A lot of the opinions I’ve seen on this game speak to the dominance of Miami’s offense over the Chargers, Griese’s huge game elevating him to starter about Fiedler, etc. Then, these numbers showed up from an e-mail discussion group.
Some numbers that may surprise you:
The Bolts led in time of posession (31:48-28:12), rushing yards (104-81) and first downs (18-14).
The Dolphins 264 net yards was their second lowest output of the year, the lowest being 234 against Jax, and tied their lowest first down total of 14 against Houston.
The Dolphins gained less yards than any team San Diego has faced this season with the exception of the Ravens.
The Chargers defense has allowed an average of 364 yards per game prior to last night; the Phins only managed 264 yards. Broken down that's 137 yards rushing per game (Phins got 81) and 226 yards passing per game (Phins got 183). And the Phins came close but didn't reach the Chargers average points given up per game of 28.
Another interesting individual stat is that Griese had a yards per attempt of 6.62, nearly identical to Fiedler's season average of 6.68.
Miami converted 50% of third downs (up from season average) and had 8 penalties for 47 yards.
Passing yards were also closer than I thought, 192 for Miami and 190 for the Chargers.
I’m not taking anything away from Griese here, I think he played well and brought a spark to the offense, but I admit the numbers here are not where I thought they were after the game… I still think he deserves to start next week and we’ll see what happens there, but this was not exactly the Miami Offense’s finest hour.
Take a look yourself, and see what you think…
