Matt Roth

I'm a little puzzled by the "Roth looks slow" thing. He's a defensive end, not a conerback. Rarely do you see DEs running in the open field. When he has done that, like last night when he tracked down that back, he showed pretty good speed. At the combine, he ran a 4.77 40 at 277 lbs. That's not bad.

If you're judging his "speed" by his upfield movement on pass rushes, that's not speed. There's a 325 guys in front of him trying to slow him down.

Glad you posted that .. saved me a lot of typing .. I was thinking the exact thing.

To me, he seems like a chicken with his head cut off, he is doing a lot of running around, but does not seem to know where he is going! He just needs to learn more!

Didn't he even run the wrong direction after he intercepted the ball, I believe it was, the last game?

It may have seemed that way with how slow he was moving...but no, it was generally the right direction.

(I didn't mean roth is slow...i just meant he moved slow after he picked off the pass.)

I dont understand this Matt Rothe critisism. I dod not think he was slow, especialily after he chased down a RB. He is going to be good, he might have been our best defensive player last night. I dont know what tv you guys are watching.

I think people are expecting him to be as fast as Jason Taylor.

In due time....

If we go by what we see in the preseason, we would have shipped Marino out in favor of Scott MitcheL. Surtain didn't look solid in his rookie season. JT wasn't blowing people away right out the gate. You look for traits that will develop & mature in a player. Give Roth some time. He's got to adjust to a new team, system and life in the NFL. He's got the 2 most important things he could have, raw talent & work ethic. The lightbulb will go on, just not as soon as you flick the switch.

We could talk about all the players in history that werent this or that.. but is the guy a baller? can the guy play ball!

that is what we are going to find out

Who knows. I do think that if Babineaux continues to look good, then there is a good possibility that Roth looked good in college because of Babineaux. In my experience I have found that a good pocket-collapsing passrushing defensive tackle can create lots of sack opportunities for a mediocre defensive end with a high motor.

That is only a possibility, however. Roth has shown enough to see that he can probably become a very good player. No reason to worry, then again you could also wish he showed us some freak-nasty moves that made offensive tackles hang their heads in shame...IMO that's what Dan Cody does...but that boy went and got himself injured for the season so it's hard to say we should have drafted Cody over Roth...

Matt Roth was projected by many analysts to be a first round pick.
He had a great college career.
He has a huge motor and hes tough.
The only reason he fell to the 2nd round was because of his lack of elite speed. And thats probably it.
If he was a bit quicker, he would have been a first round pick.
He was taken with an early 2nd round pick.
No doubt if we didnt get him in the 2nd, someone else would have with their 2nd rounder.
In a couple of years when he's developed more strength and experience, he will be huge against the run and he isnt a slug he'll get his share of sacks.
