I decided to watch Carey every play on offense and Roth on defense. What shocks me about Roth is how tiny he looks. I don't care about the height/weight technicalities. His frame is very small compared to the guys he is being asked to defeat. I remember he wore #31 in college so obviously he must have started out at LB or DB at Iowa. He just looks much smaller than I projected.
Roth takes a straight ahead charge almost every time. The clever wiggles or variety of rush moves just aren't there. He ends up in a lockarmed stalemate with the offensive lineman one play after another. We'll need to scheme to set him free after the QB with a jump start edge. The effort is tremendous and I'm sure it will increase when the opener arrives. Roth is a gamer especially when you watch the lame turn-your-back-to-the-line-of-scrimmage nonsense from Manny Wright.
