Just got back from Philly, and I'm forced to remove the homer glasses.

Well, give Feeley a chance and the reigns of the team for a full season with decent personell all around on Defense and Offense, especially an O-line and we may have the last laugh!

I hope you're right, but... :shakeno:

Was in Philly/Jersey shore for past 2 weeks. Needless to say, it is all about the Eagles up there. Had to watch 2 pre-season games just to see some football. I had no computer access and got zero Dolphins info while there. But I had a chance to be an impartial observer of a successful franchise, and it forced me to realize we have a long way to go.

My observations:

-Eagles have the opposite strengths and weaknesses on offense. Besides TO, they have no decent receivers. Westbrook is not a stunning RB, although a good receiving back. But they have an awesome O-line and a great starting QB.

-Eagles fans laugh at us about the Feeley trade. No really, one laughed right in my face and asked if we wanted to give a 3rd round pick for their backup punter.

-Eagles fans may be obnoxious, but they are loyal and knowledgeable. They hold the players, coaches and owners accountable.

-McNabb is not a great QB from a passing standpoint. A surprisingly large percentage of his passes are low or behind his targets; his receivers make tough catches that make him look good. But he has what we're lacking. Poise, confidence, and the ability to keep a play alive and make something positive happen, but not out of desperation. His teammates know that and so they work hard for him until the whistle blows.

-Defensively, they are stronger and deeper than us. We like to brag about JT and Zach, but Kearse and Trotter do OK also, plus they've got a lot more talent surrounding them than Zach and JT. They were deep enough at D-line to basically cut Simon.

-Which brings me to the most important observation: they're front office and administration are top-notch. They know how to build and run a team. They handled the TO thing perfectly, and now he's back in camp, quiet and catching TD's. They let Corey Simon go, but he has stated he will always love the Eagles and Andy Reid personally. They treat their fans well and with respect.

So my conclusions:

-We're moving in the right direction, but we've got a lot further to go than any of us would like to admit. Best and most important thing we did was can the old regime and hire Saban. I think Saban can get us there, just not this year. After years of bozos, I think we finally have a front office that can be on par with the Eagles.

-We can argue all we want about Gus vs AJ, but we're not going anywhere with either of theses stiffs and Saban knows it.

-O-line will take at least a year or two to develop, but could actually become a strength long term. They are young and have a great line coach.

-I fear we've wasted the JT and Zach years; this defense has aged before our eyes and the youth movement has already started (Poole, Crowder, Daniels, etc). I expect to lose Zach and Jt within the next 2 years.

- Overall, big picture is good, but this year will be a bit frustrating as we won't see the results we want fast enough to suit the fickle South Florida fan base.

Anyway, just wanted to report after stepping out of our backyard and taking off my aqua and teal shades!

Its tough to take off those rose colored glasses but I agree with you that we are quite a ways away before we can compare ourselves to the Eagle org. whose front office is top notch.

BTW I wanted to point out an apparent contradiction How can they have "no decent receivers besides TO" and then say .; "his receivers make tough catches that make him look good.".Our receivers dont make any of our QBs look good so the Eagle receivers cant be that bad.;)

Great post....I agree, especially with the part on us having a long way to go before we can contend for anything. It still surprises me that alot of people on this site think that we are a 10-6 or 11-5 team and we will soon be in the playoffs. This team has some missing pieces, but it's still fun watching Saban put it all together.

Good observations but not necassarily the vision of reality that everyone see's...

I watched an interview on NFL Total Access last night of Kevin Carter who was asked directly,"Comparing the rebuilding process that you went through in St. Louis to the situation here with the Dolphins what do you see?" Carter said,"From day one Dick Vermeil came in and said that it would take three years to go to become champions, but here in Miami we have a lot of the pieces already to even make a run THIS YEAR."

I take that to heart coming from a great player that is very intelligent that I've always respected... I wanted Miami to sign him when St. Louis let him go and Daryl Gardner started having back problems...

I would call it ****eyed optimism. I don't think anyone on this site believes our second stringers are better than everyone elses. However, I believe the "optimism" comes from the names we have for starters. With the exception of QB, have you honestly seen this much YOUNG talent at the skill positions on a Dolphins team in recent decades?

I truly believe our STARTERS are capable of a 9 - 7 or 10 - 6 season. Remember how many close games we were in last year?

HOWEVER, what separates the good teams from the great teams is DEPTH. And that's where the front office comes into play. Anyone can put free agent "names" on the field. But, not just anyone can draft. And I think that's the true underlying debate on this site.

