Late Saturday Practice Report

St. Clair entered the draft as a center also. The top rated center at that and then somewhere down the line St. Louis turns him into a RT. I think St. Clair who I think is listed between 310-325 LBs could make the switch. And if Hadnot made the switch to C I think Wade Smith or Damion Cook, St. Clair, or even McIntosh could play RG.

I know one thing we have depth like never before on our o-line AND our d-line.

GO PHINZ!!

I'm not sure why St.Claire hasn't been tried at center any. He's probably fairly intelligent; UVa has pretty high scholastic standards, ala Duke, and I think he was pretty well regarded coming out. I guess there is just something NFL coaches don't see in him.

FinFan57... Thanks for the clear, unbiased, positive report. It was a pleasure to read. It seemed to be an honest view from a fan that cares about the phins going in a positive direction for once.

Alan Says Yo - Very good question. Basically, when the WR's made the catches they did it with an outstanding effort. Chambers, for instance, was blanketed, but made a circus-style one-handed catch that no DB in the world could stop. Bottom line, is no one seemed lost, out of place, or looked bad. When the receivers made catches, they worked very hard to earn them.

Great job 57. Word is in that this team is very disaplined already. I think guys like Booker, Seau, Boston are guys who are taking it easy cus they are veterans. What a beatiful thing it would be to see no false starts and jumping offsides and all that crap that just halts progression. I see that with Saban. That use to be a shula staple.

Of the guys who have been held out Vonnie Holliday and Eddie Moore ran well and looked great. Both look like they are ready to come back, which makes our defense even stronger. Chester, on the other hand, won't be in shape for a long time. He is very overweight.

I'm excited about our defense, just wish Will Poole wasn't injured. We definetely need more depth at corner, but Travis and Sam will be great starters for us.

I think Poole could be back come midseason.

Thanks for the report. But, I too am wondering how everyone looked good? I can see that WR's made good catches in coverage as you explain. Then again, if they can't get separation from the DB's, then they aren't doing such a great job. Or, if the DB's are not making plays to stop completions - then their coverage is for naught. But, if the WR's ARE getting separation from the starting DB's, then they are doing a good job. And, how could Carey handle JT well, but then JT looked outstanding?

Ultimately, it's how they play against each other. And, if one position (DL) looks great, then the opposite (OL) can't. Either way, both offense and defense can't be looking great when playing each other. No offense intended, and I appreciate your report and optimism.

For those guys who think my report was too positive and I was describing every player as playing "good", I think you misread my report. I used words such as, "solid" and "reliable" as well as good. I described only a few players as great. The point is, as I said, we're moving in a positive direction and we have a lot of good young players that will improve during the year and are looking decent in camp. I still think we are around 8-8 or 9-7 this year because of our tough schedule. That is hardly overly positive.....I think realistic is more accurate.

Outstanding post thanks. That McKinney has got to go he seems to be the weak link, hopefully someone else can step and play center.

Thx and it was an excellent read!

Thanks for the report.

I do have a question, though. You say that aside from center and guard, everyone looks pretty good, both offense and defense. I was just wondering how you evaluate them all as having a good day in comparison to one another. For example, if the WRs looked great, didn't they shame the secondary, which you also said pretty good?

I'm not challenging your report, don't get me wrong. I'm just curious. I've never been to a practice before.

I think that as individuals they can look good, because there are quite a lot of different drills, like 7 on 7's or 11 on 11's or just drills where they only play catch. Some with a pass rush, some without. And most of all there are a whole bunch of plays period.

I did not take what you said as a challenge, it was a good question.

Oh and this was an excellent report. Very good stuff..

:cool2: thanks a bunch... never late than better... thats what i asy

REGARDING SETH MCKINNEY- HOUCK NEEDS TO MOVE REX HADNOT TO CENTER AND THEN PLAY MCINTOSH AT RG. REMEMBER REX WAS DRAFTED AS A CENTER. THE PHINS LINE WOULD THEN BE FOLLOWING:
CAREY(LT) JAMES(LG) HADNOT(C) MCINTOSH(RG) MCDOUGAL(RT)

McKinney is the Problem

Thanks for the great post, Finfan.

I have been saying for YEARS that McKinney was the problem on the o-line. That guy is awful. Bottom line is whatever ability he has, he gets it from pure technique. He has no real strength or intuition. He gets beat on the simplest stunts and has no real power in his legs.

As a former QB I know, once you can push that center back, the pass rushing lanes for the 4 guys coming become huge. If McKinney could hold his ground it would really limit the edge guys. But by giving ground it makes the OT's fear the inside move which of course leaves them open to speed and bull rushes. It's a nightmare.

Get him out and trade big to acquire mediocrity, because what we have now is way beyond sub-par. Once McKinney is no longer a starter, this line is gonna come together in a hurry.
