Matt Roth Info from a Hawkeye

I was sold on him after I read the article about him ripping Gallery's facemask off in the middle of a scuffle in a game. That is impressive, there are a couple players I wouldn't mind him tearing the facemask off of next year. Watch out Brady here comes Roth!!!

TRACE Armstrong? C'mon Pete -- Trace Armstrong would've had to get on drugs to be like this guy.
 
Great first post. Roth is the type who won't tolerate the fourth quarter defensive lapses. I just wish there had been some way to lasso both Roth and Khalif Barnes, who also slipped but was nabbed by Jax at #52. You're not the only one with questions about Crowder. I remember that Outback Bowl farce. Not only was he mouthing off while being routed, Iowa was doing the bulk of the damage running straight at Florida. Then Crowder would stop a play for a mere 5 yard gain and act like he'd just stopped the game winning TD plunge al la the Alabama kid in the Sugar Bowl vs. Penn St. That last one dates me, I realize. Late '70s. Barry Krauss.

Great first post bro. I am pumped about Roth being a Phin. I didn't know anything about him until we drafted him but I've been doing my homework on the guy and he looks awesome! If Brady thought we gave him fits with Taylor I can't wait to see what life is like for Brady adding Roth into the equation! I also like how he does that "clapping of the hands" after he makes a big play. That will also go well with Taylors sig... I can't wait!!! :D

I'd post some more Roth links, but I'll have to post 98 more times before I meet the "100 post URL criteria"! Is that rule to to deter spammers?

A few more fun Roth tidbits:

1. Keep track of your food. Roth had a reputation in the Iowa dorms of helping himself to other people's food. One guy walked into his dorm room to find Roth eating a sandwich out of his dorm fridge. The guy said to Roth, "What the f**k are you doing?!?", to which Roth replied, "eating lunch, what the f**k are you doing?!?".

2. Roth cleared out an entire bar in Iowa City. Roth went in with a cut-off sleeve shirt, and the bouncers told him to leave and get an appropriate shirt. One thing led to another and Roth challenged every bouncer and the bar patrons spilled out onto the street to watch. No punches were thrown, but it prompted Coach Ferentz to change team rules about where his players could hang out.

3. The story of Roth ripping the facemask off of Robert Gallery is true. Roth is a big guy, but I guess it was pretty funny watching 6-7/325 Gallery stare down Roth with no face mask. According to both Roth and Gallery, they are very good friends to this day.

He is a different cat, but a guy you want on your side. The Iowa coaches would comment as such, and simply say "Roth is Roth".

Also, Roth is NOT the stereotypical "non-athletic overachiever". Quite the opposite. He was a very highly regarded LB out of HS. He had 161 tackles as a Senior at a big Chicago suburban school, was 31-0 as a wrestler his senior year, and was named 1st Team All-State, All-American, and Illinois High School Athlete of the year. The guy is a natural athlete, and combined with a very nasty streak and a severe hatred of losing, he will IMHO be a Pro Bowl DE some day.

My biggest fear is that gets a few penalties for taking the head off of QBs after the ball is released. He pushed that fine-line in college at times, and will have to be smart in the NFL, where the refs pay close attention to the QBs safety.

....WOW I saw this guy in college vs. OSU..but i never knew he was THAT intense!!!! I for one couldnt be happier he's a Fin.....welcome aboard fellow Big Ten Rival..atleast we agree on one thing!!! GO FINS!!
