Le Batard said on his radio show that Ireland put Alex Smith in a hotel room and promised him that a contract offer was coming. Smith wanted to go back to California to talk to his wife about things but Ireland insisted he stay because the offer was imminent. Ireland pulled the offer at the last minute while Smith was in California yesterday.

A lot of people have lied to Alex Smith, including his own team. Maybe he wouldn't be in this position if he had actually shown something his 1st 5 seasons in the league.

He actually kept telling him an offer was on the way...Alex told him "I don't want to make a decision in a South florida hotel room!" 24 hours later Ireland calls him and told him "we've decided to go elsewhere". This is the way Bill Parcells and all those goons operate...a bunch of mafia wanna-be hoodlums.

Alex needs to kiss and makeup with the 49'ers who disrespected him more than Ireland.

so is Ireland play Smith or is Smith playing Ireland? as if players and their agents dont play the game. players are bitter cus the market sucks. Everyone going to KC now....dream team!

Exactly what I expected.

See ya when our QB is Tannehill, Weeden, Cousins... or Matt Barkley. And when grd is sacking groceries where he belongs.

Another classic way of trying to kick someone when they're down...

How do we not know it was Smith lying to Ireland? Unless talking it over with his family means waiting on Peyton Manning, I would've asked him to stay as well

But if we signed him it would have been a great move right?

Slipshod business practices, bad reflection on the team and it reinforces a questionable reputation. No 2 ways about it. I could empathize with Smith.

However, when the smoke clears, passing on a guy with 1 good season who is not an appreciable upgrade over Moore yet you'd need to pay 4X as much is definitely a good move. Handled terribly, and a black eye: bad means to a good end!

IMO Alex wanted to use us to force the 49ers hand, but Ireland was using Smith as well.

Everyone uses everyone in this league for the ultimate bottom line: $$$.
