched by Miami's.

I honestly think the only QB they wanted (badly) was Manning. They took their shot and missed.

Now that he is no longer an option, they are looking to the draft for our QB of the future.

My guess is they brought Flynn in and offered him a much smaller (and shorter) deal than Seattle and said prove yourself.

Flynn balked at the offer and took more money from Seattle.

If you look at Garrard's contract, it is clear they don't see him as a long term solution either.

I honestly think our QB of the future is in this years' draft.

I think they are high on Tannehill and if they don't get him, Weeden and Cousins are not bad options either.

Ross will stick with Ireland (at least until after the draft), but I can pretty much guarantee that Philbin and Sherman are doing ALL the rebuilding on the offensive side of the ball.

I don't think Philbin is desperate at all for a QB for the fact alone he sees his QB in this draft.

Ireland maybe be a douche, but fact is Ross liked him and will let him run this team for at least this offseason.

I cam guess that Ross has Ireland on a short leash though.

Jeff Ireland was named as the Dolphins' General Manager on January 2, 2008. He joined the club after a seven-year stint (2001-07) with the Dallas Cowboys, including his last three seasons there as the team's Vice President of College and Pro Scouting. In his role with the Dolphins, Ireland is not only responsible for overseeing and coordinating the college and pro personnel departments, but also helps manage the team's salary cap and player contracts. He supervises all scouting efforts that relate to the college draft, free agency, the Canadian Football League, and personnel of the other 31 NFL teams. Ireland works hand in hand with Head Coach Tony Sparano in implementing a personnel plan to build the Dolphins into a championship caliber team.
In Ireland's three seasons in Miami, he already has seen some of his acquisitions play a key role in the development of the team. This past season, Jake Long made the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive year while Cameron Wake and Randy Starks blossomed into Pro Bowl performers for the first time. Veteran acquisitions such as Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby and Richie Incognito were major contributors to the Dolphins, while rookie draft choice Koa Misi was a starter for the team all season. Following the 2010 season, Ireland significantly upgraded the team's offense through the college draft.
In 2009, quarterback Chad Henne, seeing his first significant playing time, won seven of his 13 starts and so far in his career already has accumulated more 300-yard passing games than any quarterback other than Dan Marino in Dolphin history. Rookies also made an immediate impact as Vontae Davis and Sean Smith excelled as starters together in the team's defensive backfield while Brian Hartline made important contributions offensively.
Inheriting a 1-15 team in 2008, Ireland's first season in Miami, he worked with Executive Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells and Sparano to overhaul the team's roster. Their efforts resulted in an 11-5 mark, the AFC East title and a playoff berth, a turnaround unprecedented in NFL annals.
Ireland replaced almost half of the roster, bringing on board 27 new faces, including nine new starters. One of those newcomers, quarterback Chad Pennington, went on to win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award and finished tied for second in voting for the league's Most Valuable Player award.
Also among the new faces Ireland brought on board in 2008 were 11 rookies who made the team, including eight draft choices, three of whom were in the opening day starting lineup. Long, the team's first pick of the draft, went on to earn Pro Bowl honors at the conclusion of the season. Ireland added rookie talent beyond the draft, as Davone Bess had the second-highest single-season reception total in the last 40 years among undrafted college free agents in their rookie season, while rookie free agent kicker Dan Carpenter led the Dolphins in scoring.
In 2007, Ireland's last season in Dallas, the Cowboys went 13-3 and won the NFC East title. Of the 53 players on the active roster, 38 had been acquired over the three years (2005-07) Ireland served as the team's Vice President of Scouting. Seven of those players made the Pro Bowl during that time, including DeMarcus Ware (Ireland's first pick as the team's lead scout), fellow 2005 fourth round selections Chris Canty and Marion Barber, 2007 draft choice Nick Folk and two free agent acquisitions that season, Leonard Davis and Ken Hamlin. In addition, since Ireland arrived in Dallas, seven other Cowboys made their Pro Bowl debuts.
Ireland began his tenure with the Cowboys as the team's national scout in 2001, evaluating all of the top collegiate prospects in the country. In his four years in that role, his skill as a talent evaluator helped lead to the drafting of four Pro Bowl performers, Roy Williams (who was selected five straight years), Terence Newman, Andre Gurode and Jason Witten.
Prior to joining the Cowboys, Ireland spent four years in Kansas City as an area scout helping the Chiefs draft players like Dante Hall in the fifth round and Greg Wesley in the third round. Ireland started his NFL career evaluating talent as an area scout for the National Football Scouting Combine from 1994-1996.
Before becoming a full-time talent evaluator, Ireland helped coach special teams at the University of North Texas from 1992-1993. He was a four-year starter as a placekicker at Baylor University from 1988-1991, finishing his collegiate career third on Baylor's all time scoring list with 213 points. His 45 career field goals, which included a 58-yard effort against Rice in 1991, established a school record for field goals made. Following his senior season he was selected as the South team's kicker in the 1992 Senior Bowl.

