Mando on the Struggling Run Defense

Everyone seems to forget this as a factor in the declining run D. Reshad Jones has been playing more man cov. this year instead of being able to free roam and play up in the box. Thats because our lb's suck in coverage. If you replace Dion J (Hopefully he learns how to block shed and fill gaps to stop the run) and replace misi on passing downs with Jenkins then jones can free roam and can help stop the run

I don't disagree with that, you definitely have to keep an eye on Geno Smith and his ability to run the ball and more than keep an eye on him . . . expect him to run it. That a way for them to open up the running game and you wanna close off all those windows.

I do think the most important matchup is our offense against your defense though. If the Jets can do similar things to what Buffalo did last week and if we haven't made adjustments . . . Geno is more than capable to put up enough points to take this game. Miami needs to score points, which means passing the ball, which means protecting Ryan Tannehill. It's the key matchup in this one.

If the key is protecting Tannehill we aere DOOMED!!! I rather see a creative ofensive game plan to counter the pressure, but I guess that is to much to ask from Sherman.

I think some folks get fooled b/c of the #s thinking Ryan has improved much more than he actually has. he HAS improved w/o a doubt and looks like he can be a good QB in the coming years but he's not there yet. if he was you'd be resting players this week or playing to win a division.

Dude seriously... Stop talking as if you watch all of our games. Reading your posts throughout the year, you clearly don't.

I've never seen linebackers get dragged down the field as much as I do with these two. Its crazy.

My problem with the linebackers is they fill up the stats sheet with tackles and assists made 5 to 7 yards down field. They do a terrible job filling the hole in run support.

Wheeler suks and should be traded or cut. Ellerbe is just ok. Maybe draft a solid MLB and move Ellerbe outside next year.

This defense is not Nolan's grind it out. It's designed like the Bengals' defense and it's supposed to make teams playing catch up pay through turn overs and bend but not break.

It's not a defense that will cause many three and outs, it's a defense that will get takeaways and hit the passer.

When our offense starts performing the synergy between the two will work out.

It's also a defense that will tire out, all the stunting our front four does wears them out, outside Sol, we are undersized and prone to get the ball ran up our guts.

It's not that the personnel is wrong, Jeff actually did a great job of assembling this defense in record time, the problem is it lacks the synergy it needs from the offense.

We changed from bump and run corners to zone, we changed reacting line backers to attacking line backers (which is the correct definition of what these guys do right) not blitzing, not coverage but guys that will dictate what the offense does with their cheer athleticism to show up anywhere on the field unexpectedly.

We changed from OLBs to DEs. IMO we just have to keep this defense competitive through this FA period and switch our LBs back to SOLB on the left and WOLB on the right.

Good post and what you say makes sense but from what i've seen Wheeler is not very good ... period.

I'm tired of hearing Dansby "had a big mouth"

not really, he just had a mouth/voice period. everyone who was all about that Philbin gum clean-up mentality was hating Dansby last season and hoping Philbin would cut him.

Sadly, the more i think about it, the more i am not even worried about SD and Balt, b/c the more i start to doubt we beat the jets.

This Run Defense is HORRIBLE, and last game against the Jets, we were lucky that Geno screwed up, bc the jets, had they kept running, were running it down our throats easily. If you want to convert a 3rd and long on the dolphins, run an off tackle play.

I doubt we even beat the jets at this point.

Our defense is solid and better than last year. The only reason our run defense is SO bad is because our offense can't sustain a drive or score points. We're constantly playing from behind (we've been outscored something like 67-43 in the 1st quarter of games this season) and we're constantly leaving our defense on the field because we can't run the ball or keep a drive going long enough to protect our defense.

Our defense is EXCELLENT against the pass... our defense gets sacks, CAUSES TURNOVERS, puts the offense in great field position... but our offense can't hold a drive together or put any points on the board. As a result, we are constantly playing from behind and teams are pounding the run because they can dictate the style of football when they have the lead.

This defense is built to protect a lead, it's built to hold it's own and to suffocate an opposing offense that is being kept honest because OUR offense is actually scoring. We're 8th in points against. I don't give a **** if we're the 32nd ranked run offense, if we are top 10 in points against, we are doing something right. Our defense has been doing that well in spite of our offense, which is ranked 24th in points for. That means our defense has been keeping us in games, even when the other team is able to run and pass against us, we are still doing good.

Now imagine if we made opposing offenses have to be one dimensional and pass-only. With our DL and our excellent pass defense, we're a stress free fan base. Too bad our offense is holding this team back.

Stop worrying about the run defense... start worrying about why Philbin, Sherman, and this offense are doing so damn bad every freaking year.

If only we knew how bad the new guys would be. I think Dansby, ellerbe, and Misi would've been a fine combo. I really believe Ellerbe isn't nearly as bad as f***ing Wheeler.

He's been pretty awful as well . . . for me personally, he's been more disappointing than even Wheeler as I expected more from him and less from Wheeler.

If you ask me, our best LB group would be Jordan - Misi - Jenkins
