Jonathan Martin traded to San Francisco

I heard the pick is conditional based on the amount of time he gets bullied - the more he's bullied the better the pick will be.

I'm truly surprised that anyone would take the basket case off our hands.. This move is impressive for this gm

Hickey quickly removing the Ireland stench like a boss!

Colin Kaepernick suddenly increased his salary demands in the hope that the 49ers trade him out of that division immediately upon learning that his new potential backup LT is Jonathan Martin.

Of course, the 49ers will have to wade out that lawsuit before using Martin. There is that lawsuit, remember? It's all about the money. Ben Volin said so. That master of flawed conventional wisdom Ben Volin. He was actually applauded here for saying so, by the avalanche of posters who similarly have no clue toward applied probability.

Then there's the matter of Martin never playing in the NFL again. No one will want him, that weakling. I read that at least a thousand times. There should have been a laugh track every time it was posted.

There's a guy here who says he is taking names, for ridicule purposes after Tannehill explodes into dominance. He's among the posters who asserted that nobody would want Martin. I don't need to take names because I'm well used to being far above the curve in terms of understanding what is likely and what is not. That ability led me to Las Vegas in the mid '80s.

The shame on this board is the identity of many posters who took the hard mocking line on the Martin matter. With some guys, you know they'll overreact to everything, grasping the simplistic bar stool angle. Others invariably trend higher. Much higher. Not the case in this situation. Some of the otherwise sharpest guys abused the lowest language and butchered every relevant opinion.

And I have to laugh at the posters who are ripping the 49ers for pursuing Gabbert and Martin. Talk about subjectively clueless and overmatched. That's what astute organizations do, understand the value of taking once highly rated guys who have fallen out of favor. You're not trying to hit 100%. If you do it often enough the win percentage will tilt in your favor, and not by a little bit.

ESPN is such a whore. My app went off for this trade meanwhile it is about 1,039 on the relevance scale of today's NFL news.

If the story included "Martin bullied in Dophin lockerroom while leaving for San Fran" That would have jacked it up to #1 on the ESPN Relevance scale....sad.

This is the best move Hickey has made so far. Now we don't have to take heat for cutting him. Even if it is the pick just before Mr. Irrelevant that we get, it's a great trade.

So much ridiculousness and douchebaggery in this post I don't even know where to begin. :bobdole:

If anyone has any idea what you are talking about hats off to them.

This. Not that I expect these two particular moves to do anything for the 49ers, but this is the same technique the Patriots used so many times and the 49ers themselves benefited from with Donte Whitner and Carlos Rogers, both of whom flamed out with their original teams but were considered top talents coming out of the draft and were molded by the 49ers into useful players. If that wasn't enough to buy them some credibility, they did the same thing with Ahmad Brooks, who in college was considered a potential top 10 pick before he ran into problems and they likewise got a few useful years out of Manny Lawson, who flamed out as a first round defensive end before finding a home as a gigantic strongside linebacker.

If you're going to take on a reclamation project, you can do worse than taking a chance on a former top pick who flamed out. At least there's something there to build on. Or at least, there was once some kind of consensus there was something there.

I mean, what's really more likely, that a Nolan Carroll takes the next step into top tier status or that a former top 10 pick starts acting like it? That's their thinking, and to be honest I wish we did more of this kind of thing. The downside is you have to be committed to it on a volume basis to reap the rewards, and that's easier to do that when you have a talented roster manned by a top coach. That tends to motivate people. The same player who might flourish in San Fran might come here and just mope around cashing a check.

Just another way in which the benefits of being a top organization are plotted geometrically rather than linearly.

Edit: Oh, and for what it's worth I always figured Martin would get another shot somewhere and wanted to continue playing. Said that plenty of times before the back and forth got tiresome. The "it's all about a lawsuit so he can retire" angle never made sense to me. I understand people were pissed off at Martin but they predictably let it affect their judgement and made him too much of a villain. I'm not going to read this entire thread but I'm going to go ahead and assume it's not full of mea culpa's on this point.
