Jonnu Smith Trade?

Do you not think the new Guards for this season will be any good?
They should be better than last year at least. That is until one of them gets injured and it’s Eichenberg time again.

There is zero depth on the line and we know Ajax will miss at least 4 games, he’s more injury prone that Tua.

Here's my take... I guess we'll see if it comes to pass.

Jonnu outperformed his contract; we all know that. He knows this. The Dolphins know this. His agent knows this.

So now, both sides do the dance. Jonnu says he'd like to remain with the Dolphins (at a higher salary), and the Dolphins begin to do due diligence on what he'd bring in return (before they decide whether to extend Jonnu by 2-3 years).

So far. No harm, no foul. Just business as usual in the NFL. Nobody's feelings are hurt except for a few overly sensitive fans.

I'm sure the Dolphins have a number that they would be happy to pay. Hell, they KNEW this was coming as Smith was only signed through this year.

Now we watch as it plays out. There's no reason to demonize anyone here... At least, not yet.

1st and a 2nd next year and you can have him.

Before everyone blasts me, if Steelers want him that bad, we can make due without a TE until someone on the roster steps up.
Gee, if it were Andrews, Hockenman from the Vikes, La Porta, possibly. But its Smith, who is a very good TE, but not worth a 1 and 2. A third and fifth would be where he is at.

create another hole for a 6th rounder. idiotic.

find a value FA, he plays great and wants to stay here....then we try to trade him
Look at the big picture. He will probably want top 3-5 TE $$, Miami wont want big $$ tied up in a TE, so if Miami can get a 3rd and 5th, and they will be top 12 picks in each round, then grab that,

You will be lucky to get just a 6th rounder for Smith. He had one good year, he's 30, and you have to pay him.

The Eagles were essentially the #1 defense last year and they had the NFL's best rusher who ran for 2,000 yards in 16 games with a nearly 6.0 ypc average.

Jalen Hurts, who almost never threw across the middle of the field (look at the heat maps), passed for 2,900 yards in 15 games with 18 TDs and 5 INTs.

On top of that production, Hurts ran for 600 yards which is certainly good but not "wow" kind of stuff.

Is Jalen Hurts elite? I don't know any serious person who'd say yes although he's certainly a feature of a dominant team not unlike how say, Russell Wilson once was in Seattle.

What happened with Russ after the LoB defense was dismantled kind of speaks for itself. The dynasty collapsed and Russ became a hired gun dancing from Denver to Pittsburgh to the NYG on short stints to solidified the NFL's understanding that he was a limited QB who needed a great team around him capable of carrying him just as much as he lifted it.

Does that erase what he did in Seattle? No, but it does shine light on how over-rated he probably was when he was labeled as one of the elite QBs in the NFL alongside guys like Aaron Rodgers in GB who basically were the offense where they played.

Just as Russ' team beat Peyton Manning's in the Super Bowl, Hurts' beat Mahomes and the Chiefs. Did the better QB win? No, but that's interesting as well.

Ranking QBs is just fun to do so we do it. In reality, you work around who you have and upgrade when you feel you need to. When the Eagles fall apart, most would probably agree that Hurts won't be enough to sustain them into the next dynasty. His short-comings as a full-time passer will become the focus of criticism and his pricetag will make him the enemy in Philadelphia.
Impossible. I’ve heard that you’re automatically an elite QB if you win a SB. I’ve also heard that QB’s play against one another on the field and even all by themselves in some situations.

Do we know what he wants yet?

If he wants top 5 TE money he can pound sand, but if all he is looking for is a bit more, I'd rather keep him.

Didn’t Jonnu say he wants to be here?
He did, he also wants big money which apparently the Phish don't want to give him. So if he wants big money and does not get it, he may not really want to participate at the level McGoober is satisfied with. He already sat out this mini camp apparently

Game 1 Tua threw for 336. Game 4 was Huntley who threw for a whopping 96. I guess it's possible both numbers would have been higher if they targeted Jonnu more?
Smith was in on 43% of the offensive plays in Week 4, which was something like his 5th least plays in a game. So not really abnormal. And like you wrote, Huntley throwing for under 100 yards didn’t help.

In week 1, Smith was in on about 25% of the offensive plays. His least amount all season. Not really surprising considering it was his first game with this offense.

Smith will never get the same number of snaps as a TE who can catch and block.

The offense works better with a true blocking tight end. Smith was really just a third wide receiver here last year that caught a bunch of screen passes.

lol acting like we can’t look at the games he played and compare. Did any of the games Tua played remotely resemble either the 2022 or the 2023 offense?

You are severely overrating him nor has anyone honed in on anything. We shot ourselves in the foot running tweedle Dee and tweedle dum at guard then Austin Jackson going down, it’s that simple. We weren’t running any magical offense that teams figured out, you can’t sit in 2 deep if a team can run and we couldn’t. I’m not sure if they’ll be able to this year, I hope but Jonnu does nothing to help either way. If we can’t, offense will be stagnant again with or without him. He’s not saving anything, he’s not a difference maker. He certainly not helping by telegraphing our plays since he can’t block for ****. You’ve yet to comprehend the value of why a tight end like smythe who could stay in and block or they have the option to run our pass on the field is far more helpful to this offense than jonnu’s role as pretty much a big wide receiver.

You make it sound like in 2022 we ran to set up the pass which is just not true. We just threw the ball majority of the time, despite some success running the ball. But you believe Jonnu hurts this offense more than he contributes. And you believe someone like Smythe is a better fit and more beneficial. We will have to agree to disagree on that one and apparently mcdnaiel and Grier would disagree with you too which is why they let Smythe go and signed Jonnu. A blocking TE is not a weapon. Would it be nice if Jonnu was able better blocker? Sure. It would also be nice if we didn't have a QB who was injury prone, doesnt mean we should get rid of them and try to replace them immediately, beggers cant be choosers. Had we drafted or signed another better TE then I would say yeah maybe Jonnu is replaceable. But obviously that isn't the case.
