La Canfora: Ochocinco wants to join Dolphins/Will work out this week for Miami

Looks like we are bringing him in!

Looks like this might actually happen. I understand the idea that they should go with the young guys, but who really would Ochocinco being take a job from? Odds are the young guys like Cunningham, Matthews, Fuller and Moye could be stashed on the practice squad this year. Also if Wallace or Moore can't beat out a 34 year old Ochocinco than they are probably never going to catch on and become an impact player here.

Signing Ochocinco doesn't mean he is going to be on the opening day roster, just that he is going to be one of the 90 players coming to camp. Remember they increased the training camp roster this offseason from 80 to 90, so there are going to be 10 extra players anyway. Why not have one of them be Ochocinco?

Why the hate for Naanee???? He is not a locker room cancer, did not get arrested in the offseason, and he is not running his mouth (like his agent)... If he is outperforming the others, why can't we give him a chance...

Because he's a scrub football player in every sense of the word? And Ochocinco is no good anymore either. Pass.

He can't play anymore. He is washed up. And he was too stupid to learn the Pats offense (Google it, I ain't making that up). IF Miami gives him a contract its for an HBO storyline to make the reality show more interesting. Not for football reasons.

IF they give him a deal the talk of the franchsie getting back to football and stopping with the side show circus, orange carpet, celebrity owners lip service they are giving is a total lie and this organization is clueless and hopeless!

Bit of an over exaggeration don't you think?

Of course he wants to join us. He has a perfect chance to get some air time on Hard Knocks.

Dude, just relax with the hyperbole.

Is Chad Ochocinco going to be a Dolphin?

We really need another thread on this HUGE news. His veteran min salary is only $940,000 per season. Do not listen to these "fancy" expects with their "book learning", use of "logic" and "football knowledge". At only $1 million a season, Chad Ochocinco is a steal. Sure, chances are that the will not help the Dolphins as a team and he will drain away time and money best spent else where. However, it might give HBO higher ratings with this season's Hard Knocks. And that is what is important!

Sure, he has lost a step or two and has a problem understanding a playbook. But really, how smart do you have to be to play for the Dolphins? I mean OK, a WR in a WCO offense like most offense is supposed to be able to make a change in his routes in relation to the defense and has to make the same read as the QB but I'm sure we can dumb it down to fit Chad's...uh...skills.

After all, what is a million dollars between home boys.

  • [h=4]With his best days behind him, Ochocinco will have trouble finding work[/h] I don't think Ochocinco will quickly land with a new team. There are several reasons why, but here are the main three:

    1) Very few teams are interested in distractions and sideshows. Despite being on his best behavior for Bill Belichick, there is still a concern that he will turn back to his attention-craving persona of the past.

    2) He has lost his explosiveness. That is the trait that made him so dangerous during his productive years in Cincinnati. He was never a technician as a route runner.

    3) It wasn't a secret that Ochocinco struggled with the playbook in New England. That is going to turn off a lot of teams that are looking for a veteran to work with their younger receivers.

  • [h=4]Ochocinco's NFL days could very well be over[/h] I would not be surprised if it was over. Ochocinco's physical skills have diminished, and he is not a disciplined enough route runner to overcome this decline. Also, when you sign a veteran receiver at the end of his career, you want him to be a leader. Chad is not a leader. He is not a starter and can't help on special teams.

I think this is it for Ochocinco. I would not sign him.

Chad Ochocinco is out, while Jabar Gaffney, Donte Stallworth, Deion Branch remain as potential Tom Brady targets. [Gaffney, Stallworth and Branch are all] 30-something, but they all have Brady's trust, get to the places they're supposed to be, and don't have to be told where to go, which was still happening during this season's OTA workouts for Ochocinco. On at least one occasion, Branch still had to point him to the right spot. Even newcomer Brandon Lloyd seems to be in more sync with Brady than Ochocinco ever was. ... He didn't have the kind of football intelligence you need to adjust to all that goes on with the Patriots offense, then read the defense, and be where Brady expects you to be. He just never got it.

http://nfl.si.com/2012/06/07/chad-ochocinco-trade-a-rare-misfire-by-bill-belichick/?sct=nfl_bf3_a4

Belichick’s traded a pair of picks (2012 fifth-rounder, 2013 sixth-rounder) to Cincinnati for Ochocinco. The Bengals turned that 166th pick this year into Cal wide receiver Marvin Jones, who is in the mix to win a starting spot opposite A.J. Green.

Thursday, The Patriots released Ochocinco. — New England cut the mercurial wide receiver after reportedly trying (and failing) to trade him.

Ochocinco agreed to reduce his base salary for this upcoming season from $3 million to $1 million, but even that move couldn’t save his roster spot. The 34-year-old Ochocinco struggled throughout the 2011 season trying to grasp New England’s high-flying offense and, even into recent minicamps, reports told of him screwing up even the most basic premises of the playbook.

Chad Ochocinco, cut by the New England Patriots on Thursday, will work out for the Miami Dolphins this coming week, according to a report by Jason
La Canfora of CBSSports.com, who cited an unnamed source.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus, reached by ProFootballTalk.com, would not confirm or deny the report.

Earlier, La Canfora reported that Ochocinco, 34, has interest in playing for the Dolphins, who need help at wide receiver after trading Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears. Ochocinco is a native of Miami.

If the Dolphins sign Ochocinco, HBO would be thrilled. The Dolphins will appear on “Hard Knocks” during training camp, and Ochocinco would raise interest considerably in a have-not team that lacks star power.

No other team is known to have interest in Ochocinco at this time, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

I for one kinda like the idea of having "no-name" WR's at least for this season. Give the young guys that we currently have on the roster a chance to flourish in an open competition. You never know who might break away from the pack and make a name for themselves. Of course at the moment our receiving corp looks pretty average, but that doesn't mean it'll be the case the whole season, things can change very quickly, and by next year we will have a better understanding of what those guys can do. But as of now, we have to give Gates, Moore, Wallace, and all the rookies a chance to step up and grab a spot, because going into next year we have to know what we have in these players so that we can effectively move on to more impactful players at the position if they simply can't cut it.

So no, to Ocho!

At first I was meh "no" on the idea, now I'm meh "yes" on it. Like has been said, give him a one year veteran's minimum and if he doesn't produce, bye bye! At 33-34, whatever he is, he might have another year or two left in him...we can hope. :idk:

It has been reported consistently that he has trouble learning offenses and that his biggest problem in NE was his inability to learn the offense. I guess what it really comes down to is whether or not he will be a team player. Apparently, he was not a cancer at all in New England, and if he can bring that same kind of attitude here I'd definitely like to see him get a tryout.
