Jonathan Martin traded to San Francisco

We get the pick regardless.

Miami will receive a conditional seventh-round pick in 2015 if Martin is on San Francisco's opening 53-man roster is what I have read

Remember how awesome a GM Ireland was just a year ago. Its funny how every year we are geniuses in the draft and free agency and then people suddenly forget what they said

Gabbert had enough talent to be drafted in the first round and went to an awful team, which may have skewed things with him. From that point of view, I can understand why SF would give up a late 6th round pick to acquire him. But would you give up a 6th round draft pick for Chad Henne? Because that's about what we're asking here.

The 49ers are loaded with talent and depth from top to bottom, so they can afford to try reclamation projects with late round picks. That's about the only justification I can see for it.

Thank you. Jesus people act like they gave up a third round pick to waste a second round pick on Danial Thomas

To be fair, dlockz, I wouldn't have done it, and if you put a gun to my head and asked 'moron or no moron' about the trade for Gabbert, I would have to answer 'moron.'

But there was some logic behind it. I think it was a waste of a draft pick, but that's basically where the 49ers are right now. They're so deep that anyone they pick in the 6th is unlikely to make the roster anyway, so why not take a shot on a guy who was drafted in the first round a few years ago and struggled in a bad situation? Maybe he can be saved.

Please explain how this is a high risk move?

Let me put it this way, Gabbert lost his starting job to Chad Henne last year. If you think he could step in during an injury to Colin Kaepernick and help the team win, then you haven't seen this guy play.

This idea of yours that you can afford to throw away 6th round picks on players with no NFL future is not very well thought out. You have a better chance drafting a decent player with that pick than Gabbert ever becoming a decent QB.

Plus SF has a mountain of picks this year.
These are low risk moves by them.

there's no logic behind it...gabberts a puss...doesn't matter what uniform you put him in...his jax teammates saw it his san fran ones will too...he should be out of the league frankly but that will come in time...i guess they gonna run a totally different offense with him in there than kaep also cause they are not anywhere close to the same kind of players

This guy plays scared. Deer in a headlights scared. He's afraid of the game, turns over the ball way too much, and is apparently in love with himself. This guy is what he is.

I agree, but if you're a great football team with an alpha male coach who has worked miracles with some other scrubs, maybe you think you can somehow change that leopard's spots.

I'm just saying that while I agree that it's a waste of a draft pick, and that I think Blaine Gabbert has no future beyond clipboard duty in the NFL, I understand why the 49ers felt like this was a good risk to take.

San Fran has 4 7th round picks and along with the Colts are the only teams expressing any interest in welcoming Martin.
It cost them very little or nothing at all if he does not make the roster.
That's a pretty good estimation of his worth. Very little or nothing at all.

who cares?

no one wanted him on our roster and the symbolism of trading him to another team is more valuable than any pick we would be receiving for him, conditional or not.

I think you have a better chance of finding the next Tom Brady with your 6th round pick than you do with "Blame" Gabbert becoming a viable QB option.

Even his former coaches said he lacks accountability and leadership, couple that with poor play and this guy will be out of the league when his contract expires. I'd put money on that.

How can u say he has no NFL future. Chad Henne was not wanted here and he is still in NFL. In fact he is still better than most qb's drafted in sixth round. Gabbert as bad as he is has still had more of an NFL career and is more likely to stay in the NFL than almost any sixth round pick qb.
Last year SF drafted BJ Danials and he did not make team and was on another teams practice squad. No sixth round qb made any impact or played last year. In fact since 2005 they have been very few sixth round qb's that even started games or played. The best of the bunch was probably Matt Cassell as far as longevity and he is quite the exception. He is already better most qb's that have been drafted in the sixth round where you are more likely to get a Jordan Palmer type at best. Matt Flynn was a late round pick but not one sixth round pick with the exception of Brady since 1999 has been any teams long term starter.

Blaine Gabbert was Chad Henne's backup last year. Chad Henne is light years better than Gabbert, as a player and as a person. It would probably serve you well to watch a game or two of Jax before defending Gabbert's potential.

An yet they have done more than the majority of sixth round qb picks which is my point. That statement u made has nothing to do with my point. Blaine Gabbert is a 24 year old football qb and could possibly get better. Steve Young stunk it up in TB, imagine if he never made it to a good team.
Gabbert is not Young but at his age and supposed talent that most nfl teams saw as at least a second rounder he is worth the risk. Basically because a sixth round pick is no risk.
