1. Stop the run first. Whether it's through run blitzes into their preferred gaps or sneaking Jones up to toward the line of scrimmage, Coyle and the defense must figure out how to stop the Panther's rushing attack. What is usually a strength for our defense has been a weakness the last 3 weeks. The defense needs to go back to basics on run leverage, taking proper angles to the ball carrier, and wrapping up.
2. Give Newton new looks from the secondary. Newton has gotten better, but you can see that his thought process is still slow when he has to look away from his primary read. Disguise the coverage constantly and force him to take an extra second in the pocket. When he has to think, his game breaks down. Force him to be a pocket passer. Bringing us to the next point...
3. Keep Newton in the pocket. Newton is dangerous when the lanes breakdown. He has innate ability to escape and make a play out of nothing. The defense must be disciplined in its rush, and stay in their individual lanes. It might even require more of a containment style pass rush than one designed to sack the QB. Coyle, forget all the ridiculous stunts up front and keep the line in their individual lanes.
4. Stay patient on offense. Rivera's defenses are designed to make an offense slowly chew up yardage. The defense is designed to minimize mistakes and big plays. Tannehill must be willing to take what they give him. If it's 100 check downs, he better complete 100 check downs. Kuechly and Davis are good coverage LB, and their going to try to take the middle of the field away from Tannehill. Tannehill prefers the middle (look at the targets to Clay, Matthews, and Gibson). He'll have to take the short stuff to the outside when it is there.
Those are the keys as I see it. One more thing, if someone gives up a long TD catch or return to the Ginn Family, I will freak out.