While many fans see the "names" on the field, they cannot fathom why other fellow fans say we are "rebuilding". More involved fans realize we are one injury (or retirement) away from tailspinning into last year. And while it is true of many teams, the "elite" teams tend to not skip a beat when major injuries occur. I.E. Philly kept winning even when McNabb went down for an extended period.

I think the starters are capable of delivering an inspiring season for us. But, the bigger issue of depth is what needs addressing for the Dolphins to return to SUSTAINED glory. And that's the point most people miss.

I think you are totally wrong and I think those obnoxious a holes have gotten to your head. First off, Kevin Carter says wqe are alot further along than the ST louis Rams were when he started there. Secondly, Our biggest prob was coaching last year, not talent like all these weasels out there think. Just go down the line, first off, we have two stud RB's that will punish teams in the 4th quarter. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. Randy Mcmicheal is one of the better TE's in football. CC and co. can get the job done and is a deeper bunch than Philly by far. Our defense is completely revamped and teams have no clue as to what is going to hit them.

Fact is, we are lot better than 4-12 by miles and miles. The porblem is, that no one will believe it till it gets executed and is seen.

McNabb... poised and confident? LOL!

I really don't have time for this, so I'll be quick and to the point.

You said this of McNabb:

"Poise, confidence, and the ability to keep a play alive and make something positive happen, but not out of desperation. His teammates know that and so they work hard for him until the whistle blows."

Yeah, just like the poise and ESPECIALLY the confidence he showed in the Super Bowl. Pa-leeeeaze! Just stop it. I'm still wondering how long it's going to take for people to get off the McNabb bandwagon. He's a very nice guy and a very good athlete. Kindly leave it at that. I'm really tired of people making this guy out to be something he's not. Seriously, some people actually take bets on how many passes he'll throw at his receivers' FEET in a given game.

Man's been in the NFL for how long and he's still got a problem with this?!?

As for the Miami Dolphins...

Man, seriously, people need to just relax and enjoy the changes. Hell, we may even have to take a step backwards to take two forwards, i.e. we could even regress (record-wise) to 3-13 or 2-14.

At least we're playing to win, people! No more Wanny-ball. Try to remember that. Try to remember just how effin boring it was to watch so much talent go to waste running it up the middle on 1st, up the middle on 2nd and... oh, let me guess... up the middle on 3rd. Jesus! WAKE UP!

Some people could really help themselves by focusing on all what Miami has going for it this year... and beyond. Because last year, and for years before that, it was impossible to escape the fact that we DID HAVE enough talent to go far into the playoffs but NEVER would... because our head coach was a total moron (and a coward) and our GM was a clueless over-achiever. Finally, look at the ENTIRE coaching staff for this year and compare it to last year. Hell, for that matter, compare it to half the other teams in the NFL.

Damn, you people really need to lighten up... 4-12, 6-10, 9-7, 11-5... WHATEVER! Rose-colored glasses!?!

Relax, and just watch the game. And try to be grateful... for what we do have going for us this year. It's going to be fun no matter what.

GO 'PHINS!

I tend to agree with what Bill Parcells saying..."You're only as good as your record".

I know many bring up the fact that Miami lost a lot of close games...but what you don't seem to realize is that losing teams lose close games too.

With the Eagles as my "2nd" team, behind the Fins of course, I have to concur on several things you said...however, if you or they think that the TO saga is over, they have another thing coming...This "standoff" between TO and McNabb will bite them in the azz beyond the shadow of a doubt. This thing is just in a lull, not resolved. Soon as he lights the league up again (after the first 4 games), he'll start the crap back up...

I do agree that the FO and organization, in general, are top-notch. They have a plan in place and execute it continually...Isn't it funny they can dump players that are pretty good (Simon, Douglass, Trotter) and still keep the winning ways...and they never have cap problems...In fact, they are usually well under the cap...I will say that if they win the SB this year, and are successful again next year, (not necessarily win it, but be close) then they will start to have the issues like most successful teams do (like the Pats)...losing ***'t coaches, losing players to FA, etc...

We just have to wait and see if our organization will get BACK to where it once was...being respected and under control of the team. We lost that, beginning with JJ and then the Wanny saga. Saban is building a foundation right now and it'll take some time, but we'll be where we should be...soon.

I have a cousin near there. Cinamincin (spell?) NJ. Short drive to downtown Phili

nice to see a thread that has logical, non homer posts in it. I am so sick of reading these idiotic "Gus for pro bowl" or "feeley should start and here's why..". It makes you wonder if anyone on here knows football, and then a thread like this gets posted which makes complete sense.

All summer long we had to read morons posting about how great Feeley would be.Well, they are finaly silenced, and next year we will have a real starting QB who can take us places.
