Lets put this all in perspective

Even Steve Young sucked when he played for a sucky team. Suck begets suck.

I am not saying Tannehill is Steve Young, but Tannehill's progress/success can not be measured in a vacuum; it must be measured against his surrounding.

I posted this in another thread but it seems relevant here.

Vaark has posted the image of the dropped passes from hosted.sports.com a few times. Today I went to check the site out. My position about Tannehill so far this season is that he has been inaccurate at times but the problems with his accuracy have been overstated. The above mention site has stats on poor throws in addition to the drops. I decided to compare Tannehill to the other young QBs that he is so often compared to.

Disclaimer: this is a limited data set and is not intended to make a prediction for the whole season. I am merely reporting the data so far.
Disclaimer 2: I don't know how the subjected decisions of poor throw are made. I am assuming that whatever the criteria, it is applied equally.

What stands out is that Tannehill is not the worst of the young QBs when it comes to poor throws and he is not much worse that any of the others (as I suspected). Foles, and Newton have a much higher % of bad throws.

A few other points of interest: Tannehill, Luck, and Foles have a higher percentage of passes defensed than the others. Tannehill has by far the highest number of passes hit at the line. Tannehill's drop percentage is by far the highest.

IMO, the numbers suggest that the struggles with the Dolphins offense should be shared. Poor throws are on the QB. Drops are on the receivers. Passes defensed are likely shared between the receivers (not getting open), QB (not throwing to best option), OC (suspect plays), and OL (not protecting long enough to go through progressions). Passes hit at the line are shared between the QB and the OL. One other thing, Tannehill is second in the league in attempts. Part of that is due to falling behind in all three games but it is still too many attempts. He should be closer to the middle of the league.

He was a large reason in the 2nd half of the year for us getting into playoff position and then the large reason for us missing it.

Just more par for the course with his inconsistent QB play.

Oh and btw QB's don't play each other. I roll my eyes every time I see a poster claim "Well he beat so and so QB".

Ryan Tannehill beat Matt Moore for the starting QB job. :D

Look...no question that Tannhill has had some accuracy issues....but make no mistake this is a team effort.....poor receiver play.....poor interior pass blocking....glaring holes at linebacker....poor coaching.....and yes....Tannehill has not been as good as I want him to be.

I know you want him to play better but his stat line with just 3 more catches I mentioned in my initial post would look pretty damn good all still leading league in drops which is crazy.

Im sure you'd be happy with 7-2 td (more likely 7-1)/int ration 60% comp and 730 plus yards while still having the most drops in the league no? I mean that would be pretty legit considering.

That would put him up there with Foles and he leads the league..

Look, like Bill Lazor said after the patriots game.. The ENTIRE passing game needs to get better and he's right. Several of those sacks you speak of are on Tannehill as he could have run but held on to the ball. The drops don't help and i'm not one who thinks that every pass needs to be perfect in order for WR's to catch it. I think Tannehill's accuracy is fine. I think his biggest problem is lack of pocket awareness and QB instinct. He does not know what to do when the protection breaks down. It seems to me that cuffs the ball and waits on the hit more often than not. I think that's a trait he got from the Sporano era, where they told him to focus on ball protection to reduce turnovers. Yea.. turnovers are bad but you can't play scared. Gotta turn him loose and let him make plays with his arm and his feet.

Tannehill didn't play for Sporano, or Sparano, or Soprano.
