One of Joe Philbin's first projects as coach of the Miami Dolphins begins in the trenches.

In the Tony Sparano era, the Dolphins thought big on the offensive line, preferring size over speed.

Philbin is now tasked with transitioning the line to match what he wants to do with the ball. Athleticism is favored over brawn in the zone-blocking schemes of the West Coast offense.
“We need to get a handle on what these guys do well,” Philbin said of his current offensive line, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “What areas they need to improve upon and hopefully we can add to the mix a little bit, provide a little more competition and improve.”

I'm glad he wants us to get more athletic, as opposed to becoming more unathletic. Its always great to hear a coach say that

If you look at the Texans and who they had on their line a lot of their players were drafted in the later rounds. Eric Winston and Chris Myers, two former Miami Hurricanes, were drafted in the 3rd and 6th round respectively. Duane Brown (LT) was a 1st round pick, 26th overall, Wade Smith was a 3rd round pick by us and Wannstedt tried him as a tackle and he sucked but he's playing LG for them and doing well and Antoine Caldwell is the RG and was a 3rd round pick.

In Green Bay they have Marshall Newhouse at LT (5th round pick), Evan Dietrich-Smith at LG (undrafted), Scott Wells at Center (7th round pick, although he is now with St. Louis and been replaced with Jeff Saturday), Josh Sitton at RG (4th round pick) and Bryan Bulaga at RT (1st round pick, 23rd overall).

It seems to me you can find athletic O-lineman later in the draft, something Ireland and Sparano couldn't figure out.

Philbin is the one thing I'm optimistic about this season. He knows his ****.

I can't speak for the rest of GBs O-line but its ironic of the people you mentioned the only "1st" rd pick might be the worst. I clearly remember him getting abuse by Wake and a few other players.

At the very least he communicates as though he does. If his coaching is anything like his communication(some will say their the same) from that perspective alone i think it gives us a few more wins than last season.

I like this move everything starts up front.
Everything starts at the QB. A more athletic line is a good change though, so long as it doesn't take more first rounders to build it.

I like Philbin a lot too. Feel like they should have been going after him all along and not after Fisher. At least out on the field thing will be different if he has something to say about it.

Ozzy rules!!

Decastro #8...wait n c if tannehill is gone.lol I wouldn't be to upset though

Let's see. On the one hand, someone who will not start for a season and may or may not develop into a top NFL QB. On the other hand, a can't miss, dominating guy at a position of need.

Drafting DeCastro in the first round will set this franchise back for another ten years.

On one hand you continue to ignore the most important position on the field cause you're scared of failure and on the other hand the team never gets better because your too scared to draft a QB...either way you lose.

Do you know who led the league in least amount of sacks given up? Buffalo.

Tony Bergstrom with a 3rd rounde.r Tom Compton in the 4th. Jeff Adams in the 5th round.

With young Pouncey and maybe Jerry,(if he can keep his weight down), these five guys could guarantee a solid to great OL for years to come.
