Ireland has made it pretty clear that he will not be able to keep both. Philbin has said that we will have a hybrid defense 3-4/4-3 like we did with Nolan. So if you have to choose one, who do you want to keep, Langford or Soliai?

Its a tough one for me cause I really like Langford, but guys like Soliai dont come around often and we have 4 other DEs. But he will want a contract similar to Wilfork, which was a 5 yearm, $40 million with $25 million of that guaranteed and a $18 Million signing bonus.

When did Ireland say he cant keep both? When did Philbin say we will have a hybrid defense? Didnt he just hire a coordinator today?

As the poll currently shows, this is an EASY decision.

Hell, even if we switch to a 4-3, you don't let the big Somoan go.
He does so many things freeing up other guys around him, and he is FINALLY really starting to come into his own. He finally understands the nose-tackle position (It takes all the good ones a handful of years as no College team runs a true 3-4, it is even taking Ngata in Baltimore a handful of years).

Without Soliai, our defense instantly takes a huge step backwards. We are stout against the run, and it's no mistake. Now we just need another pass rusher on the edge and more consistent play in the backfield, and lets start looking at the playoffs baby!!!!

Langford is much more replaceable than Soliai. I feel like Langford might be one of those guys who ends up signing a short term deal due to lack of demand out in the league.

I honestly see our Defensive line turning into what the Gints have. Even when their second stringers come in, its no let down, which IMHO, is a huge reason for their success, both this year, and last time they won the SB (That and the fact that, regardless of what HACK says Eli is no good, he is a top 5 QB in the NFL).

I'm not sure we don't sign both of them, but I also see Langford possibly turning into more of a backup role and Odrick taking more snaps.

ironically, one of those Giants' DT is a former 3-4 DE. Chris Canty.

we might not keep either of them...I do agree that Paul is the one I'd keep but he'd also cost a whole lot more.

Ozzy rules!!

As much as i love Langford ... I'm going to say it's Soliai as the guy you keep ... there are other DE's already on the roster that can take Langford"s place!!! with about 15 million in cap space going into F/A; it isn't out of the question you can keep both ... Langford has done so much from his DE spot in terms of his stout play at the POA, he'd be sorely missed ... But Nose Tackles are so hard to find, that is why I think Soliai gets the edge!!!

We do have Randy Starks, who can serve as a NT in the 3-4 as well as a DT in the 4-3 . . . but if I could only choose one guy, give me Soliai and I can run Starks and Odrick at DE.

Soliai, no contest.

Even if we move to a Hybrid, Soliai as a 1 Technique in a 4 man front is scary.

With the cap increasing quite a bit next year, resigning Soliai shouldn't be too difficult of a task.

I say we keep Langford. Do you realize how much cap space we will have to give away to keep Soliai? I want Manning+Wayne, 1st round pass rusher, 2nd/3rd tight end.

Yeah between $8-9 million a year.

Cap will increase quite a bit going into next year, so back loading Soliai's contract won't be an issue.
