I have a question for anyone who can answer.....is Justin Smiley strictly a RG or can he play either Guard position? the reason i ask is if he can play either Guard position, then perhaps he can be moved to the LG position to play in between Long and Satele to help those 2 with his experience and we can either draft someone to play RG or try Mormino at the RG position and see what happens.

He can play either guard position but he has historically seen greater success at RG in both San Francisco and while at Alabama. He's a strong run blocker and paired with Vernon Carey who is also a strong run blocker on the right side of the line they should open up a lot of holes. I surely hope that Mormino wont be starting next year. He has no place on this line. I'm so psyched that for once I can say Miami has a good, strong, and most importantly young O-Line. Long, Satele, Smiley and Carey. Now to find a LG to plug in.

Even though Samson played well at center he ONLY played 3 games at center in college. His natural position was left guard.

We could draft a top center and slide Satele over to left guard

Then you would have
Long-Satele-top rated center-Smiley-Carey

I'm not saying this is the way to go but it is an alternative

alright,i understand,i was just thinking that Smiley could be moved to LG to help Long and Satele develop with his experience if our coaches went in that direction, and we could draft someone to play RG that Carey could help develop&grow with his experience. just a thought on my part.

On the other possibility hand, if we draft another OT at 2a (or maybe 2b) we could feature:

LT – Long
LG – Carey
C – Satele
RG – Smiley
RT – Cherilus or Collins or Nicks (all three big boys with plenty of chops for RT)

The combo of Long and Carey on the left side would be a pretty impressive steamroller on the running game and put our two best athletes together with Samson in the middle. Smiley matched with another power guy and you’ve got (suddenly) perhaps the BEST young OL in the league!

If there’s a huge stud RT at 2a (or certainly 2b) I’d really like us to go in this direction. Even if we don’t move Carey to G, we need more depth at OT --- which gives us a lot of versatility across the front as well.

IMHO the powers that be won't go this way. Satele is slated at Center indefinitely unless poor play or injury occurs. He showed last year he can hold it down and he has a good learning curve.

yes,i agree,Satele showed last year he can hold the Center position down, and if i recall correctly, alot of Ronnies runs went right up his back in the middle.

I don't understand why people are so quick to move Carey to guard to fit in some rookie that has never played in the NFL at RT. Carey is a better T than anyone we will get at 2a or 2b so don't keep moving him, draft someone who can play guard and leave Carey at T. Carey gets so little respect on this board.

Also, as far as drafting a center, I think this draft class is light on centers right ? So draft a guard and leave Satele where he is. Mormino can help either position provided he can stay healthy, which is doubtful.

It has NOTHING to do with respect dude, it has to do with employing your talent to maximum advantage. This draft is LOADED with OT talent, and believe it or not, there are many who feel Carey's BEST position is at G. That doesn't mean he's not a solid T, but he could be ELITE as a G matched with someone like Long and Samson.

This is about opportunities, and if we can get another 1st round grade OT at 2a then I'd love to see us load up on the big guys. One way or another, Sparano will find the best combination.

The meanest guy should be our Center. That's Samson Satele.

I agree that it would be best for Jake to pair up with a veteran at the LG spot, but Jake is likely to be better than whatever veteran we can get. And in light of what Vernon and LJ did two years ago when paired on the right side, I am adamant about seeing Smiley and Big Vern plow the field for Ronnie.

I'd like to see Chilo Rachal become a Dolphin in round 4.

Justin Smiley's situation in SF was similar to Vernon Carey's here in Miami. Smiley started 9 games at RG as a rookie before starting all 16 games at LG the following season. In 2006 when Larry Allen was signed, Smiley moved backed to RG where he played until injuring his shoulder.
