Jeff Ireland, success / failure?

Ireland has done well everywhere but at QB, unfortunately that's a extremely important position. If we do get a QB soon, or Henne finally "gets it", then we are set. So it's like he has put together this great body, but it still doesn't have a brain, or at least one that works consistently.

I'll say one thing for Ireland....at least he hasn't drafted anybody's entire family.

I still say this regime could screw up Matt Ryan, and caused him to fail. Imagine what Henning could have done. =) Where I lack confidence in our staff is in coaching up guys on the offensive side of the ball. At least particularly at QB. Hell our OLine guru can't even get the line together.

We had the worst team I've ever seen 4 years ago. We now have every piece but a QB. Yes the most important piece but everything is starting to come together. I think the oline could be better as well but we have some talent obviously there. If for some reason the fo gets fired some new coach is going to be very happy with the prices he is inheriting, especially a guy like Cowher who runs a 3-4. Gruden gets credit for Tampa when that was dungy's team. The same thing going to happen here.

As you rightly said the QB & O'line are whats at fault. Sparano's constant tinkering with both has resulted in the lack of quality. As Omar Kelly stated, we are a run first team, who are struggling to run the ball.

Next year, if our D continues to improve I wand Nolan as HC, with Ireland calling shots in draft. We are a QB away from being very good in my mind. What worries me is NE has Tom Brady & Mallett, while Jets have a young Mark Sanchez. We are already a couple of years behind.

I was wondering how well Jeff Ireland has performed as GM. Which made me consider, what makes a successfull draft?

Bill Polian stated his formula as; ‘I think you have to divide it into top 12 and bottom 20. If you’re in the top 12, it ought to be in the .640 range. That’s about 4.5 guys on average per year out of the seven. You measure that at the end of three years and what you are measuring is whether or not those guys become winning players, guys that contribute to wins. Bottom 20 is .571, that’s four out of seven’.

Based on this formula:-

2007 (1st pick)
Jake Long
Philip Merling
Chad Henne
Kendall Langford
Shaun Murphy
Jalen Parmale
Donald Thomas
Lex Hilliard
Lionel Dotson
Devone Bess
Dan Carpenter

We hit 5/11, even with Chad Henne at .450, well below the expected .640.

2008 (25th pick)
Vontae Davis
Pat White
Shaun Smith
Patrick Turner
Brian Hartline
John Nalbone
Chris Clemons
Andrew Gardener
J.D.Folsom
We hit 4/9 at .440, again well below the expected .571

2009 (traded down to pick at #28)
Jared Odrick
Koa Misi
John Jerry
AJ Edds
Nolan Carroll
Reshard Jones
Chris McCoy
Austin Spitler

I know this is a bit hard to judge, but in my mind, Odrick, Misi, Edds, Carroll & Reshard Jones will all contribute this year, resulting in 5/8 players with a hit of .625.

Based on Polian’s philosophy, in my mind, only last year was a successful draft.

Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt bases success on this formula, "If you look historically, teams get 2.3 starters per draft and as a team, I think you need to strive to get three starters per draft, or I should say players worthy of starting.

Based on this principle:-

2007
Not including Chad Henne, we had 4 players worthy of starting status, Long, Langford, Bess & Carpenter.

2008
Again I would say we had 4 players, V.Davis, S.Smith, Hartline & Clemons

2009
I would say only 3 have an oppurtunity to start, Odrick, Misi & Reshard Jones.

Based on this principle, Ireland has been very succesful.

Although Ireland has been successful in drafting starters, or players worthy to start, in my mind where we have struggled is players who are able to contribute. Look at this stat - http://www.drafttek.com/consolidatednfldraft-stillwithteam.asp.

I think the draft’s have been somewhat symptomatic to our success as a franchise. We have the players compete on depth chart, but below the surface we do not have the roster to contribute to a winning franchise.
u really cant argue that jeff ireland has been the miami dolphins best gm/drafter for us since we had jimmy johnson drafting our players.i know jimmy wasnt really a gm tho. we all need to give ireland a break cause im real happy with all the talent he brung in so far.ill take ireland every day of the week and twice on sundays over randy muller,SPEILMAN,saban, and even parcells himself.

