JJ and Saban

I guess another way to say this, we were the Miami Dolphins when JJ took over, a team that was always in the playoffs and good. So we just thought it would be the same but maybe better!

Then came last year!

So Saban brings in new hope! A new hope to bring the Miami Dolphins back to where we belong! Super Bowl champs! I think people are more optimismistic now because of being at the bottom.

well said!

All i'm saying is that this team has been better than average, but not great for the past 10 years or so. Will Saban get us over that hump? The dolphins are one of my passions. But, that hootie song, says it all sometimes, "yah...the dolphins make me cry."

As a fan and speaking with my heart, I say, of course he will. For no other reason than as a fan, I have all the hope and faith in the world. However, I also watch Saban's demeanor, listen to him, look at his draft, his past success, even if in college, everywhere he's gone, people have bought into what he's selling and coaching... now Jr, Zach, and Madison have all come out and prasied this defense and their opportunity to be even better than they were under Bates, that speaks alot. I think J.J. had his rings, but never really proved why he would repeat that success, Nick has come in and so far, done eveything right.. will he get us over the hump, maybe, maybe not, but, in my opinion, there's nobody out there any more qualified to give it a try with..

I haven't been on this board that long, but when Jimmy became coach, was the optimism higher? I would think this board was going crazy when he became coach due to his reputation, plus we still had Dan.

Like your last 4 words.....we still had DAN

hopeful in what way? JJ drafted some pretty good players when he was here. And yet we didn't get to far with him, what in this regime is different. I would be even more tentative, JJ had all the credentials, 3 super bowls. Saban is a college coach, i'm hoping not the next spurrier or butch davis.

JJ drafted some excellent defenders but missed badly on several offensive picks...that started a nearly-10 yr. saga of all defense-no offense in Miami. Too one-sided & predictable.

My expectations were high when Jimmy came to town. Change is good. My expectations are even higher with Saban because he gets it....if something isn't working, try something else. He's smart and will bring some intensity back to this coaching staff that has been sorely missed at the top.

Actually, yes...the optimism was much higher...most people agree that we will improve next year, perhaps 8-8 or 9-7, but not to expect much more...With JJ...we were talking SB his first or second year.

What i'm hoping that Saban will do, is to put that Kill instinct into our team, put them away in the second half. I didn't like wanny ball, in that keep it close and win it in the fourth quarter. I'm thinking more like the Rams in their super bowl win year, I want that type of beat down.

I was very optimistic when JJ took over, having seen his success in Dallas and his impressive use of scouting and the draft. I think he set the standard for the modern draft showing how trading for picks and bringing in lots of players to compete could rebuild a team in a hurry. Further, he showed another masterful touch in that philosophy because it was great in terms of the salary cap. He was able to protect his team from bust draft picks, get young players who could play and pay them later-round salaries after/if they developed. Unfortunately this is a copycat league and other teams now employ the same tactics. Late-round picks are more valuable now as are rookie free-agents.

JJ had some problems in Miami, I think many of them stemmed form his boundless ego. He had trouble deciding whether he or Dan should rule the team. Also, as pointed out, he had some problems drafting on the offensive side. He was criticized frequently for game management decisions, and I thought, it was too much about him instead of about the team.

I had less disdain for Wannstedt than most I read about here, but although he tried his guts out to do things right, he just had one major flaw. He was a born defensive coordinator. It takes a very special individual to be a head coach. I was fortunate to have worked for one of the best, although he died before gaining fame, it was amazing how his personality could captivate you as a player, as a coach, as a fan, such that you would do anything for the guy. Sure he knew football, X's, O's, talent, etc.("leave that stuff to the assistants...") But more than that, he knew people: his coaches, his opponents, the league, the reporters, everybody, and you felt special just getting to talk to him and to hear a kind word from him meant the world. He was a Head Coach, a leader of leaders, and success just naturally followed.

I think Saban is such a man. He was highly sought-after by other teams and named as the "The Man" by Marino, Shula and other Dolphin Execs. I think he has the potential to be one of football's greatest coaches. He has already learned from some of the best and has been able to attract some of the best position coaches in football. Now he seems to be endearing himself to the players. Yet he doesn't seem to have the ego of a JJ or Parcells, but shows some of the humility of Belichick. Yet Belichick is a little too humble. He is history's most successful Defensive Coordinator Head Coach who has no relationship with the media and football's owners and big-money shakers. He doesn't have a polished side. Like the opposite of Dan Reeves who had no muddy side. I think Nick has it all. He has what you really need to be a successful coach, RESPECT & LEADERSHIP! He seems to have respect from everyone from the equipment manager to the Commissioner. Look for Nick to be our next Hall of Fame coach. Look for great Dolphins success in the future which is now!

Richmond Webb to the Hall!

Saban is in a much better position now than JJ was when he came to Miami. First, Saban inherits a 4-12 with minimal expectations. JJ came into a situation where the team was in the playoffs with Dan Marino under center. Second, Saban is replacing the greatest black eye in Dolphin history while JJ replaced the second greatest legend.
They both have similar backgrounds...humble upbringings, psychology degrees, college national championships. Let's just hope the next similarity comes to fruition...Superbowl championships with their first NFL team.

Excellent Post Rich Webb.....Well written and thought out. I totally agree on Jimmy Johnson....if only he were as smart and shrewd as he thinks he is. Personally, I never wanted Johnson as Dolphin Head Coach. I didn't like the way he campaigned for Coach Shula's job and undermined him in the media....so I'm biased on that subject. Let's just say I'm happy that era is over and we can let it slip into history.

I am extremely optimistic about Nick Saban. Saban is obviously a bright guy who loves the chess match aspect of football. Nick will make adjustments when needed and have the team prepared to play. I just want a team that is competitive and plays smart football....plays the right way. I want to see us play as team not as a group of talented individuals. If we get lucky and find a Qb (Feeley or someone else) we've got a chance to have a winning record this year and be really good in a couple of years.

The measure of a great coach, in my mind, is not necessarily Super Bowl championships. You have to be very lucky to assemble a team that actually wins a championship. A better measure is how competitive is your team year after year. I want what we had when Shula was here. We were in the running year in, year out. I believe that's what Saban is building.

All I have to say about JJ is 7 words "JOHN FREAKEN AVERYOVER RANDY FREAKIN MOSS,
