Mccoy= vanilla offense....

dtanThe ultimate danger is hiring a cupcake coach who thinks he can use empty sets and throw 40+ times per game with a mediocre or worse quarterback. And those types are increasingly available, in an era that somehow tags Mike Leach a genius.

If we stumble upon a freak quarterback, don't worry, we'll wing it. Under these rules and application of them, you'd be shown the door within days if you didn't abuse the pass with that type of weapon.

As a gambler I'm partial to upside. McCoy has it. I thought some of his schemes were brilliant, particularly against Pittsburgh when Polamalu was all but fooled and nullified on several vital plays. Polamalu has made a career out of overplaying short crossing routes, blowing them up and causing turnovers. McCoy used combination routes he hadn't shown all year to get Polamalu to bite and overreact, leaving him stuck tight to the line of scrimmage while Thomas burned Taylor downfield.

He doesn't abuse screen passes, which is another trait I love. Fans salivate over screen passes but if you chart plays you'll quickly detect how worthless they are, particularly on third down.

Like everything else, a great quarterback can make screen passes work. The rest of the league calls them far too often. Top defenses don't allow catch and run for vital first downs. McCoy's receivers are beyond the marker.

And he apparently understands that a heavy dose of runs is preferable to flimsy short passes. I'd love to sign up for 480 rushes right now.

If McCoy gets the job, the early press conferences should be very telling. Saban immediately impressed as a jerk who was offended that the media was allowed in the same room. Cameron was a puddle. Sparano was a comparative relief as a solid normal guy but it was quickly evident he was anything but brilliant, hardly ideal when asked to tackle Brady/Belichick twice per year.

Sigh. My long held opinion is the franchise is wading through the midsection of a 50 year period when not much can go right as long as well call that sterile stadium our home. It is a glorified neutral site, by every definition or evaluation. The fact that we insist in dumping additional mega millions into it instead of leveling it shouts to the overmatched ignorance of everyone involved at highest level.

So while I doubt that Ross, as a Sun Lifer -- not unlike Beta III inhabitants, of the body of Landru -- can snap out of it long enough to identify an enlightened coach or general manager, McCoy offers more hope than most, although distant historians will note McCoy was once of the body himself, friend.

Zolpidem kicking in.

That same cupcake coach understands that mediocre bums like Matt Moore won't do. Mike McCoy? Count on the same run first, abandoning the QB position, mediocre results we've come to expect from this franchise.

Posts like these get me lol

People want flashy and style points but yet the 49ers, Ravens, and Giants are all built around "vanilla" type of offenses. Yes the Giants threw a lot this year, but Coughlin's bread and butter is the run game and they are running in the playoffs.

You shouldn't rank your candidates on whether they are going to be fun to watch. You should rank them on whether they are going to win or not. I'm not a huge Mccoy fan, but it seems like a lot of respected NFL guys think he's going to be a great coach.

Coughlin has a QB that can get it done when he needs to. We don't.

The 49ers didn't think they had a QB who could get it done before this year. There are still Raven fans that don't believe in Flacco.

All this talk about the game becoming a Quarterbacks league and yet 3 of the four teams left still believe in running the football and playing defense. Defenses and running the football win championships.

I want a QB upgrade also, but no one should be blind to the fact that exciting football doesn't exactly mean postseason success.

For the 4 millionth time...he is NOT an Option-based coach. He is actually an attacking type of guy, but as previous people have said, what makes him attractive is he has been shown to adapt his offense to the times and personnel on the team.

The last 8 Superbowl winners had Franchise QB's. 17 of the last 20 had franchise QB's. 27 straight Superbowls were won by QB's with a pro bowl on their resume. Starting to see a trend here?

Yet all three of those guys are better than anyone on our roster.

Another point is McCoy has to run an entire football team, not just the offense. So while I am sure he will have a big say in how the offense runs, it also depends on who he brings in for an offensive coordinator.

I'm getting just as irritated. Do any of you that are bashing the guys offensive scheme this season even realize what this guy did?? It was freaking genius. He isn't even my preference and I see that you can't be too stupid to pull off what he did with Tebow as his QB. They had a freaking running back as their QB......and made it to the playoffs. I'm not a believer in Moore, but Tebow couldn't clean his cleats at the position.......but they won!!! They beat us?! Imagine what he could do with a real QB.

After the Dolphins have said for the past couple of years they wanted a high powered offense, now comes the word about Mccoy being our new HC. His track record in Carolina and Denver was that of a running first style offense. The dream of us getting an offense like the Pats, Saints, Packers are out of the question if this guy becomes our HC. Id prefer Philibin because he atleast comes from a system that is considered the best in the NFL....
Forget about the fact we have stunk for so long, what really has let me down more than anything is we are BORING.....

This was the worst season to watch by far in the Dolphins history, just because we knew it was all about Field Goals and Fist Pumps.... Now it looks like we are getting another head coach who thrives on kicking Field Goals too...... At this point our Goal Post will be in the Hall of Fame soon

Saints = HOF QB. Packers = HOF QB. NE = HOF QB.

See the pattern here Chet? You act like it's the easiest thing in the world to be all-world offensive coach of the year. These "high-powered" offenses are what they are b/c of their personnel. McCoy's personnel in Carolina and Denver wasn't anything close to being adequate.

Forgot the Colts and Steelers.

People give entirely too much credit to OCs and DCs. Their schemes they run are based on the personnel they have. The Dolphins can't run the offense the Saints or Patriots have b/c they don't have the equal amount of talent as they do.

I never thought this concept was difficult to grasp.

I guess you missed the entire Broncos season or the playoff win over the STEELERS.

Worst season so far?

Did you even watch the opening game against the Pats?

The defense lost that game. How many TD's and yards did we have again?

If you are bored by these dolphins, the undeafeted fins would have put your short attention span into a coma.

That's because that's exactly what he is..a young Dan henning. The dolphins organization is getting out of hand. Why hire a hit with absolutely no credentials of being a hc. We should have taken more time if this was the case. I feel like we just rushed this because they were so sure fisher would sign then he snubbed them. Ross is a joke I'm not counting out mike mccoy before he has done anythong but as of right now it really looks like this team is headed in the absolute wrong direction. I feel like I'm a fan of the Cleveland browns right now

You do know they beat us last year, right?
