Jonnu Smith Trade? | Page 32 | FinHeaven - Miami Dolphins Forums

Jonnu Smith Trade?

Here's my take... I guess we'll see if it comes to pass.

Jonnu outperformed his contract; we all know that. He knows this. The Dolphins know this. His agent knows this.

So now, both sides do the dance. Jonnu says he'd like to remain with the Dolphins (at a higher salary), and the Dolphins begin to do due diligence on what he'd bring in return (before they decide whether to extend Jonnu by 2-3 years).

So far. No harm, no foul. Just business as usual in the NFL. Nobody's feelings are hurt except for a few overly sensitive fans.

I'm sure the Dolphins have a number that they would be happy to pay. Hell, they KNEW this was coming as Smith was only signed through this year.

Now we watch as it plays out. There's no reason to demonize anyone here... At least, not yet.
Get out of here with this common sense shittt😎

Jonnu Smith is gone next year if he's not traded. He's likely refusing to play this year under his current contract, and I dont blame him. Hes over 30 and he's only getting 1 more contract, so he has 1 last chance to cash in. That being said, Miami cant afford to pay him. We do have cap space, but we still need to sign a CB, like Asante Samual or somoene that shsakes free during training camp. I would not sacrafice that oportunity to pay Jonnu Smith.

On a side note, when we had the chance to trade Calais Campbell for a 5th rounder in during hte season, hindsight says to we should have taken that 5th rounder. Same situation applies to Jonnu Smith, except this time we'll pull the trigger.

Let him sit then. He willingly signed a contract, he should man up even if he doesn't get a raise. I think it's likely he gets more unless he has already 'poisoned the well', so to speak. I think the Phish wish his agent had not put out the rumor that Pitt was interested in a trade, which I think is unlikely to happen. Again, McGoober said he wants to coach those players who want to be here. Rosenhaus said Jonnu wants to play here, so shut up and play for the contract you signed then get the big raise your looking for, if not here then go mercenary for yet another team.

Let him sit then.
That an emotional decision we should avoid making. We can make him sit to send some kind of message that wont resonate with him or the team, or we can get value out of it. The NFL is about aquiring talent, not sending messages. The best teams in the NFL are the ones acquirting talent. If we have a choice to limit a players production, as you suggest, or get a draft pick, I'm always choosing the latter.

We have not relieved an offer as far as I know. As I mentioned, it seems like the trade rumor started with an agents phone call to Adam Shefter. My suggestion to let him sit was based on the assumption that Jonnu was being difficult in words or actions so far. I know nothing but a press release and 32 pages of discussion here...

I love Jonnu. He's got exactly the attitude we want on the team.

If anyone deserves a pay bump in recognition of hard work and excellence, it's him. Hopefully there's room in the budget for that.

If there's a dollar to spare in the salary cap, give it to Jonnu.

He earned the pay bump, for sure.

If Jonnu turned out to be one of our most productive players this year what do you think our record would look like week 17? If our 3/4 wr dont pan out, with or without Jonnu, were screwed. I wish you guys would get that through your heads.
In 2023 with our amazing offense who was our #3/4
wide receiver and did that screw us for the season?

In 2024 the major problems with our offense were our QB
who missed almost 1/3 of the season with no capable
back up. The loss of
running game.

In 2023 our rushing offense was amazing
with 27 tds and 2309 rushing yards, while in
2024 we had 12 rushing tds and 1795 rushing yards

We lost 800 passing yards and 8 receiving tds
this past season without Tua's 6 games.

You can't take 1300 yards and 23 tds and expect
to have a dominant offense with or without Smith
This offense scheme was not built to go through
the TE. When this offense is working on all cylinders
Smith will become the 4 th option behind Hill.Waddle
Achane, these 3 will get the majority of targets, as
they should and will. Not sure the Dolphins will
give an over 30 player the money he may desire.

We need Tua to play a full season
We need to find our running game
which will open our passing game. Teams
will have to respect our running game
otherwise we will put up 250+ yards on the ground
and dominate time of possession .

We brought in 2 new guards, and a big running back
to hopefully shore up OL.

Everything goes through Tua, if heathy we have
a chance for at least the playoffs, without Tua
it remains to be seen what will happen.

Where is it reported he's refusing to play?

You make it sound like in 2022 we ran to set up the pass which is just not true. We just threw the ball majority of the time, despite some success running the ball. But you believe Jonnu hurts this offense more than he contributes. And you believe someone like Smythe is a better fit and more beneficial. We will have to agree to disagree on that one and apparently mcdnaiel and Grier would disagree with you too which is why they let Smythe go and signed Jonnu. A blocking TE is not a weapon. Would it be nice if Jonnu was able better blocker? Sure. It would also be nice if we didn't have a QB who was injury prone, doesnt mean we should get rid of them and try to replace them immediately, beggers cant be choosers. Had we drafted or signed another better TE then I would say yeah maybe Jonnu is replaceable. But obviously that isn't the case.

We could run when we needed to in 2022 just didn’t do it enough but it was enough to keep defenses honest which is all you need. Mostert averaged almost 5 ypc and Wilson averaged 4.7 ypc. Most importantly we didn’t get hit for losses on 28% of carries like this year.

Also not sure acting like McDaniel and Grier agree with you is the flex you think it is. Was obviously a mistake and the offense regressed.

He is replaceable since he’s purely a receiver. NWI and Malik are more than capable of handling his load.

You think the offense regressed because we lost Durham Smythe. You are in the minority on that one, Bud lol. And if you think Jonnu is more replaceable than smythe then that is even more laughable. And stop acting like we are a run first offense, since mcdaniel has been here its clear he has built a finesse offense.
