Martin's high school coach

Yikes, not good when your own high school coach basically calls you weak and soft.

If you think you are being bullied to the point of a mental breakdown you tell someone, you seek help. Martin failed to do this.

He didn't call him weak and soft. He basically said he's a good person that is respectful and kept to himself.

But I do find it hard to believe that absolutely no one in this world other than Martin knew this was occurring.

It happens. It absolutely happens. People with a certain personality, who internalize things, can let it happen that way. I know this for a fact. I've lived it when I was younger.

Martin had enough talent to start at left tackle in the NFL. If this guy did not have what it takes to do that - mentally or physically - it stands to figure that someone would have figured that out long before he was drafted in the 2nd round with the potential to make millions. Soft personality whatever the hell that means maybe, but he showed ALL his coaches something much more on the field. Otherwise he's in the real world with the rest of us.

It's not always as easy as some may think to seek help. Personally speaking, I know how hard it is to ask for help.

Also, his coach isn't calling him weak or soft. Just a respectful, introverted person.

Too many "take away's" from people reading articles and social media. It's impossible to know what the coach means without being there and hearing this in person. These opinions formulated without proof are dangerous.....

You know, I've seen this touched on briefly in a couple of posts, and I hate to pile on Ireland and management ... OK, not really ... but part of putting a team together is getting parts that fit together. When you are doing all the predraft interviews and research, didn't anyone see where a Type B personality like Martin apparently is might not fit with Incognito or some of the other Type A's on this team, especially when you are investing a second round pick in the guy who is supposed to be your left tackle down the road? If they didn't consider that then, I think they will in the future (should they get the chance).

AKA in the football world as soft.

Tell that to Barry Sanders. God some people are stupid. I'm all for saying that we don't need Martin because he was not a good player. But lets not say he was 'soft' because he was respectful and kept to himself. One does not equate to the other. If Jonathan Martin was the second coming of Jonathan Ogden, every single person on this board bashing him would be full on board behind him. Lets differentiate between the player and the person. What Incognito did and has done has shown him to be a god-awful human being. Its unfortunate he's a good football player, or he'd be on some construction crew and no one would know him. Jonathan Martin seems to be a quiet, maybe not so strong-willed person, who has a ways to go to be a good football player.

As to why he didn't go to Philbin or Ireland or Sherman or the OLine coach......not saying he shouldn't have at least once....but....Philbin brings players to the front of rooms to make fun of their haircuts and tells guys to tie their shoes, the oline coach calls out his players for being fat slobs, and Ireland might ask him if he has an Oedipal complex. The coaching staff/front office needs to create an atmosphere where its players are comfortable. The players shouldn't have to fight for it. Lombardi made it clear to his players not only that racism wasn't acceptable, but that homophobia would not be allowed either. The coaching staff needs to make ALL of its players feel they can be themselves when they come to work.

The coaching staff and front office can come back from this in my mind, but they have to take things by the horns. Make some declarations. "Martin is welcome back when he is emotionally ready". "Bullying and hazing is expressly forbidden by the Miami Dolphins"....Cut Incognito...pay the penalty. He's not likely to ever play in the NFL again anyway. If Martin bites the big one, cut him in the offseason and cite poor play. While your at it, fire Sherman for being a DB and a pizz poor OC.

Lets be honest, we want to be as successful as the Patriots. Part of the reason the Pats are so successful for a decade now, is the culture of the team. We may not like it, but Kraft is a better owner, Belichick is a better coach, and they create a no-nonsense atmosphere around the team. Seems like it's been a little bit of high school with this team.

Where does Martin's coach insinuate in the article that he is weak and soft? My takeaway from reading it is that he is a good guy and tries to do the right thing.

I would agree. Coach Vic Eumont was a coach at my high school in New Orleans in the 70's (yeah I'm an old fart). Coach Vic was not only a great coach, but a great builder of character in young men, using sports as a means to that end. It sounds like Martin was raised right. I hope the young man can get past this bump in the road.

Just because I do not agree with you this doesn't make you smart.

IMO Martin is weak, I think the evidence is over whelming. Yes, you don't have to agree with me. Save the name calling, thx.

I reiterate, by your logic, Barry Sanders was weak.

Again, I don't agree, yet I don't think you are stupid!

Sanders was a monster, never showed any weakness on the field. When you combine a short coming on the field which Martin showed, it's very easy to connect his off the field attitude to his performance on the field.

I apologize if it seemed I was attacking you personally, I wasn't. But I think my point is that not all great players are strong, and not all bad players are weak. I don't think there is anything weak in any way shape or form about Tim Tebow. But he's an awful quarterback. I just think its short-sighted to make a connection between a persons strength of character and his performance on the field.
