Matt Roth

Neither of you have probably ever envn played football to know what it really takes to play the game

Everyone knows Saban wanted Webster with that pick. He went with Roth because that was the safe option. You take what you get with a guy like that. He may never be a superstar but hes going to play hard and will probably have a long career in the nfl.

You cant do a straight up conparison of Roth to Surtain and their relative values. Surtain was traded below his value because of contract concerns. Whether these fans know it or not, this season is a wash....this team probably isnt going to win for the next two years and Saban knows it. You take what you can get for your aging vets and rebuild. The signing of Carter was more of a shock to me than the trading of Surtain.

Since when was it deemed that Jason Taylor was sure Hall of Famer. At this in his career I would say hes not.

Roth deserves scrutiny because a primary focus of our offseason was peddling Surtain for the elusive #2 to "make up" for the disastrous Feeley trade. We ended up with Matt Roth. In the last twelve months we shipped two of our premier defenders in Ogunleye and Surtain. The haul: Marty Booker, Lamar Gordon and Matt Roth. My hands shake in uncontrollable disbelief and disgust when I type that.

The Surtain trade was NOT to get a 2nd round pick, it was to shed a GIGANTIC contract that was really hurting our cap.

The Ogunleye & Gordon trade were done by Wanny & Co, so you can't hold it against Saban. IMO Ogunleye had 1 good season & didn't yet deserve to jocky for top 10 pay. Gordon was a need trade. We were desperate....

yeah, i dunno if JT is a "sure Hall of Famer" quite yet... certainly not right away on the ballot...

read your own sig why are you even disagreein

I am not, if you reread what I posted it was obviously sarcasm. I think Roth has looked good. I don't see this "slowness". It is not like he is running the 40 out there.

He just has two things against him. He can't bully NFL tackles like he did in college and he still has college strength. Once he gets NFL strength and some techniques he will be a good pass rushing defensive end.

In the last 5 years only one player has more sacks than him. If he keeps it up for 3 more years there is a decent chance for the hall of fame.

People suggesting Roth is a bust at this point are dumb beyond pretty much any hope.

Some Defensive ends dont come out of the box ready to be starters. Technique needs to be learned for the NFL. Jason Taylor himself(A 2nd rounder too, I believe) was a one-dimensional upfield rusher and a poor run defender for his first several years in the league until he learned proper technique.

Just give Roth some time, he was drafted for his motor and you cant teach that. The strength will come with time as will the technique.(at least if hes smart)

I'm a little puzzled by the "Roth looks slow" thing. He's a defensive end, not a conerback. Rarely do you see DEs running in the open field. When he has done that, like last night when he tracked down that back, he showed pretty good speed. At the combine, he ran a 4.77 40 at 277 lbs. That's not bad.

If you're judging his "speed" by his upfield movement on pass rushes, that's not speed. There's a 325 guys in front of him trying to slow him down.

Taylor was a third rounder. And you are right, he wasn't the player we know now until he was well into his second season. He played behind Armstrong and Rich Owens as a rookie, and was dominated by the top left tackles early in his career.