I get the impression that he along with the coaches want to draft a QB. They probably have been eyeing drafting a QB for some time now.

Yeah Manning is an exception but at the end of the day THIS IS WHAT EVERYONE WANTED! A young QB that this team can take a chance on.

Manning - The media blew it all up on how Miami was ever a realistic destination for Manning. We don't have the pieces that Manning wants to fall into place too.

Flynn - IF PHILBIN WANTED HIS BOY, THE TEAM WOULD HAVE! The Fins didn't and it seemed like common sense that if they didn't pursue him hard (low offers don't count as pursuing him heavily) then Philbin doesn't believe he is the best fit for this team. So I'm glad we didn't bring him in.

Smith - Alex Smith?! This situation was something this team definitely didn't foresee coming about until the 49'ers jumped into the Manning race (for real and not just media specualtion) out of left field. This is the definition of what this team has been insanely repeating. Bringing in a QB who has shined briefly over years but has never amounted to much. His upside was having a pretty solid season the year before. Had this been the Fins choice I could live with it, but I probably wouldn't have been happy. Who knows what he would be able to do in this offense. I'm guessing the team dodged a bullet here. We would have been locked into him for a few years. But if they really wanted him they would have put the offer through.

How can we blame the guy if he thinks (along with Philbin/Sherman) that drafting a QB mixed with the QB's they have is the best option. How much of an upgrade would Smith have been? Tough to answer because he you don't know how he would adapt to the offensive system the Fins will have.

I guess I am in the minority, being happy that our team didn't "settle" for a QB in FA. To me Manning was never an option, Flynn was not worth it in our teams opinion to bring in for "relatively" cheap, and they didn't want to SETTLE on Alex Smith and his bust baggage. Can you fault him for that? I can't. But everyone is going to be crapping their pants over the first few weeks of FA because aside from Manning, there weren't any "franchise" QB's available for them to take. You could really argue the numbers on Matt Moore vs. Alex Smith and they are in the same ballpark.

Wait until the whole plan unfolds and stop taking every word the media spews out as fact. This whole situation has been blown way out of proportion. Yeah the team looks bad and most of us aren't thrilled with Ross and Ireland but I can't blame them for not wanting Flynn and Smith.

I dont think so. they tore this team apart. All respect to Moore but we do not have a elite QB, we have the worse WR's group in the NFL, we have holes all along the O-line, All respects to fasano but we have one of the worse TE groups in the NFL, We have holes all along the DL, we have holes in the LB group, We have holes in the secondary.....We have a great kicking game!!!!!

See where JI went wrong is he had a decent team that needed some building. Instead he made the team worse. Marshall made the WR group decent but we traded him (for 2 3rd round picks) then to make matters worse we did NOTHING to even replace him. There were decent players out there and we fumbled them all. I agree other then Manning there were no other QB's out there. But JI had to know that the fan base would be moved if we did not get manning or Flynn. To ease the situation you do not trade Marshall, I'm sorry. Stupid move. You have Winston in here. we need an O-line player BAD. You fumble and dont sign him. He WANTED to be in Miami too. Many believed that if we had better Olinbe play wew could compete. We let him walk away.
Now the only offensive position that has a play maker is RB and me personally believe we need a better back then thomas and I really felt thet BJGE is a great pick up for us.

we DID NOTHING on defense. NOTHING we signed a back up corner that maybe can play saftey. Then we cut bell.

Am I the only one that caught this gem? Every year they miss their guy and every year when they sign their second, third, or, fourth option we get the well he was really our gut. And here it is! Don't give me this Garrard was a Probowler crap either that is nothing more then a popularity contest and if memory servesme correct he played in it the year it was in Miami before the Superbowl and most everyone sat out. David flipping Garrad and some of you are happy? The irony is many of the happy ones didn't want Manning because his neck surgery.
