Lots of love for Marino from Rod Woodson

I agree with Rod. During Montana's SB years, I was sick of hearing how he was the Greatest QB. Like Rod said, it's a team sport, and teams win the SB. Montana was a very good QB on an all-around excellent team (both offense and defense). He didn't win any Super Bowls while in Kansas City, did he? In fact, I remember watching Marino beat Montana and KC in the playoffs. Dan pretty much single-handedly carried the Fins to the playoffs nearly every season, only to lose because his "team" was inferior to the other contenders.

Switch Marino and Montana and tell me who wins the most Super Bowls.

I agree completely, but we always get accused of being biased. This is a pointless debate with people because they either bring in their own personal bias or they measure this on different factors. Some put way too much weight on SB's, others look at just yardage, while others used TD's vs. interceptions. How do you measure today's QB's with ones from the past? Rules have made it much easier for QB's (protection/hits) and WR's (contact & interference) rules, to get open and score. I'm of the belief that if Dan in his prime were playing today, he'd be lighting up the scoreboard and record books way beyond what Brady and Manning are doing. But then again, I'm biased, as I said before.

You are biased, but you are also CORRECT!! I am biased as well, but I really dont give a damn!! LOL
IMO its much easier to "rise to the moment" and be great when you are surrounded by greatness!! Montana was very cool, but how cool would most QB's be if they had what he had surrounding him? Its similar to the Russell Wilson is so great now opinion, but look what he has around him. Dan had mostly nothing spectacular around him, and when he did have help it was always one sided, never a strong team throughout the lineup. NOOOOOOO running game EVER throughout his career, and an almost even worse defense throughout who couldnt stop anyone!! We could go on all day but we all know that Danny was without a doubt ONE of THE BEST EVER if not the best....

Hell, he should get in the HOF based on that comment alone.:d-day: Most intelligent analysis I have ever heard by those idiots that inhabit the airways.

I think Bill Walsh said something like this "Montana ran a great system; Marino was a system", or something like that. Great QB's don't need great systems, fantastic coaching or a ton of talent around them. They make everyone around them better. Today, that is Peyton Manning. Receivers come and go and he puts up the same numbers. He has different coaches, but keeps winning. The defense is great or sucks, and they are always fighting for a playoff spot. He doesn't need a special system or even an offensive co-ordinator, he runs the offense. This was Marino, but not necessarily Montana, Elway, Kelly or most other QB's of that generation. Many qb's get recognition because of their play in big games, but you have to be good enough to get to the big games first. Who is Russell Wilson without his team in the regular season? He never gets the chance to come up big in the playoffs. I am really curious of the case of Brady. He will go down as one of the greatest of all time, but is he a Montana/Wilson type or Marino/Manning type? He has several titles and has had interchanging receivers. Yet, he has had a hall of fame coach, an amazing scheme, good defense and in his best years, great receivers. When Brady retires, will Belichek look like a genius with another QB or will we see that Brady made Belichek?

He's already been in the HOF for over 3 years.....

Fair points, but you can't really call Marino the best if he didn't prove himself capable of winning Superbowl games. I agree it's not about who has the most SBs, but you have to be able to show you were capable of delivering on the biggest stage.

Peyton Manning's career and reputation have unquestionably been diminished by the fact that his regular season performances are not matched by his performances in the big knockout games. This year's SB loss illustrates that prodigious ability and record-breaking stats don't necessarily get it done. The only way to prove that they do is to win plenty of those big games.

It's a team sport and some of the Miami teams that Marino dragged to the postseason weren't at the level of the Broncos this year. But winning against adversity is what makes you great.

Harsh but fair, imo.

Swith Brady and Manning and tell me who do you think has three Super Bowl rings.

Disagree. SBs are a team accomplishment. Not really that difficult to separate individual play from the team. I look a player's impact on the game and how they were compared to their contemporaries and to the players that preceded them. Two great examples are Marino and Barry Sanders. Neither won the SB but both were considered to be among the all time greats during their careers based on their play alone. In their primes, no one said "Marino reminds me of....X" or "Sanders is like... Y". They were truly unique talents. Marino played today's NFL style 20 years before rule changes made it more common.

Is Tom Brady's legacy questioned as well? Brady has just as many Super Bowl losses as Manning.
Brady has yet to win a Super Bowl ever since he has passed for over 4,000 yards and thrown for 30+ TDs in a season.
Basically Brady hasn't won jack sh*t since he became the focal point of the offense.

So why‘s it fair to criticize Manning and Marino for their "Big Game" struggles?
The better team almost always wins in all eras of football and this perception of "choking" on the big stage is ridiculous.

I agree but part of the problem with the running game was Dan. Especially in his later years. He never even attempted a play fake or to sell the run. It was almost as bad a go…go go! Still the best to ever do it. Wish Shula had put better talent around him and controlled him a little better.

Ah I see...so Montana on the Bucs teams of 1976 (0-14) and 1977 (2-12) would've won Superbowls because, a great QB alone can conquer the adversity of a crappy team. Got it.