I do agree. I like Jeff Ireland and IMO the 2008 draft where they 'went away from their principles' was the killer.

it all starts with the qb, i dont care how good your o-line is, with no qb you aint doing jack ****. Ireland has had 3-4 years to get us a 1st round qb and he has passed up every time. I would not want him as my gm thats for sure.

so do me a favor and tell me what franchise qbs ireland has passed up?jake long over matt ryan was all parcells and at the time it was the right move.after that 07 draft i dont recall us in any position to draft any franchise qbs do u?.

Ireland has done well everywhere but at QB,

Justin Smiley
Jake Grove
Donald Thomas
Shaw Murphy
Andrew Gardner
Lydon Murtha
Nate Garner
Joe Berger
John Jerry
Richie Incognito
Pat McQuistan
Marco Columbo
and
Jake Long

Hes done real well with the offensive line...hasn't he???:err:

2008
2009
2010
2011
4 years of drafts and free agency and we're left with this pile of crap
and still in the process of rebuilding

GM is not just about drafting. Its also about finding upgrades and coaches. He scores big with Nolan. He has taken a new step at O with Daboll. Parsells really screwed us in a few spots and now he flies coup. The bad responses to Ireland do not take that into account. Cam Wake is also a steal.

if Jimmy Wilson ends up a big player in the league, that is a major league steal. Gates and Clay to be seen but I think Gates will be huge part of this O. This years draft is left out and so it is an incomplete conclusion here. Next year will be huge QB year. I would be way against getting rid of Ireland because I believe he has a good grasp of it now when Parsells left. His fingerprints are all over the last two drafts which were very good provided we upgrade overall.

I am all for one more draft for Ireland for sure. but much still remains to be seen.

I have been a critic of this FO however because of the Parcells factor it was difficult to place credit/blame.

To me Ireland seems like a GM that can ID talent I actually defend him to my friends in regards to the single
difference maker in football and especially the NFL is the QB!, now its nothing new around here to have a
coach/GM not value the QB pos.(Johnson,Wannstedt,Saban) all seemed to think a journeyman QB can win.

History proves that belief false, back to Ireland I dont think he can be criticised for not drafting a QB(I wont put
the Matt Ryan decission on Ireland-and Im not sure Ryan is an elite QB)or signing a FA QB.

His willingness to attempt to aquire a QB(Orton) tells me he understands where is team is, and he is willing to
try and improve the team.
I dont believe and I think Ireland does as well, you cant just give away the farm for a player at a position of need just because he is available.
You trade for a players value not your teams need, to my point I feel this year Ireland is content to put a
period on Chad Henne either he proves he is a NFL starting QB or Ireland moves on, its no secrete the '12 draft will be QB heavy with atleast 5 QB's viewed as first round talent.

Im willing to see Ireland through this year & next draft if Henne isnt the answer and Ireland doesnt address the QB issue then I would accept the fact that he isnt capable of improving this team.

But you must remember that the miami dolphins are getting production out of these Ireland drafts
there was a time when Wannstedt & Saban couldnt get a draft pick to stick in the league let alone make
a play on the field.

I think he's done a decent job in the Draft. There is a lot of talent on the defensive line, the WR position is probably the strongest it's been in years, the secondary looks young and promising. I would say a lot better than his predecessors that's for damn sure. For me, though it all comes down to ONE thing.... Did he find a franchise quarterback? The answer CLEARLY is NO. That really drops his grade as a GM for me.

Ireland can draft defense give an a
ireland gets a d in drafting offense..
Look no good tightends drafted
if you wanna be a good running team you need a couple good tight ends Fail
Line is horrendous FAIL the thomas running back looks like jimmy johnson
we didnt have to trade extra for him and cold have got similar talent plus mallet fail
New year same **** need a QB fail...

Did pretty decent. But failed with the most important position--Quarterback. Draft brought us pretty good players, but missed the whole point by not addressing quarterback. Got lucky by getting Pat Devlin as UFA to make up for the draft---hope they don't blow it again by cutting him. Totally blew it with Mallet though. Blew it with Mat Ryan also.

Did good with Livas--hope they don't blow it and try to send him to practice squad.
Did good with Wilson--hope they use him alot.
Probably made a mistake with this Daniel Thomas thing.
Should have kept either Ricky or Ronnie this year--at least for insurance (Running back this year is a gamble).
I have a good feeling about Grigsby and not about Sheets
Really wish we could have gotten Harbaugh....not too sure about Sporano.

Nothing really matters without a QB. SO far he gets a D from me. You can't have FOUR offseasons to improve a roster, take over a 1 - 15 train wreck, and NOT do everything in your power to get a freaking QB.
