well, for the 2nd year in a row, flying down to Miami for the home opener (in this case the actual opener), and once again i leave with a loss. i thought maybe im bad luck, but the fact that they went 1-7 last year at home and now this, its prob not me.

im not gonna go into depth and analyze everything but just a few things.

firstly, our offense. could not have started better on the opening drive. i truly thought that, maybe just maybe, with considering how good our d was supposed to be, and how good our offense looked on that opening drive, just maybe we could have had a good overall night start to finish and would all go home happy. apparently that was not the case.

after the first series, the offense for the most part disappeared the rest of the first half, and people may criticize me for saying it, but for the rest of the game. we did not see that same offense like the first drive again.

our second touchdown was obviously set up by the odrick pick, and henne did a good job getting us into the end zone. although we accumulated tons of yardage, many of those were when the game was out of hand, as i heard on ESPN radio Boston today, mike reiss said 211 of our yards were when the game was a 2 touchdown game late in the 4th.

chad henne did play pretty well though, and what i liked most about him this game was that unlike last year, he was actually moving around in the pocket, and also ran for a good amount of yards and looked like a guy who was willing to take chances unlike last year.

the one thing that concerns me though is our inability to punch it in from short distance. when we were down 21 -14 and had a chance to tie the game from the 2 yd line 1st and goal, i knew when we had to settle for a field goal, the game was over, as im sure most fans thought inside. we just cant afford to do that vs teams like the pats, especially on a night like last night when they couldn't be stopped. overall, this offense has the potential to be pretty solid, but they must get touchdowns when they are that close, not field goals.

finally, the defense. well i don't know if their is much to say about this unit last night. the unit we have been talking about since the off season, how they are going to be one of the elite units in the NFL. well, last night they looked like the worst unit in the NFL.

people can say all they want, o its just one game, Davis, smith, and many of our players were cramping up causing them to miss playing time and have guys like Nolan Carroll have to come in etc, and while all that is true, it is not an excuse. their is zero excuses to give up that many touchdowns and that many yds, especially for a defense that has talked about becoming elite. i know tom Brady is legendary, but its still not excuse. it was embarrassing.

this week , this unit will be tested again. although Matt schaub is far from Tom Brady, as are most qbs, he still is pretty good, and they got the best wr in the league, coupled with a pretty good tight end in Daniels, with a good run game assuming foster plays, our defense will have its hands full. its time to step up your game and show why we should think you will be elite this year.

one game, OK, it shouldn't happen but **** happens. 2 games, it would be very very worrisome and we would be in serious danger. a very bad loss last night as it was a division game, and although its not impossible and anything can happen, judging by our track record in foxboro in December, and the pats track record in December their, many things would have to fall into place for us to avoid being swept by the pats. lets hope we can right the ship, and when we play the pats on Christmas eve, we are on our way to the playoffs and not a top 10 draft pick.

Miami's defense will be challenged to find personel to cover TE's, other teams will exploit this weakness. We also have a hard time covering quick slot receivers.

Miami's offense needs to find a running game to make us multidimensional. We need to be more efficient in the red zone.

We need a coaching staff that can out game plan the other team to compensate for some lack of talent.

If you know football you should know to never go by the opening drive. First drives are scripted first of all. Second of all , defenses adjust afterwards when they see the blocking schemes , get the feel for the offense , etc etc. Notice there weren't any wide open holes to run through after the first drive as the Pats adjusted their defense accordingly. The dolphins offense got off the field quickly on the following 3 or 4 drives.

and this is common in the NFL after an impressive first drive. Hell, the dolphins last year had some very nice opening drives just to stall immediately afterwards, and sometimes for the rest of the game.. remember the Baltimore game after a very impressive opening drive, and many others like the Minnesota game where it was a beautiful opening drive just to look quite poor offensively for the rest of the game.

The Dolphins deferred the opening kickoff all season last year, which meant they got the ball to open the 2nd half most of the time. Well the Dolphins were horrible on drives to start the 3rd quarter last year because defenses adjusted to what they did in the 1st half ~ even with all those impressive first drives in the 1st quarter.

Impressive Opening drives are fools gold alot of the time (especially for this Miami team). In fact, if you look at last night's game thread here after the first drive, I posted saying that it was only the first drive and the Pats will adjust and to not get too hyped up just yet.. to see if the offensive success continues on following drives. And look what happened, they totally sputtered on following drives and it hurt our defense as they could not get any rest with New England's no-huddle game plan

ya i hear ya. i just thought that after our first drive, maybe the optimisim some of us had about the game, and the season would possibly be a reality. it was just disappointing to see how they can perform so flawlessly on the opening drive ( that's not disappointing thing) and then their despite piling up all of those yards did not like as good the rest of the game. you are right, i should not have judged anything by the first drive as many teams do go on to have many great drives to begin and then go on to get blown out, like we have in the past also, i was just having some optimism after and thought maybe, just maybe it would be the signs of something.

Yeah but we rarely even have a good opening drive....... By that mentality I would say that maybe our scripting is at least better.:idk:

I could be way off here but I thought we were hurt for not passing as much do to the fear that our defense would wear out after how easily Brady went down the field on the opening drive. I felt they were trying to run to sustain some offense for awhile there when they should have just kept attacking. I could be wrong though.

ive been blasting these guys all day. but i dont think we will play anybody else that can exploit us the way new england did the rest of the year. they just match up well against our defense. most tight ends arent going to be too athletic for burnett. and either will allen or sean smith will be able to cover the tight ends we want to put a db on. nobody has two guys like the patriots. our problems vs the pats arent going away this year, and we were so foolish not to match up in personal in the offseason, but we wont be exposed like that again as long as will allen stays healthy. we lose a corner for the year tho, and its gonna get ugly. we have zero depth there.

did you have fun at least?
lol, i was miserable. the crowd was alright i guess, but the game just spiraled out control, and once we settled for a field goal when we had 1st and goal at 2, i knew by then the game was over due to the fact that we couldn't stop the pats.

so, i cant really say i had that much fun witnessing that dilemma.

For the defense, I don't see this as just "one bad game". I just don't think that our secondary was tested all that much in the games where they supposedly improved dramatically. If we had a dominant defensive effort, it was because of the defensive front having a field day. Oh, and Jason Allen, who despite his mistakes was still the only guy in our secondary capable of picking the ball off, which pretty much single-handedly won our first two games.

When this secondary actually was tested, it resulted in a 38-7 drubbing at the hands of mostly Patriot backups.
