Mando's open letter to Philbin

you're fooling yourself if you think that his very reputation as a coach isn't sullied. You got an entire list of free agents that are looking at miami and seeing a mess and a head coach that doesn't know how to handle his own locker room. He looks weak. He looks like the guy who cares more about picking up trash off the floor, jettisoning his team leaders and putting people like richie in charge all strip club team.

You don't fix perception by hiding your head in the sand.

I'm not the one fooling myself into thinking that a superficial and premature press conference about nothing changes anything you mentioned in your post.

ZSOUNDS: awsome post. and i agree with everything you said. BUT, the hate level against philbin and hickey is nothing short of a phenomenon so dont expect to many around here to get anything out of it.

fans around the boards are intoxicated with hate. i have NEVER seen anything like this, not with wanny, feidler, saban, ricky, cam cameron, parcells, sparano, etc.... . hickey and philbin deserve much better than the current miami fan base.
Hickey? Why are you mentioning Hickey? We all know he has nothing to do with this.

Probably the best and only good thing he ever wrote. Having been led by great motivators and being in leadership roles, motivatig soldiers to do what you know needs to be done during six deployments, my personal opinion from what I have seen of Philbin and the way he talks, there is no way in hell I woud give my best for this guy. He needs to be out front and answer the tough questions, examplify the leadership role he carries. Be the voice of the team, lead by example and his players will reward him with their performance on the field. Instead he sinks away and seems unapproachable. Those under him will not respect his decisions because of that. Basic leadership prinicples. Seen it times and again. To me, the way the team performed the last two games, with the playoffs o the line, is a direct reflection of Philbin's leadership skills, or more accurately the lack of that skill.

Thank you.

I want to hear how this team was completely unprepared to play the last two weeks of the season, with a playoff birth on the line !!! I want to hear how you lose to freaking Thad Lewis, twice?

Mando is right that Joe owes the public some type of statement and presser….

Here is where I fault Joe…

1. He did not have enough "foot soldiers" in the locker room. From trusted vets policing the place to young assistant coaches that have relationships with the players, Joe did not have enough of a connection to the locker room.
2. IF in fact Joe preached "respect one another" as the Wells Report states, obviously the players were not listening much to his words…hence Joe does not command much respect.

Do I blame Joe for the Martin Saga? No. He would have been aided by Martin actually telling him something. However, with that said, Joe did drop the ball some.

I actually didn't mean to thank this comment - I think you're off-base here.

I totally agree that Philbin needs to rehab and improve his image, but he needs to do it on his terms, in a setting he can "win" in. Holding a PC right now would be a clear "lose" with so many unresolved issues, and a media hungry for blood. I.e.:

  • There are still huge unresolved internal questions on the futures of Martin, Incog, Turner, Pouncey, etc. For certain Philbin will be asked all of those questions and a "no comment" response will again be seen as either clueless, evasive, or lacking leadership.
  • For Philbin to get out in front of the Dolphins and the NFL prior to them defining their own positions on the Wells report would be reckless at best, and infathomably dumb at worst.
  • Mando raised some questions in his letter, but those are only the tip of the iceberg in terms of ascertaining what Philbin knew or did not know. The media would be in feeding frenzy mode, and unless Philbin has a clear comprehensive storyboard that outlines what he knew, what he didn't and why, he runs a huge risk of looking like an even worse idiot on national TV. It would be Bambi in the headlights, and it would be UGLY.
Finally, people on this board (and Mando too) need to realize that just because we want to know, and we want to know now, doesn't mean that Philbin should cater to our timing and hold a presser. Anyone who deals with the media knows that if you want a successful outcome, you have to be in a position where you control the agenda, the message, the setting, and as a result you control them. If not, you run the risk of making the already bad much worse.

Joe Sandbagged to get Ireland gone

I'm sure you don't actually believe that!

Regarding Joe, I think the worst thing he can do is react to what a reporter wants or tries to bait him into. I'm sure both the Dolphins organization and Joe Philbin in particular will eventually speak to the media and make statements on their views and steps they are going to take. To be irritated that they aren't doing that based on your schedule is not reasonable.

Mando sounds like a little girl who got her Barbie taken away from her. He wants stories, he can't get any so he cries like a little baby. Not too surprising. It just confirms that Mando is one of the worst sports journalists this world has ever seen.

Here is one of the problems with that report. It is so slanted & biased as to be almost completely worthless.

The facts are good and they did a good job of gathering info but they 'spun' all the facts and grossly exaggerated everything to support their claim.

If Martin was really afraid to snitch on his teammates because he felt he was being bullied, and he felt that the oriental trainer was being bullied,

Why didn't he anonymously report the bullying of the trainer?

He was there and did nothing that makes him complicit in this Walk Disney, PC, fantasy Preschool world that they are using as a Model.

If he really is so sensitive then why do his texts refer to women in the exact same misogynistic and vulgar terms as the rest of the group?

You can't have it both ways. He lacks the strength to be himself and be different and he lacks the strength to fit in.

There have been a number of very intelligent NFL players that were marked individuals like Todd Christienson, Robert Smith, Gary fencik.

They all succeeded because they were tough and team players

It's not the oriental trainer, it's the Asian Asian trainer, you are going to be added to the Wells report mister.

From today's Miami Herald...Mando makes some valid points...Enjoy!!

An open letter to Dolphins coach Joe Philbin ...

Joe Philbin
Miami Dolphins head coach

Dear coach Philbin,
It's been a while since I've heard from you. Actually, it's been a while since Dolphins fans have seen you or heard from you. We last talked the day after the 2013 season abruptly ended without a playoff berth. You briefly attended new general manager Dennis Hickey's introductory press conference -- but only long enough to hear his and owner Stephen Ross's opening comments. You left as soon as the question and answer period began.

My Open Letter to Armando:

What makes you feel that Coach Philbin has any obligation to say anything to you, or discuss the Well's Report with you. Maybe because you consider yourself to occupy a lofty position as a NFL team beat writer, that coaches must automatically talk to you and answer your questions? If Philbin chooses not to talk to talk about Bullygate, than you need to move on. Some things are kept confidential and in-house. Perhaps J. Martin has psycchological issues and Philbin doesn't wish to discuss his mental health with you. You need to respect this. Time to move on Armando.

Outstanding post...thanks.

All the time? Is there a head coach in the league who speaks to the media less? We get our information through the media. So when Joe refuses to speak to the media, he's refusing to speak to the fans.

I can't believe you just wrote that! So Armando represents you? Omar represents you? Wow. And this in the age of twitter and al kinds of social media.
