Mark Duper tests positive for CTE

The NFL is no more going to get rid of helmets than NASCAR is going to put in a 400 cubic inch limit. And anyway I don't think it would do nearly as much to stop concussions as people seem to think it would. Watch a rugby match and tell me it's less violent for the brain. All you'd get is a field and sideline soaked with blood... in addition to concussions.

Football players are crazy people for the most part, but you really think the majority would still lead with their head wearing leather helmets? I think it would start out that way, but how many cracked skulls would they need to witness before they don't do it anymore? Maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

This is crazy. I have never saw him take any shots to the head. I am certainly hoping for the best for him. One of my favorite Dolphins of all time.

I can't tell you how disgusted it made me to see people call the players greedy in the CBA negotiations. To see people hold up the owners, who's investments are secure and who risk nothing in body or soul, as their champions. How hollow that is. How lacking in empathy. I suppose it's easier to think of the players as faceless meat bags throwing themselves at each other, but they're not. How about we as the audience who are entertained by their sacrifices at least support them in getting the biggest slice of our money?

It's the nature of the demographics on sports message boards, and among sports fans in general. They view rooting for the owners the same as opposing higher taxes on the rich. It's an instinctive howl. Life altering injuries don't mean anything to that group.

Indeed. You could have eliminated "altering injuries" and put "human" in front of "life" and it also would have been accurate.

All the years of recreational drug use probably had nothing to do with it.
I don't recall him taking that many vicious hits. I guess it is cumulative through out his football life.
I do hope that he is able to manage his condition and have some quality of life going forward.

lol you're obviously not in the medical field and it shows.

Makes you wonder when this all starts. You may not think young players hit eachother that hard, but I had a concussion from football in 3rd grade. I played 10 years, these guys probably have 14+ years before they even get to the pros, then they play another 5-10 years. Thats 20+ years of hits to the head. I love football, but I will try steering my son towards basketball.

It always pisses me off to hear defenders whining about the new rules, especially the old school guys "I wouldn't even know how to play in todays NFL" they say as they invariably show a clip of some guy getting absolutely crushed on a semi-legal hit. Most of these bone crushing hits are avoidable, they always have been and they are designed to intimidate as much as to make a good tackle. The way I see it is if you wouldn't do it to your kid or a friend in a game of pick-up in your backyard then you shouldn't do it on the football field.

As for helmets, their original intent was supposed to be a safety feature of last resort, more like a seat-belt, than what they've evolved into which is more of a shield or even a weapon in some instances. Its going to be an interesting problem for the league to fix and I think technology will play a key role, and a lot more players will start getting a lot more rest. For now I think they definitely should start using those senors that measure g-force in the NFL with mandatory rest period if they exceed a certain threshold, and try to go with more of a soft shell helmet.

I just worked recently with a neurologist recently and we both happened to watch league of denial the night prior to working with one another and we struck up a conversation about head trauma in sports. he stressed the importance of proper recourse after even a mild to moderate concussion; to the point of having the patient confined in completely unstimulating environments. after suffering a concussion and not allowing your brain to heal, any contact after that to the head is a roll of the dice really.

I don't feel guilty for watching it, but I sure as hell am not going to let my kids play. If they show any signs of great athletic ability, I'd definitely guide them towards baseball or some other sport where you could also make a mint without significantly reducing the quality and duration of your life.
