Looking Back on the Brandon Marshall Trade

Brandon Marshall team record in December thorough out his career

2006 Broncos start 7-3 but finish 2-3 in December
2007 Broncos finish 2-3 in December
2008 Broncos finish 1-3 in December
2009 Broncos finish 1-3 in December
2010 Dolphins finish 1-3 in December/Jan
2011 Dolphins finish 3-1 in December/Jan
2012 Bears finish 2-3 in December
2013 Bears finish 2-3 in December

Brandon Marshall's teams have gone 14-22 in December/Jan when the games count the most.

And that's all Marshall's fault?

2006: 14 catches 1 TD in December (out of 20 total on the year, so I don't even know how that year should even count either way.)

2007: 43 catches 3 TDs (both his highest for any month) in December

2008: 32 catches (his highest for any month) 2TDs in December

2009: 43 catches 4 TDs (both his highest for any month) in December

2010: 28 catches 2 TDs (both his highest for any month) in Dec/Jan (In week 15 and 16 alone he had 21 catches for 208 yards.)

2011: 22 catches 3 TDs (both his highest for any month) in Dec/Jan

2012: 37 catches (highest for any month) 3 TDs in December

2013: 26 catches 3 TDs in December

Say what you will about him in Miami, but he has been great in Chicago and was probably the best trade in years for Chicago. He's been a team leader and and off the field and a great player. They were 1 game removed from the playoffs last year (if Peppers sacks Rodgers on 4th down in the last game, they're in the playoffs) with an absolute putrid defense, while leading them to one of the absolute best offenses in the nfl last year with Mccown playing 5 games.

Every professional psychologist and psychiatrist will tell you that there is no cure for borderline personality disorder, medication does not appear to work. Marshall was unhappy in Miami and the multiple violent episodes off the field, including the multiple bashing of women and ultimately, his wife stabbing him with a vase to get him to stop whatever he was doing, suggested that he was almost out of control. He was a major risk to his wife, himself and the team.
People with this condition fixate on themselves and cannot be controlled. Josh McDaniels in Denver couldn't handle him. Tony Sparano in Miami couldn't handle him (and he harmed Henne's confidence along the way). But the close friendship with Jay Cutler is a big part of helping to control his behavior.
In hindsight, it appears that Ireland negotiated poorly. However, he was not to know that being around Cutler could so significantly ameliorate Brandon's behavior. Chicago took a very big risk (and it has paid off). The failure in the whole Marshall acquisition was getting him in the first place. Ireland seemed to have a predilection for acquiring players with significant mental health issues and then wondering why they implode.
Good luck to Chicago - they got a talented player and were able to give him the support and encouragement to succeed. We couldn't do that.

Because signing a contract extension on the View is totally sane, rational, whatever.

He did that to spread awaraness for mental diseases and donated 1 million dollars to charity for mental diseases. The Bears were 100% behind him on what he did, and so was almost everyone who saw it.

By the way, all you guys bashing Wallace are going to be changing your tunes quickly. I think he's going to have a huge year for you guys.

I am not a Wallace basher at all....I think his deep speed does wonders for an offense.

I also think it takes time for a QB and a receiver to get in sync...clearly Tannehill has had more time to get in sync with Hartline than Wallace and it shows.

With the improvements made to pass protect and O-line in general...along with a rookie receiver I think will have a huge impact...I expect a much better year out of Wallace and Tannehill as well.

IMO...there were legitimate reasons (including his own inexperience) in the teams play to give Tannehill the benefit of the doubt for any failings in his play in 2012 and 2013.....poor receving corp in 2012 (should have had Brandon Marshall)....and poor O-line play in 2013.

If both areas are now vastly improved...its time for Tannehill to take the next step and lead this team to the playoffs.

If he fails its time to again take a look at finding the right guy.

I stick by my assessment that we should have never traded for him in the first place...

He was a cancer in Denver and Miami. Perhaps he did grow up in Chicago (even though he had some outbursts there too), but to that point he was a negative on the team as a whole.

Which I'm not arguing, he's been great in Chicago though.

There is no rationalizing that trade. It was an unbelievably stupid decision. I don't care if Marshall was going to be spend half the season in a mental institution, two third round picks is not even close to enough compensation for that kind of talent.

Egnew might work out, too. I thought he looked good in his opportunities last year. I liked when he lined up at fullback. He should get a legit chance to make the team.

Yeah. He looked good for a 6th or 7th rounder, not a 3rd rounder. Egnew made a, couple good plays but is still garbage. His position needs to be upgraded

Thank you. Ireland is an idiot

Yaaaaaawn. This "argument" is old and warn out.

He has always been a top 5-10 WR every year he's been in the league.

Please inform us with your vast Dolphin knowledge like you usually do oh great keeper of the dirty Meadowlands.

yeah, Miami got the rear end of that deal. losing two 2nd round picks to denver, and then only getting two 3rd round picks from the bears. it's not like marshall sucked for us. he still got over 1k yards in both seasons with Miami. just not a lot of TD's. I think Miami could have at least gotten a 2nd and a 3rd.

Philbin pushed for the ouster of a back-to-back 1000 yard receiver. Our brilliant GM netted 2 3rd round picks. Those picks ended up being 3 picks after a trade down in 2012. Those players?

Michael Egnew
BJ Cunningham
Will Davis

Cunningham never even made the team. Egnew is awful, and who knows with Davis.

The trade also left us without any viable receivers in 2012, and forced us to blow 100 million on Wallace in 2013 - who btw ended up having similar personality and chemistry problems as Marshall.

Meanwhile Marshall has remained one of the top WRs in the league and just received a contract extension.

What an awful trade all around. And if anyone tries to absolve Philbin of this mess, shut it. He was just as culpable as Ireland.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Water over the dam, it's history. That GM is no longer here, Move on.

The whole thing is yet another wasted opportunity by the Dolphins organization. I swear this organization could eff up a one man rock fight.

Theres a reason Miami hasnt won a playoff game in over a decade. A premier talent like Marshall lands here, and they find a way to eff it up. Its inexcusable. Surely there was no QB, and Marshall demanded a ball that Henne and the offense could not deliver, but the fact remains he was dominant before Miami and is dominant again after.

Marshall is 2X the receiver alligator arms Wallace is. The sooner this organization can rid themselves of the contractual albatross that Wallace is, the better.

Thanks Ireland, and thanks Obama. Yes I blame both. For nearly everything.
