Kiper's End of Season Evaluation of the Dolphins 2011 Rookie Class

especially considering you were one of the most vocal against the draft in the spring. DT had those hammy issues and really it's hard to overcome if you did what we did to him (play him a week or 2 then sit him a week) we should have let him rest his hammy until he was fully ready.

Gates, I just remember listening to Omar on ESPN radio during the summer saying Gates has a lot of speed, but he needs to learn how to run in pads (saying he ran into the practice wall several times cause he can't control himself)

my real gripe with the draft was interior oline at pick #15...if you're gonna take one that high he better be awesome...well pouncey was awesome...just a terrific move athlete...he'd pull around the edge sometimes and i swear i'd think to myself he looks like a te he's so smooth and he's 300 lbs...tough...would get nicked up come out for a snap or two and go right back in...but guys that size that athletic are rare...great feet...heck to me he's a long term better pro than his brother...much more athletic...to me he raises the grade significantly

i like jimmy wilsons upside...physical player ball skills...i'm a fan...might have a starting cb there at some point

gates...what i saw in the preseason he got off the los pretty well...we just decided i think to go the veteran route wr wise in games a lot...hartline is much more polished...i just think they're bringing gates along slowly but i expect him to help us down the field in 2012

That's your opinion and that's OK.

I respect hooshoops draft opinion and a host of others more than Kiper's.
What's my opinion? That his IQ is higher than a potatoe? I'm fairly certian thats a fact. Or that he's had a long, lucrative career? Also, fact.

The thing with Daniel Thomas, outside of the health issues, is that he is a zone style runner that was miscast in a largely power running style of offense.

why? not bashing hoops, just want to know why you respect an armchair draft fan over a guy who has devoted over 30 years to the nfl draft, has access to tape and information we could only dream of as well as massive inside access.

non of us have the recources he has. he spends almost every waking hour between drafts watching tapes, talking with pro scouts, coaches, plyers, gm's, etc....... and attends many practices and games.

hey, i put my draft knowledge up against anyone, but, i do mine with the limited recources every other arm chair draftnic has, kiper has the universe as far as draft stuff goes.

its all just an opinion. you get some right, some wrong. but kiper deserves much, much more respect for his draft "prowess" because of his recources and time he puts in. much more than ANY of us.

so, again, why?

thomas had hammy issues during the draft process...so thats followed him to the pro game...i agree with kb he's more of a one cut zone back...but he can make those jump cuts that adrian foster is so famous for and for his size d thomas has terrific feet

why? not bashing, just want to know why.

OK here is my beef with Kiper. I have constantly called him a potato on this board and members would like to know why so here it is:

I feel he is incredibly shortsighted and too black and white to be analytical in his opinion. Kiper in his position should think outside the box and offer more than just his yeah/neah on players given their respective position on the Draft board. For example one of the glaring Miami/Kiper moments came with the drafting of Misi, he hated that pick, said it was a D/F pick and that Miami would be sorry to have wasted such a high pick on the player. As soon as he learned that Miami had intentions of playing Misi at OLB instead of DE he immediately backtracked and upgraded his grade to reflect the pick verse position, Misi is no A pick but he certainly isn't a D/F either.

If a bunch of peckerwoods on a message board are able to see upside to a position switch, the ESPN guru that has years of experience should have seen it coming. There are more from the past but I really don't feel like getting into them. The draft grade he gave to Miami (B-/B) is spot on, don't get me wrong but it takes more than a grade to impress me when it comes to a guru, you'd better offer some damn good insight into the why/why not and at times I just feel that Kiper is thin in his reasoning. Phil Simms does the same thing when he calls games, he talks you in circles to hid the ineptness of his research.

If Kiper wasn't such a self righteous pompus jackarse he would get more respect for the 50% accuracy of his prognostications..

i think kipers ok...i don't think he's an idiot at all...but the guy that i think is the best is mike mayock...other than his yearly go against the grain earl thomas over eric berry or mccoy over suh which you have to see through

mayocks the guy imo

Very good points. The pundits need to understand the needs to the team selecting the player and how his skills translate to their system before grading them..

I started going south on Mel when his head exploded and got real indignant we didn't draft Brady Quinn. Not that we drafted Teddy Ginn, which was a big mistake, but that we were dumb enough to need a QB and pass up his his beloved overhyped product of the ND PR machine and Jeff Smardjia (sp?). We made him look bad; at this point his ego exceeds his qualitative evaluations. He does get a lot of credit for pioneering an industry that never existed.. but on the other hand, how many quad core Commodore Computers are available these days?

This is another shinning Miami/Kiper moment in time.

I think the grade for me is gonna come down to the later round picks. Did Ireland find us a quality starter or two from Gates, Clay and/or Wilson. Clay has flashed and Wilson has the tools. Too early to tell. Taking a center, even one as good as Pouncey, at #15 is the safe pick and does not impress me. Find me a good center in round three and I will be impressed.

As for trading up and taking Thomas in the second, with Mallett on the board and the Fins needing a QB....stupid pick IMO. Mallett may or may not pan out but it was worth the shot. A RB in the NFL is becoming worthless. Where are the Vikings picking again this year. Or how about Jags with the rushing leader MJD.
