Matt Roth Info from a Hawkeye

Does anyone else fear that this guy might be on steroids? I hope he is naturally nuts but it sounds to me like his personality traits are similar to roid users

They are tested constantly in college and NFL. He's never tested positive........like Luis Castillo (Chargers #28 pick) did at the NFL combine.

I am not concerned at all.......... :cooldude:

Great 1st post. Awesome video of him as well. I'm glad to see that we are happy about that pick. I was extremely happy as I have been keeping up with the draft and did some research on him. He is a monster and I can't wait to see what Qb's do with him and Taylor coming off the edge along with Carter down the middle.

I say we all chant "Maximus, Maximus" every time he makes a sack. That would be awesome.

Pretty silly even throwing that out, IMO... But, unsubstantiated rumors have to start somewhere, right?

According to his mother he has been a wild man since he was a little kid. He is simply a VERY intense dude.

Iowa randomly tests and monitors for banned substances. The Iowa Strength coach, Chris Doyle, is one of the very best. Roth is simply a product of a football PLAYERS mentality, along with excellent training and nutrition.

It is not by accident that Iowa has had so many players drafted and make NFL rosters the last 3 years. Along with being one of only 4 college programs to finish in the Top-10 each of the last 3 years (the others are USC, Oklahoma, and Georgia), Kirk Ferentz and staff have gained a strong rep in the NFL of putting out NFL ready players. In particular, Doyle's S&C program has made Robery Gallery into a 6-7/325 guy who ran a 4.92 40.... Dallas Clark, a walk-on like Gallery, tested off the charts at the NFL combine before going to the Colts in the first round 2 years ago. He was a 265lb. TE who ran a 4.55 30 and had the fasted 3-cone times of anyone tested, including WRs, CBs, and RBs. Iowa has something special going on, and it is NOT steroids... his name is Chris Doyle.

Great first post bro. I am pumped about Roth being a Phin. I didn't know anything about him until we drafted him but I've been doing my homework on the guy and he looks awesome! If Brady thought we gave him fits with Taylor I can't wait to see what life is like for Brady adding Roth into the equation! I also like how he does that "clapping of the hands" after he makes a big play. That will also go well with Taylors sig... I can't wait!!! :D

He did the "clapping of the hands" as you put it, because of the Gators....it's not his sack celebration.

The only thing I fear is his intensity might hurt us with penalties. Like Brian Cox sometimes his emotions got the best of him. I have read he is an intelligent guy so we will have to see.

You are correct, Roth might get a few penalties, especially at first. Coach Ferentz has very little tolerance for stupid mistakes, but it was interesting how they tolerated a few penalties from Roth. They concluded long ago that he isn't a dirty player at all, just a guy who has a hard time stopping his motor sometimes.... and they wanted him to stay just like that.

The thing that some won't realize until camp starts is how much Roth will change the attitude of the defense, especially in practice... Certain guys just simply raise the level of intensity of everyone around them.

Inetrestingly, Iowa had a very similar player last year in Bob Sanders. We told the Colts fans how Bob would change the attitude of their D, but it wasn't until camp started did they see it... Now it is all the Colts fans and media talk about ... he has become a starter and favorite already...

We call it Iowa football... and it's why we have a decent shot at playing in Pasadena this year for all the marbles...

That would be amazing, if everytime he made a play, you heard the stadium exploding "MAXIMUS!!!!" He would be come a legend, even before his 1st year was even over.

Greetings fellow Dolphin Fans. I've watched Matt Roth play every down of every game in his career at Iowa, watched over 10 Iowa practices, and have met him on 2 ocassions. I'm originally from Iowa, played D3 college ball, and went to The Univ. of Iowa for grad school. I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I've played enough to know a phenomenal player when I see one.

We got an utter steal with Roth at #46. He is very well coached, very technically sound, and is an absolute animal on the field, practice and game. Matt was the only unamimous 1st Team All-B10 defensive pick by the opposing B10 COACHES... that says a lot. Saban and his staff would have studied a LOT of film on Roth just a few months ago before Iowa played LSU in the Capital One Bowl, so I'm now even more confident in Saban's abilities.

In practice, the Iowa coaches have had to sit him down or ask him to back off, for fear of him hurting our offensive players. He was a champion wrestler (as many of Iowa's players were), and it shows with excellent leverage, use of his hands, and work-ethic.

VERY athletic, ran an electronic 4.74 at the NFL Combine. NFL scouts put a lot of emphasis on hand-size, and only 3 other players at the Senior Bowl had bigger hands than Roth (10.25 inches). He was touted as the most dominant defensive player at the Senior Bowl, and many of the NFL coaches there commented on his excellent technique and abilities.

He IS a bit of a wild-man... has been known to party some. He is a great young man, so I hope the South Florida scene doesn't call him to much!

With our crowded DL, it will be tough, but I would NOT be surprised to see him start sometime during his rookie season... He is that good, and will strike fear in opposing coaches and players. He only started 1 game his Sophomore year and still registered 10 sacks in 11 games!

He was a LB in H.S. and his first year at Iowa.... He can play ILB, but he is most effective with a hand on the ground and rushing QBs. His hand-work and sheer strength make him much better against the run than some scouting reports indicated... he is very good against the run.

The following is a great Matt Roth Video:

You will love it! Sorry, I can't post the link as I don't have 100 posts?!? Maybe someone can post the link?

Sorry for the long diatribe... I am simply stoked about Roth in Miami... I'd be happy to try and answer any other questions anyone might have about him...

p.s. Ronnie Brown was an awesome pick... an amazing RB with excellent character.... I'm not sold yet on Crowder's character, but his talent is undeniable. I watched Crowder play in person when Iowa played Florida in the 2004 Outback Bowl... He was mouthing off the whole game, and was even talking trash when Florida was down 37-10 in the 4th quarter?!?!... I think Saban will straighten that part out... he is way too good to have to be talking so much... Just my humble opinion... no offense meant to UF fans on here.
Good write up. It is great to see other Hawk fans on the site. I have lived all my life in Iowa CIty and too have watched Roth play in every game. He is a great player that will never take a play off. But like everything in life there is one draw back to him, he is good for about 2 off sides a game. That being said it is the only thing I have seen that is a negitive about this kid. The only reason he is off sides is because he can't wait to kill the ball carrier. He is alot of fun to watch and will be a great pro. Go Hawks

:welcome:

I'm really excited about this pick too.

I hope we use him as an OLB like McGinest or a Vrabel.

I'm just looking at how he had 10 sacks in 11 games despite only starting 1 game the entire year, his sophomore season, and I think those Trace Armstrong comparisons are pretty spot-on.

Remember, he's a role player for now. I think Saban saw what he could do as a role player his sophomore year and decided he wanted that on this team. I can't blame him. I'm not sure if he projects as a 4-down starter in the NFL though. He'll have to prove that he can maintain that high level of energy with the effectiveness at the NFL level for a full 4 quarters. It isn't easy...many great college players lose effectiveness being asked to play the entire 4 quarters of NFL games starting all 4 downs at DE.

Personally I could do without the penalties, but I must admit I always loved Cox's intensity, and now I hope to see the same with Roth, with a little more intelligence, and self control..... I hope
